Who Coloured In The Food?

I have missed pottering about in the kitchen this week and was looking forward to being in there today.  I am irritated about no heating or hot water especially since my kitchen, with 3 outside walls, is the coldest room in the house.  So we put on lots of layers and enjoyed being together anyway.

I had a proud Mummy moment.  Harvey made himself some porridge for breakfast and asked what fruit was available for him to add to it.  And then he added some nuts so I was thrilled he is instinctively making healthy food choices :-).  So proud.  He did also add some chocolate which is not so healthy but I liked his creativity in the kitchen.  His breakfast of porridge with a grated apple, handful of macadamias and 3 squares of Mayan Gold tasted very good.

I went for a very healthy option.

40 g quinoa (80 g when cooked), with a papaya, 1 tsp sunflower seeds and 1 tsp golden linseeds.  I ground the seeds in a coffee grinder so they were like a powder which makes them easier to digest.

I am a recent papaya convert and I wouldn’t eat it on its own as I slightly dislike the texture but mixed up with quinoa it was lovely.  It had a clean and fresh flavour and was perfectly ripe.

I bought something new this week in the market.  I think they were called ‘French Truffle Potatoes’.   They were black on the outside

and purple inside.

They tasted earthier than white new potatoes which Harvey didn’t like but I did and I really liked the contrast on the plate.

I had the potatoes with ham and salad:

150 g new potatoes
10 g butter
2 tbsp Salad Cream
65 g ham
lettuce, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas

I enjoyed that.

Then I prepared supper.  I had a gammon ham which I cooked in the slow cooker.  I have found a great site for those of us with a slow cooker (or crock pot as they call them in the USA) Crockpot 365.  Stephanie, the blog writer, has published 2 books about slow cooking and written this great blog with a different recipe for every day.  I followed Stephanie’s recipe exactly for

Honey Glazed Ham

Ingredients  (serves 4 – 5)

  • Gammon
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon gluten free Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
Method
  • Place the gammon (you may need to pre soak in water – check with your butcher or read the label) in the slow cooker.
  • Place the other ingredients in a sauce pan and heat gently until the honey and butter has melted.
  • Pour over the gammon.
  • Put the lid on and cook on low for 6 hours.
  • No need to baste.

While supper was cooking we went for a walk in the forest.  The rainy morning changed in to a sunny afternoon and it was lovely outside.

I walked, Harvey cycled and the dogs ran.

The local forest is criss-crossed with numerous tracks.  We usually follow the same route but today Harvey decided we should do something else so he chose which tracks we went up or down.  Some were more challenging than others!

It was so good to be out in the lovely countryside.  Much as I have enjoyed being in London this week, I have missed being outside in the fresh air.

Someone was a little bit cheeky about how much time he had to spend waiting for me to catch up!  Our new routes added to the walk considerably and we spent one and a half hours walking/cycling/running through the forest which was lovely.

This one is especially for Elaine, in case she is missing the lovely Kent scenery, either in reality or in my blog 🙂 .

Back at home I had a lovely surprise.  I received a lovely basket with a beautiful plant in it.  Thank you Marie 🙂

Who made the mushrooms pink

and yellow?

They look like coral!

After the walk I was really hungry so I had a bowl of cereal with yogurt.  Then I just zonked out and fell asleep on the sofa.  I had been awake since 5 am which I could have done without after a first week in a new job.

Even though I was looking forward to cooking today, I was too tired so James finished off supper, thank goodness.  He sliced the mushrooms and gently fried them in butter with a tiny amount of salt.  They were delicious.  Very meaty in texture and full of flavour.

The gammon was served with mashed potato, carrots, peas and a spoonful of the glaze.

The gammon was tender and flavoursome but I realised too late I should have pre-soaked it so it was a bit too salty.  Not inedible but not as good as it should have been.  It will be good to use up in a soup or to add to an omelette or something in the week.

Looking back at my food today, I can see that it was all very, colourful.

The End Of The Week

I survived the first week at a new job.  Phew.  We are all still alive and happy ( I think) but I am knackered.   Completely, totally and utterly.  I could have done without the boiler giving up on Wednesday, since when we have had no hot water or heating.  Thank you Marion for the hot shower last night.  And I could have done without coming up with a fancy dress outfit for World Book Day today but ‘Just William’ did look adorable.  I definitely need to rethink my eating strategy as wandering round Borough Market is proving too tempting.

