The Fast Diet

Several of my friends are doing the ‘Fast Diet’ which is also known as the ‘5:2 Diet’.  In a very brief summary, on the Fast Diet you eat what you like for 5 days a week and then “fast” the other 2 days a week.  This is not a complete fast but a very low calorie intake;  500 Kcal for women and 600 for men.

When I first heard about it I thought there was no way I could do that so I marvelled at their willpower and went on a vegan diet instead !!  I was tempted to try it when I met Jeremy and Helen recently because they are doing it.  One of them works full-time in an office and the other works at home looking after 2 young boys.  This made me think it could be doable even when you are busy so I bought the book.  I bought this one by Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer.

Since giving up my vegan diet I have been over-eating and undoing any good work I managed while on the  restricted diet.  So I decided I would try a fast day.  The book says to find the way of eating that suits you.  Some people like small portions of food through out the day, whereas others prefer just 1 or 2 meals a day.  I decided to take in “breakfast” but to see how long I could go before eating it.  I know that when I start eating, I seem to keep eating.  So that was my strategy.

I arrived at the office today with a boiled egg in one pot and a peeled and sliced pink grapefruit in another.  I brought that in from home.  On the way in I picked up a large black coffee and during the morning I had herbal tea and water.  I felt fine.  I was able to function quite normally and had not eaten a thing.  It definitely helped that I was very busy today so time flew.  It was also good that the office was quiet (many people work from home on a Friday plus it is half term) so I was not often tempted by colleagues eating at their desks.

I wanted to make sure I exercised so despite the light snow fall and freezing temperature, I decided to walk down to Borough Market and have a wheatgrass shot (20 calories!).  If I walked the most direct route it would have been 1.2 miles to get there.  But I walked a much longer route.  One of my colleagues has a good route which starts off in the Barbican but I have never managed to repeat that route.  I just get lost in the Barbican which is really frustrating.

I came across this woman, who was hanging around near the theatre.  She seemed quite lost too.

Gold statue in Barbican

I remember when the Barbican opened in the early 1970’s.  It seemed such a strange idea to want to live so close to the City in a little community that had homes, a school, shops and entertainment all there, in one development.  I wish I had bought one of the flats then – how they have gone up in value and nowadays loads of people want to live close to where they work.Barbican 2

Each time I get lost in the Barbican, I am surprised by how deserted it is.  Endless concrete walkways and hardly anyone around.  It is quite bizarre.Barbican 1

Coming out of the Barbican I found myself on a series of high walkways which led to the Museum of London.  At the end of the road called ‘London Wall’, was a large part of the original,  erm … London Wall.  This is the wall that used to circle the City – the square mile.

London Wall City of London shield

Back down at ground level I couldn’t resist a slight detour to St.Paul’s Cathedral. I took the time to walk round it and admire it.  This is the rear viewrear of St.Paul's

and this is the view of the front.front of St.Paul's

I eventually arrived in Borough Market.  Oh how I have missed this lovely place.  I have been reading about the grand re-opening and it is so much bigger now!  Even more gorgeous and lovely than before and it was packed with people today too which is great. Those stall holders deserve plenty of custom for standing there in the cold.  There was cheese everywhere so not a great place to be when on a very restricted calorie day.Borough Cheese Company

More cheese!

More cheese

This is what I came for.wheatgrass and shot

A 3 mile round trip for a thimble full of wheatgrass.  I don’t even like it but I wanted to make every calorie count today and this is meant to be amazingly good for you.Wheatgrass shot close up

I bought another black coffee on the way back to the office as I was beginning to feel hungry and my hands were so cold it was lovely to have something to warm them up on.  Back at the office I had another herbal tea and that kept me going until 4pm when I was too hungry to wait any more so I enjoyed my grapefruit and boiled egg.

Back at home I was planning on salmon and vegetables.  But the salmon fillet I had used up all my remaining calories.  I did consider having half the salmon with vegetables but only for about half a second.  I steamed the salmon and then went crazy and ground pepper all over it.  Living on the wild side!
Steamed salmon

Calories consumed:

59 g boiled egg = 85
nearly 300g pink grapefruit = 90
Wheatgrass shot = 20
136 g salmon = 306

Daily total = 501

I am amazed at how many calories are in certain foods.  I would never have guessed a grapefruit had as many calories as an egg.  So fasting like this 2 days a week will be really good to get me used to appreciating the calories in all my food.  Weight Watchers doesn’t count points for fruits and most vegetables so you get in the habit of eating loads of them which is not good.  This fasting regime will help shrink my stomach and give me the confidence to eat small meals.  I have proved today I am not about to faint or collapse if I don’t eat.  Plus I managed to work and walk.

I have almost enjoyed today.  I perhaps foolishly, feel rather proud of myself for sticking to 500 calories.  I feel a sense of achievement and although I am looking forward to breakfast tomorrow, I am planning a healthy start to the day.  I do not have the urge to binge and eat rubbish.  This temple is feeling virtuous and wants to remain so.

Some Superfood Some Not So Super

It was a very cold day in London today.  I woke up feeling tired as I had slept badly.  It always happens when I have a couple of drinks even though last night I didn’t go mad.   I had 2 gin and tonics and a glass of wine with dinner.  I went out with Cherry-Ann and Zoe R. from work and we had a lovely drink at Vinopolis’ Bar Bleu ( 2 for the price of one!!) and then supper in TAS, the Turkish restaurant.

I popped in to pod to have one of their superfood breakfasts.

Superfood egg breakfast

I am becoming quite a fan of pod.  I like the fact their food is cooked fresh when you order it but quickly.  They are very efficient.  My breakfast was scrambled eggs with tomatoes, chillies, spinach, sunflower seeds and Feta cheese served with 1 slice of lightly buttered granary toast.  I know, thanks to their on-line nutrition information that this had 367 calories.  I also had a small latte which is about 200 calories.

pod bag and breakfast

For lunch I walked up the road to Itsu.  This is on the corner of my street and Moorgate and looks out over Finsbury Square.  Yesterday was my first ever visit to Itsu as I met Olivia there for lunch.

Itsu was set up by Julian Metcalf who founded Pret.  It’s USP is healthy and low fat food such as sushi and noodle pots.  I think we are led to believe that living on Itsu food gives one a figure like the ladies on the packet.  They are not sexist – there are bags with hunky men on.  I was just unlucky 🙂

Itsu bag

I bought the smoked chicken salad.  It was totally delicious and I want it again.

There was a generous portion of smoked chicken served on a bed of leaves and fresh herbs with sesame seeds and a tasty dressing, edamame beans and raw green beans.Itsu chicken

With seasoned rice and a fantastic dressing made with coriander, lime and tofu.  It was exceptionally good and just under 500 calories.Itsu rice

For dinner we are having a tray of roasted veggies : aubergine, red and yellow peppers, leeks and carrots with sausages.  Good old fashioned British bangers.  I know they are not healthy or diet friendly but it is very cold and just what we all fancy.  I didn’t add any oil to this as the sausages contain more then enough fat and every 10-15 minutes I stir everything so the veggies don’t stick or dry out.veggies in roasting trayI would have been ok today in terms of calories, despite the sausages,  except this afternoon I had a boredom blip and ate a lemon with poppy seed muffin plus 2 caramel biscuits with a cup of tea 😦

28 Day Vegan Challenge : They Think It’s All Over

It is now!

Yup, I have given up my vegan experiment.  It was just too difficult when I am out of the house 5 long days a week.  Plus I am working very hard at the moment so when I am home I do not have the energy after such a long day to prepare something to take in the next day.  I was definitely losing weight, despite the nuts I nibbled.  Did I feel better?  I can not honestly say.  Mainly because the vegan diet coincided with a busy time at work and too much going on at home.  I can confirm I did NOT feel worse.  One possible benefit was that I do sometimes suffer from very itchy shins and that went away so possibly that was diet related.

Dieting is hard enough and restricting what I eat at the same time was just too much.  So I enjoyed a shepherd’s pie on Sunday and cheese on toast.  I had promised myself I could have a toasted cheese sandwich when I finished my vegan challenge.  I had one yesterday from EAT with ham in it too and it was heavenly.

I was in a different office yesterday, near Liverpool Street Station and I really enjoyed the walk back to London Bridge at the end of the day.  There is so much building work going on at the moment in London.