Tonight’s blog will be brief.  I hope you will forgive me but the first glass of red is warming up my cockles and I have an irresistible urge to snuggle up on the sofa with the little fella.

Breakfast – you were right Vicky and I made my own to take in: quinoa, mango and pecans.  It tasted lovely and I will do this again.

Lunch – I had to return.  Look at that one in the middle.

Here’s a close up of that oozing runny cheese.

The Raclette maker thinks he will sell 16 halves of cheese today as the market was so crowded!

It was lovely again but not quite as perfect as yesterdays, mainly because the turnover was so rapid it was all melted and oozy.  Which was delicious but I really like the well cooked and chewy bits.

A potter around the market.  I love this fruit and vegetable stall,  Turnips.  James loves mushrooms so I bought him some pink and yellow ones.  I may even be favourite wife tomorrow when he has those for breakfast!

I also bought some blood oranges which are from Sicily.  I thought of you Mirella and if you want some next week I’ll get some for you :-).  They only have a 6 week season and this is week 3.  I had one this afternoon and it was lovely.

I also decided a Friday treat was in order – a ginger flapjack.  Really good with big chunks of crystallised ginger in it.

Back at home, the heating engineer was here but the bad news is that we need a new gas valve so he has to contact the boiler company.  So my little fantasy or relaxing in a hot bubble bath remains just that, a fantasy for now!  He did leave us a fan heater which helps as it is much colder today.  A large glass of red helped too.

Supper was Boeuf Bourgignon left over from last Friday which Kath and I made – thinking of you all gals!  With a jacket potato and butter.  No veg – I just couldn’t be bothered.

So the week has ended.  It was a good week and I am looking forward to the week ahead.  But not as much as I am looking forward to this weekend.  Have a good one x

Buzzing

I decided to not eat breakfast at home today and I caught an earlier train.  Which gave me time to look round the market for a healthy breakfast.

I have been past this grocers but never in it before – the trains run just above it.

I chose a smoothie.

I went for the strawberry one which was made with freshly squeezed orange juice, strawberries, banana and natural yogurt.   It was good.  And I bought 2 clementines to have mid morning as well.

At lunch time I wandered back in to the market and it was buzzing.  So many new stalls open up on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Such as this lovely fish stall

And an amazing vegetable stall, which not only sells the most amazing produce but it is all arranged so well.

I wanted to buy it all!  But for lunch I went to the Raclette stand.  The last time I was in the market on a busy day I had already eaten lunch but I have wanted to try a Raclette ever since.  The cheese is cut and placed in a special contraption

which heats the cheese under a little grill so it melts

and once melted it is scraped on to potatoes and served with gherkins and small onions.

WOW!

Nothing more to say.  Just WOW!  It is not a huge portion so really not a diet disaster, especially since I had such a light breakfast.

I stood and ate it in the sunshine in the gardens of Southwark Cathedral which was packed with people.  As was the market.  It was buzzing which gave it a great vibe.

I have been buzzing too, busy as a little bee at work, which is going well but is getting busy.  Buzzzzz.

Bread Pain

Last night I soaked oats with almond milk and frozen berries.  In the morning they were added to the blender with banana and some coconut nut butter.  Delicious.

When I got off my train, I was drawn, helplessly back to Monmouth.  Like a moth to a flame I joined the queue and bought a coffee.

They are only small and I had a filter coffee to save some points from the milky coffees I prefer.

At work they do a “fruit frenzy Wednesday”.  Boxes of fruit are placed in each kitchen for staff to help themselves to.  So I did; white melon, orange melon, blueberries, raspberries, grapes and a strawberry.  I liked that!

Back to Borough Market for a potter about while choosing lunch.

I wanted a salad and headed in to Le Pain Quotidien. What a delightful find.  This boulangerie/patisserie/restaurant is simply furnished in a beautiful building where the food is the star of the show.  I could have eaten it all.  And one day I will sit at their communal table and eat bread with milk chocolate and plain chocolate and white chocolate spread.  yes folks, you read that correctly – WHITE CHOCOLATE SPREAD 🙂 .  How long until my birthday so I can go and pig out?