The Gherkin amongst building works

This is ‘The Gherkin’ – I had not realised how shiny it was until seeing it at this angle with no buildings obscuring the view.

The Gherkin

I was enjoying being outside so I took a little detour to walk through Leadenhall Market.Leadenhall Market 1

Unfortunately the shops in here are a little uninspiring but the buildings are beautiful.  When I worked near here, many years ago, there was a Cranks wholefood shop which was excellent for lunches and a music shop, Farringdon’s, which sold some unusual CDS and was good for browsing in at lunch time.  I did enjoy a browse through a book shop which has been here for a long time.entrance to Leadenhall Market

This angle is looking at the Lamb Tavern and you can see part of Lloyds of London, the insurance market at the end.  It is the silver building with all the pipes!Leadenhall Market and lloyds

I have eaten far too much bread and biscuits and even chocolate this week.  I went a bit crazy after opening up the range of foods I am allowed again.  This is such a struggle but one I must persevere with.  Tuna and sweetcorn for supper with 2 large juicy tomatoes and some grapes.  That may be the first fruit and vegetables I have eaten since Sunday.  yes, the diet has been that bad!tomatoes, tuna and grapes

I really admire people who stick to a restricted diet but it is not for me.  I will however try to add more vegan foods to our diet and cut down on cheese and butter.

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Day 16

Yes, it really is only day 16!  I wanted eggs for breakfast but vegans don’t eat eggs.  I did not want breakfast or cereal or fruit,  so I used up some left over rice and had it with some stir fried vegetables.

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Days 12 and 13

This is a blog of 2 tales.  Day 12 was really good but today was really hard.  I was in a picky mood and unfortunately I gave in to my sweet cravings.  So I have stuck to being vegan but eaten things I really shouldn’t have. As you are about to see!

pod is my current favourite go to food place as it has a good range of vegan foods and tries to be healthy and ethical.  Unfortunately they sock these Bounce balls which are completely addictive.

Ingredients: Almonds, oats, brown rice, grape juice, brown rice starch, rice bran, raisins, sesame seeds, vanilla, spirulina, sea salt, natural flavouring, brown rice malts and ginseng.  Each little packet contains 180 kcal.Spirulina Bounce

I had this with a soy latte for breakfast.  It is moist, sweet and chewy.  Quite delicious but also has a high sugar content so is best avoided.  But if you see one, try them as they are really good!  42 g of absolute yumminess.Half eaten Bounce

Lunch yesterday was amazing!Turkish flatbread wrap 3

I walked round the corner to the market and bought this amazing wrap at the Turkish stall.  The dough is rolled out in to a huge circle and then spinach is laid across half the circle.  The half of dough with no spinach is folded over to create a spinach sandwich.  This is then cooked on a domed hot plate.  Once the bread is cooked, they fill it for you with your choice of fillings.   I had mine stuffed with salad: lettuce, saurkraut (nearly liking it!!!) onions, tomatoes and corn then drizzled with chilli sauce.Turkish flatbread wrap 2

Totally delicious and amazing.  It would be even better with cheese in and when I am no longer a vegan I am celebrating with one of these packed with cheese too 🙂Turkish flatbread wrap

For dinner I was meeting Gail.  I managed to get away at 5pm which is unheard of, and I enjoyed walking through London as darkness descended.  We went for an Indian and I had sag aloo (spinach and potatoes) with tarka dal and a house specialty with chick peas.  It was very tasty and surprisingly not as oily as curries can be.  I did think later though that it was probably cooked with ghee which means I have not been strictly vegan which would be disappointing.  I don’t know for sure though.

I got a bit lost walking to Gail’s and ended up at St.Paul’s Cathedral which looks magnificent at night time.  It is one of my favourite buildings in the world so I was not at all disappointed to be so close to it.St.Paul's at night

Today I had a black coffee and a breakfast smoothie from pod which contained banana, apple juice, muesli, soya milk and agave syrup.  It was good and made a change from the breakfast I usually make but too sweet.
Smoothie and black coffee

For lunch I went back to pod and had their ‘Superfood Soba’ which is kelp and rice noodles in a vegetable broth with edamame, mixed vegetables, red chilli and coriander.  It contains 323 calories and was huge so it was warming and satisfying.  I will have that again.

pod’s website, click here, is great as it gives a complete nutritional breakdown of their food.  I wish all companies did that.  Forget traffic lights on foods, just provide the nutritional info so we can see what we are eating.

Superfood Soba  If I had finished lunch there I would have been ok but I wanted sweet treats so I had a Bounce ball and a packet of popcorn and a packet of seeds.

Calories consumed today:
Breakfast smoothie = 590 ( I was shocked when I looked that up!!!!)
Soba noodles = 323 (really good value as tasty and filling)
Seeds = 152
Bounce = 180
Popcorn = 190

Total calories by end of lunch time = 1435

I drank herbal teas or black coffee so would have been ok if I stopped there but this afternoon there was a queue for tea.  There is always a bit of a stampede in the afternoon as the in-office cafeteria shuts at 4pm.  I misjudged the time and was in a queue.  Anyway, while queuing I noticed 2 little packets of nakd bars.  So I bought them both.  The ingredients are only nuts and fruits but my goodness, they are full of sugar and calories.  ‘Pecan Pie’ was 156 calories and ‘Cashew Cookie’ was 143 calories.  But a lot of those calories come from sugars.  So they are much better for you than eating chocolate bars as they have some nutritional value but should be left as very occasional treats.

They brought my total calories today to 1,734.  Low enough to prevent weight gain but not low enough for fat loss so I must cut the “healthy” sweet treats out.

To end on a positive note I have done a lot of walking during the past 2 days so I am very pleased about that.  I am working from home tomorrow and looking forward to making something healthy.  And vegan.

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Day 11

I apologise in advance for a very brief blog but I am very tired!

Breakfast was the usual; 30 g oats, 15 g chia seeds with hemp seed milk and a banana.

For lunch I had a pot of the noodles I had made on Saturday.  I’d had to go out at  lunch time to run errands.  I was really hungry while I was out so I bought a bag of Bombay Mix to munch on which is made from lentils and nuts mainly so ticked the vegan box.  I was so cold when I got back to the office I decided to heat up the noodles which didn’t really work.  It somehow made everything seem tasteless and rubbery which is a shame as they were lovely when eaten cold on Saturday.

noodles and veg and peanuts

We were incredibly busy at work today but I felt cold and tired and had a bit of a gippy tummy.  I also felt incredibly hungry so I popped out in the afternoon and bought a soya milk latte, a small bag of popcorn,  a Bounce protein ball and a tiny packet of Booja Booja vegan chocolate truffles.  The chocolates were 2 small truffles that were the size of dice.  So a bit of a binge this afternoon but it just had to be done today!

At supper time I wasn’t hungry but I wanted to pack in some nutrients so I made a smoothie with kale, spinach, frozen berries, a banana, hemp seed milk and some Udo’s oil.

I feel better just looking at a pile of greens and berries.berries 'n' greens

I didn’t have quite enough milk so I used some of this cherry juice I bought in Vegetare on Saturday.  It worked really well.

It came out looking like a chocolate milk shake and tasted pretty good too.

I don’t know about you but I am very tired and quite cold so I am about to retreat to my bed!  Have a good evening (or day, depending on where you are and when you read my blog).

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Day 10

What a very wet and grey and miserable day we all woke up to!  No promise of anything other than rain and cold rain at that.

Breakfast this morning required a little assembly.  In the clear bowl is a banana, half of which was mashed and the other half cut in to small chunks.  That was mixed with 150 ml hemp seed milk and 15 g white chia seeds and left over night.  So by morning it was thick and almost set; it had the consistency of a thick yogurt.  In the sieve is 150 g raw buckwheat groats which were soaked in water overnight and then rinsed.  In the other bowl is a mango.