I chose a smoked chicken salad with raisin bread.  I should have said no to the bread but having entered this foodie paradise “yes please” just popped out, all on its own when I was asked if I wanted any.

The salad came with a basil dressing and a runny mayonnaise.  And croutons – oops.

The raisin bread was perfect.  Moist and chewy and full of flavour.  It came with a little pack of butter.

This was a lovely lunch but I am not sure how many calories/points it had.  Too many I suspect.  So despite being lovely and I highly recommend this place,  I will have to try and avoid it in future.

I swam against the tide after work and walked North across London Bridge in rush hour.  I wanted to pop in to a shop on the North side and enjoyed this amazing view of London lighting up for the evening.  St.Paul’s is in the background, as majestic as ever.

Super was super quick and easy.  Steamed kale and leeks with smoked salmon.  The keen eyed amongst you will have spotted the butter in the photo.  Oh come on!  I can’t just eat a pile of steamed veggies – the butter and lots of black pepper elevates this from edible to tasty 🙂 .

Call it bread or du pain, it is not diet friendly for me and I really do need to leave it alone.

Panini Person

Breakfast was nearly ready when I came downstairs this morning.  The buckwheat and chia seeds I had soaked in water the night before had swelled up.

So they were ready to go in to the blender, along with a small banana and almond milk.  Hey presto – a smoothie.  It took seconds to make and I sipped it while I made Harvey’s which took ages, thanks to him wanting fresh cherries, which left my fingers stained all day!  My smoothie was thick and tasty.  50 g buckwheat groats, 1 tsp chia seeds, 200ml almond milk = 8 WW points.

Work continues to go well and I am loving my location.  The ease of a 10 minute walk from the station is appreciated but I also love the views and being so close to Borough Market.  If I walk out of my office and look left, I can see St.Paul’s Cathedral and Southwark Bridge.

If I look right I can see the bridge taking the trains to Cannon Street station.

And immediately outside the office is a pub!

I wandered in to Borough Market and was tempted by Gastronomica, an Italian foodie stall which is inside the covered part of the market.

I ordered a ham, mozarella and green leaf panini which they heated for me.  They wrapped it up for me and I went and sat in the sunshine outside Southwark Cathedral to enjoy it.  A white bread panini is not a great diet choice but there was not much cheese inside it.  It was delicious.  I wouldn’t normally say I was a panini person, but I was today.  Hard to know the points so I am guessing 10 as that seems to be an average for a panini.

How beautiful these buildings are.  I am always amazed that these magnificent buildings were designed and then made so many hundreds of years ago.  This is the oldest Cathedral church in London.

This little garden was a great place to sit and watch the comings and goings.

I walked a different route back to the office and was thrilled to discover my favourite coffee shop ever – Monmouth Coffee.  I used to treat myself to a Monmouth coffee when I was at University and walked past their Seven Dials cafe on the way to lectures.

I was in there in a second and ordered a small flat white.  Their coffee is FAB-U-LOUS.  The one I had today had an undertone of burnt caramel which was just superb.  I could have had another one but I resisted.  Unfortunately I didn’t resist their chocolate brownie which is one of the best chocolate concoctions I have had.  It is so rich and chocolatey and gooey.  Mmmmmm, so good.

Points for a brownie vary so much!  I have put down 10 points for this one plus 4 for the flat white which was quite small.

Back at work I was pretty good with drinks.  2 cups of tea today plus 4 cups of water.  No snacks apart from an apple in the morning.  So apart from the brownie, a reasonable days eating.

Back home I had an easy supper.  Last week I made a huge portion of black bean soup and froze 6 individual portions.  I took one out of the freezer this morning so all I had to do tonight was heat it up and then I served it with 30g mature Cheddar (14 WW points).

Luckily ( since I have 5 more portions to go) it froze beautifully and tasted as lovely tonight as when I made it last week.  This soup is great and I really enjoyed it.  Hurrah for my freezer 🙂

Heigh Ho

Heigh Ho and off to work I go!