3 bowls

I stirred the buckwheat groats in to the milk/banana/chia seeds and served with mango.  buckwheat and mango breakfast

Buckwheat made a change from oats and I really like them.  They retain a slight crunch and leave a clean and fresh feeling.  I enjoyed this.buckwheat breakfast close up

We went out for lunch today to Napoli, an Italian restaurant in Westerham.  We met Jeremy and Helen and their 2 lovely boys.J, J and R

I thought an Italian would have been good for a vegan.  Wrong !!!! There was one item on the starters menu so I had it – tomato, oregano and basil bruschetta.  It was really good.  The tomatoes were sweet and juicy and the bruschetta very garlicky.tomato bruscheta

On the main course menu there was nothing vegan!  The staff were very obliging and made me a pizza with tomato sauce and roasted courgettes, aubergine and mushrooms.vegetable pizza

I had a little scoop of mango and lemon sorbet, which made a tasty vegan sweet treat.

lemon and mango sorbet

I really enjoyed seeing our dear friends and was just disappointed the weather was so dreadful which curtailed our plans of a walk after lunch.  It was too wet and cold for young boys and this old woman who was freezing within 5 minutes of being outside.  J and JI rested this afternoon in front of a lovely fire Harvey made.  We didn’t need supper but I am nibbling on some nuts with dried fruit and enjoying a glass of wine.  I was designated driver at lunch time so apart from a small beer I didn’t drink.  I am enjoying a glass now though.

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Day 9

This is so much easier at home!

I was up bright and early and inspired by the promise of a pretty sunrise which I hoped would turn in to a sunny day.

home sunrise 3

I was hoping for one of those bright crisp days with a deep blue sky and sunshine.home sunrise 2

Despite the early promise of sun, it was soon another grey day! But it was Saturday so I had the day at home.home sunrise 1

I broke my fast with tea with cayenne, maple syrup, goji berries and lemon. goji berries and lemon

I read through Hugh’s Veg everyday! while I chose what to make for lunch and supper.  This book contains so many healthy and vegan recipes.tea and Veg everyday!

With a menu planned, I made 30g porridge oats with 100ml hemp seed milk and water, 15 g chia seeds, 1 apple grated, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 20 g almond nut butter swirled in at the end.  I love the almond butter as it “melts” in to the warm food.  Warm and comforting and a lovely change from breakfast during the week which is always cold.porridge and nut butter

Mid morning I was hungry so I snacked on some almonds and dates.almonds and dates

I was pleased to see this sign on a packet of noodles – I wish more foods were clearly marked as it gets vey tedious having to read labels.

Noodles were on the menu for lunch.  I didn’t have enough of one type to just use one so I mixed two types together.  These wholewheat noodles are presented so well, with little bundles within the packet, tied together by a strip of paper.Udon noodles

I also used these green tea noodles.green tea noodles

From Veg everyday! I made the ‘Herby, Peanutty, Noodly Salad.  I have blogged the recipe for this dish previously here.  I used different noodles and vegetables today but the same sauce and it was as delicious as last time.noodle salad

and vegetabley!  Really tasty and the 4th portion is in a tupperware box in the fridge ready for a work lunch one day next week.vegetabley

I did something unusual today and went out for afternoon tea with Marion, Lisa, Suzanne and Mirella.  We went to the coffee shop at Hartley Dyke which I have never been to before even though I regularly shop at Hartley Dyke.  It was lovely sitting there looking out over the orchard.  There was NOTHING in there that I could eat though and apparently I am the first person who has asked for vegan food.  I am really surprised so vegans are clearly a minority in this part of the world.  Are there any vegans around here? So I drank Earl Grey tea with no milk but a sugar cube in each cup.  Having set my heart on a sweet treat I drank it rather than ate it!

I have missed my girlies so it was lovely to have a chance to catch up, especially sine I missed a night out we had planned this week due to me working too late (and starting so early).Suzanne, Lisa and Marion

Supper was another recipe from Veg everyday!  I made the roasted potatoes and aubergines.roast potatoes and aubergine 2

This is so easy it barely warrants a recipe.  I chopped up potatoes and 2 aubergines in to 2 cm cubes and roasted them in a hot oven for half an hour, turning once in the middle.  After half an hour I took them out and added 2 minced garlic cloves , a little lemon juice, salt and pepper.  I roasted them for another 15-20 minutes.

I served the potatoes and aubergine with tzatziki I made with soya yogurt, cucumber, olive oil, garlic and salt and some guacamole.  I used my standard guacamole recipe; 1 avocado, juice of 1 lime, finely chopped coriander and salt.  I also served some humous which came with roasted red peppers in it plus I had 1 falafel as there was an open packet which needed to be finished.