I prepared breakfast last night of 30 g oats, 1 tsp chia seeds, 250ml almond milk and 50 ml coconut water which I left to soak overnight.  Served with 1/2 tsp cinnamon and some strawberries.

Harvey, who usually has to lie in bed in the mornings waiting until it is late enough for him to be allowed out of bed, was delighted with the early start and we had breakfast together.

Up in London I grabbed a skinny latte from EAT and headed in to the office.

Everything was fine.  The office has a ‘hot desk’ policy i.e. you are not given your own desk but find one that is available.  On arrival I was given a lap top and a power cable and shown to an empty desk.  But that may not be where I sit tomorrow.  Hot desking appeals to my sense of efficiency and economy (i.e. you don’t pay premium office costs for empty desks when people are absent) but it does have practical challenges.  Such as there is no where that is “yours” to keep anything.  I am sure it will be ok though.

The office has fabulous views along the River Thames and is very close to my train station, London Bridge, which is a major bonus for me.  To get to the office I have to walk through the wonderful Borough Market, which is where I went for lunch with three of the ladies I work with.  We went to Amano where I chose a salad.

On a base of salad leaves was some spicy chicken, prawns and roasted vegetables.  The brown stuff all over the top, which looks revolting, was a Balsamic dressing which actually tasted really good.  The salad was good too.  It all tasted fresh and I really enjoyed it.

I managed to not overdose on coffee and tea in the office.  I had the skinny latte on my way in and a cup of tea in the afternoon plus 5 cups of water so I was pleased with that.

I bought a bag of apples at the station on the way home as I felt really hungry.  The man opposite me had an Apple and so did I !  Ha ha, how funny am I?  Actually I ate 3 apples as I was really hungry and enjoyed an hour spent reading my book/Kindle.

Back home I made a quick but nutritious supper of a smoked salmon omelette (85 g smoked salmon and 2 eggs) with a heap of kale.  I fried it in one pan to save on washing up.

Quick and easy and tasty.

So day one is done and so far all is well with the world.  Work seems to be fine and my children, family, home and dogs all seem to have survived very well without me.  And I coped without them.  Just.

I consumed 32 points today, which is my daily allowance so I am very pleased with that.  This woking lark could be OK.

That Sunday Feeling

It has been a long time since I have had that Sunday feeling!  About 11 months in fact.  11 months since I have had to think about what do I need to organise and prepare so I am ready for work tomorrow?

I spent the morning in Ramsgate and it was sunny again 🙂 .  We all enjoyed another long and leisurely breakfast.

Egg and bacon today, followed by bread, cheese, jam and fruit.

The food was good but the company was the best thing.  After breakfast we chatted via Facebook Video to Katherina who is recuperating from surgery and was unable to join us.  Having Katherina with us was the only thing that would have made this weekend better but at least we got to see her for a chat.

I know it is my house and I should perhaps not make such boasts but the first floor sitting room is a lovely room.  It is large and spacious and always flooded with light thanks to the large bay window.  When it is sunny outside the sun streams in and it really is one of my favourite places to sit and relax.

My friends have a habit of re-arranging the furniture in this room and this group was no exception.

I am happy with the new layout and happier to sit in it with such lovely company while we had more tea and coffee and carried on chatting.

I don’t think we stopped all weekend.

Chatting that is.  And laughing, shrieking, giggling, reminiscing, discussing, debating.  And listening.  Lots and lots of listening.

After a flurry of tidying, cleaning and bed making, it was time to say farewell.  Good-byes can be hard but although I miss my friends this was not a sad good-bye.  As a group we have never spent a whole weekend together before.  I felt reassured for the future of these special friendships that we can meet up again after not seeing each other for years in some cases, and just pick up where we left off from, as if we had last seen each other yesterday.   We all had a great time so I know we can do this again one day and I look forward to it.

It was lovely to get home too and we had some scones and tea and then I began to get myself prepared for tomorrow.  James cooked supper: salmon with new potatoes, green beans, peas, carrots and spinach which was lovely.

Now that Sunday feeling is really kicking in.  A blend of happy memories and contented exhaustion from a fabulous weekend, planning and preparation for the week ahead and anxiety about what the next day will bring.