This was a lovely filling meal with big gutsy flavours, mainly provided by the garlic.  There will be no vampires in here tonight.roast potatoes and aubergine 1Have a great evening 🙂 .

28 Day Vegan Challenge : Day 6, 7 and 8

The good news is that I have remained vegan now for 8 days 🙂  The bad news is that I have another 20 days to go!  Only joking actually as I am really enjoying the challenge.  There have been times when it has saved me from eating naughties too.  For example we had a breakfast meeting on Wednesday and one of my colleagues kindly bought breakfast for everyone; croissants, chocolate brownies and chocolate chip muffins.  What are men like?  I don’t think a female would have bought that lot for breakfast.  I was the only one out of 8 of us not eating it.  And the only female.  I confess, that had I not been vegan I may have succumbed but I didn’t.

I have had a really busy week again with many early starts.  I enjoy travelling early as the train and streets are much quieter.  Look how few people are walking over London Bridge at 6:45 am yesterday morning.

looking North on London Bridge

The buildings were briefly touched with a warm orange colour as the sun rose.  This is the bridge between London Bridge and Cannon Street stations with Cannon Street station and then St.Paul’s in the background.Cannon St at sunrise

Looking East the sun is rising behind Tower Bridge.  How could you not love such a visual treat first thing in the morning?sunrise 7-2-13

I have not noted or photographed what I ate days 6 and 7.  Every day I have taken in oats which is about the best thing I can think of to take with me.  I took lunch in one day and yesterday had a falafel and humous wrap.  On day 6 I had nothing for dinner.  Having left home at 5:30am I didn’t get home until 9:30 pm and I was just too tired to do anything other then go straight to bed.  Last night I had guacamole and tomatoes on toast.  So nothing particularly interesting but all as healthy as I can manage when I am spending virtually no time at home.

Occasionally (twice) I have been really hungry so I have snacked on nuts.  Both the office canteen and EAT sell unroasted and unsalted nuts which is much healthier then the roasted and salted ones.

This morning I took oats in again, with almond milk, vanilla soya yogurt, chia seeds and blueberries.  I have been really disciplined about measuring my breakfasts in an attempt to keep portion sizes small.  I have 30 g oats and 150 ml milk.  1 tbsp chia seeds swell up in the milk.  Without them the consistency may be a little too runny. breakfast 8-2-13 at desk

The blueberries are frozen but by the time I get to work they have defrosted.  I have decided I actually prefer the frozen ones as they seem to have more flavour and they are definitely much cheaper.breakfast 8-2-13

We had a workshop from 12 – 3 today.  My 4 (male) colleagues nipped in to a sandwich shop to stock up with sandwiches, crisps and sugary drinks.  Adam had brought some cookies from home which I managed to decline.  I couldn’t find a vegan sandwich so went for a falafel and humous salad from EAT.  It was really nice but it does seem to be one of the very few options available to a vegan in a hurry.

falafel salad 2

There were 3 or 4 falafells, a small dollop of humous, an interesting mix of vegetables, chickpeas, parsley and  couscous.falafel salad 1

What is this then? thick smoothie 8-2-13

This lot once they have been through my blender; white chia seeds, hemp milk, frozen banana, frozen berries, apricot kernel and brazil nut butter, avocado, spinach and kale.  This was all I had the energy to make tonight for supper.   It was a bit thick and didn’t taste quite right so I tipped it back in and added 4 dates and some orange juice which made all the difference and I then really enjoyed it.smoothie ingredients 8-2-13

Thank goodness it’s Friday!  I have enjoyed work this week but it has been demanding, difficult and long.  Very, very long.  I have done quite a lot of walking as we have been to several offices around London.  I went to 3 today alone and we walked to them all; the office near Borough Market, the one near Moorgate and one on Bishopsgate which is near Liverpool Street Station.  I had not been to the office on Bishopsgate before and it is in a building I used to work in from 1993 – 1994!!  It was strange to go back there.  We have walked miles and the people I work with walk very quickly so it is quite hard for me to keep up but it all aids fitness so I shouldn’t complain.

All that remains is for me to go and treat myself to a well deserved glass of wine and to wish you all a very happy weekend.