Super Smashing Sunny Saturday

This Saturday I decided to try and eat healthy food but also allow myself some treats.  I was with some very special friends and thanks to the weather we were able to plan a long walk .  I did not photograph everything I ate as there was some snacking but I captured most of it.

Last night before bed, Kath and Alison made some almond Danish pastries as they needed to prove so they got them going last night.  I woke up and came down to see these beauties sitting on the side.

We had a long and leisurely breakfast.  I started with Alpen, berries and yogurt,

followed by one of those amazing pastries,

and then some brown bread with Brie and grapes.

The sun was shining, the sky was blue and we set out for a coastal walk to Broadstairs.

It was so wonderful to all be together.  We worked together 22 years ago so have known each other a long time!

How amazing that it was warm enough to sit outside in England in February!

Viking Bay was bathed in sunshine.

We followed the footsteps of one of our literary heroes

and had a coffee at The Albion, which we enjoyed sitting outside.

We visited the Charles Dickens museum in Broadstairs.

Charles Dickens fans may have heard of Betsey Trotwood, the Aunt of David Copperfield.  The museum is located in the house previously inhabited by Mary Pearson, the lady who inspired Dicken’s characterisation of Betsey.

There is a lot of information about Dickens and the museum includes letters he wrote and furniture and possessions he owned.  This is the parlour where he used to sit when he visited.

This is the view from the house towards the sea.  It was wonderful to visit the Dickens museum during his bicentenary.

Fortified with an ice-cream from Morelli’s, we left sunny Broadstairs

and walked back to sunny Ramsgate.

Time for tea, which we ate while watching ‘Bridesmaids’.

This was definitely neither diet friendly nor healthy but it was a lovely treat.

After changing in to our evening wear and toasting Kath bon voyage with a glass of Bollinger we headed off to the local pub for a drink and then dinner at a Thai restaurant, Surin.  It is fantastic being able to walk everywhere 🙂

The food was very tasty.  It was not as beautifully presented or dainty as some Thai restaurants I have been to but the flavours were lovely and the service was good.  I had Tom Kar Gai (spicy coconut soup with lemongrass, chilli, mushrooms and chicken)

followed by broccoli fried with garlic (this was amazing)

which I ate with egg fried rice and roast duck in red curry.  Yummy.

Olivia entertained us by making a chicken from the napkin!

What a fantastic day and evening.  We would have had fun wherever we went but to have spent so much time together in the sunshine was a bonus.

Final Friday

Guess what I made my breakfast with today.

Perhaps this helps.

Angela at Oh She Glows posted a brilliant blog this week about top vegan snacks.  I would like to try them all but one I had to try immediately was her recipe for Clementine Creamsicle Smoothie.  I read that last night so was able to peel, chop and freeze the clementines, avocado and bananas for breakfast today.

Harvey enjoyed his breakfast – “is it ice-cream?” he asked.  Nope, but it tastes like it and is all healthy ingredients.  I did add some maple syrup to his as I omitted the date and it was not quite sweet enough for him.  I wanted him to have a boost of nutrients as he has a bad cough and a sore throat so this was a perfect breakfast for a poorly boy.  And I loved it too.

When I made an orange smoothie earlier in the week, I used fresh oranges and the blender left bits of orange.  But by freezing the clementines (and I used 1 orange too), it enabled the blender to make it completely smooth.  No lumps at all.

When it came to making it, I did not have a tin of coconut milk.  I thought I did but it was a tin of young coconut meat in syrup which is not a product you will find in your average supermarket.

I drained the syrup and added some extra almond milk to get the desired consistency.  But I have given Angela’s recipe so you can have a go at making this.  And I think you should.

Clementine Creamsicle Smoothie

Ingredients (serves 1 or 2)

  • 1 large ripe banana, peeled, sliced, and frozen
  • 1/2 small avocado, flesh scooped out, and frozen
  • 2-3 Clementines, peeled and broken into segments and frozen
  • 2 tbsp coconut milk (the cream from top of can)
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (watery part) OR 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp milk (I used unsweetened almond milk)
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract
  • 1 Medjool date, pitted and roughly chopped (optional)
  • 1-2 tsp fresh lemon juice

Method

Place all ingredients in a blender and blitz until smooth.

Mmmmmm, this was so good.  Thanks Angela!

I confess I did shed a tear singing along to ‘Candyman’ in the car this morning.  Every Friday Chris Evans plays Candyman as we leave the house to take Harvey to school.  And we sing along.  I use the term “singing” loosely to describe my caterwauling but I enjoy a sing song.  I was sad to think this was my last chance to take the little fella to school for a long time.  I think he was relieved to be at the end of my singing.  Then Chris Evans dedicated the Candyman to everyone who works at the company I am starting to work for on Monday – how bizarre is that?

I had a coffee in The George hotel in Cranbrook with Julie today which was a lovely way to spend the morning.

I grabbed 40 g Brie for lunch, packed up, collected Kath and headed to Ramsgate.

Part of Kath’s farewell includes a weekend in Ramsgate with myself and 6 other wonderful ladies who all used to work together.  Sorry Marie but I took the photos before you got here!

These wonderful women are so dear to me and it is a real treat to spend the whole weekend together.

I had forgotten the fact that we all think we are right, all at the same time.  Most of us are very assertive and have loads of opinions so the volume in the room is very loud and excitable.  Absolutely marvellous:-)

We gave Kath a necklace and a kitchen vase from Doris and Co that said “Old friends are best”.  She was very pleased with them.

We had boeuf bourgignon, mashed potato and steamed vegetables,

followed by a cinnamon crust flan which was pastry made with cinnamon and a filling of mixed red berries. Alison made some lovely sugar covered shapes with the leftover pastry.

I have been looking forward to this weekend for a long time 🙂

Ladies Who Lunch

I was going out for lunch (yes, AGAIN) so I had a very low point but healthy breakfast.  A smoothie made with 200ml coconut water, 1 tbsp sunflower seed butter, 2 tbsp natural probiotic yogurt, lots of blueberries and a banana.  6 WW points.

Yum.

I went to Uckfield today to meet my sister Abi

and friend Alison.

Abi and I went to Uckfield in January to the cinema.  Neither of us had been there before and thought it looked worth re-visiting for lunch one day.  I had a lovely cafe in mind but having wandered up and down the High Street

we didn’t see anywhere we really fancied.  There was a lovely homes and gifts store called Carvills

and a lovely Deli but everything else was pretty standard and uninspiring.  So we went to Pizza Express.  While we were ordering I had a Diet Coke and some marinated olives (1 WW point).

I had the Salad Nicoise which had various salad leaves, cucumber, tomato, tuna, anchovies, capers and boiled eggs with a creamy dressing and dough sticks.  I couldn’t find the points value on-line so I used the points from another salad, including the dough sticks and salad dressing as I ate them all.  13 WW points.  It was delicious.

Alison and I wondered what was the most fattening; an average pizza or the salad + dough sticks + dressing.  Well the average pizza has 24 points but a salad has 13 so I made a good choice.

Pizza Express nowadays serve a small portion of a dessert with coffee which is an excellent idea.  I chose the Semi Froddo which has nougat and crunchy praline.  It was delicious.  Again I couldn’t find the points on-line so I used the points from a portion of Ben and Jerry’s which is a high fat and high sugar ice-cream.  8 WW points.

We had a lovely time.  I rarely go out for lunch with any of my lovely sisters so this was a real treat.  I was really pleased Alison could take some time off work to join us and we had great fun and a good catch up.

This afternoon the sun was shining brightly and it was really warm.  I drove home with the windows open and thoroughly enjoyed driving though the beautiful Sussex and Kent countryside feeling warm air around me.  When I got home loads of the Spring flowers were out – crocuses, snowdrops and primroses.  It was really beautiful and very uplifting.

Supper was a simple affair.  I had 7 Swedish meatballs (6 points) with a heap of steamed kale and carrots which I served with 2 tsp butter (2 points).

I really enjoyed the veg and am surprised by myself as a few months ago I hated kale.  I then started to like eating it in a stir fry but now I can eat it and enjoy it steamed.

Followed by half a mango and blueberries.

The mango was perfectly ripe so it was soft and sweet.  A perfect ending to another lovely day.
