She’s Done It Again

Another day of fasting, another success.  yes, amazingly I managed 500 calories today.  I did find it really difficult, mainly I think because I felt so tired after my lovely weekend.

I went for the same strategy as before i.e. eat nothing all day and save the calories for supper.  I was in the office near Borough Market so I popped out at lunch time for some wheatgrass and to choose some lovely veggies for dinner.  Forgetting that most of the market is shut on a Monday :-(.

Market closed

When I discovered a few hardy stall holders braving the elements, I realised I had left my purse in the office so went back empty handed.  Disappointed about no Monmouth – black of course!Borough Market and Cathedral

For dinner tonight I had 250g of this chick pea and lentil dahl with 100g broccoli.broccoli and dahl

Served over 180g brown basmati rice.  It seemed like a huge plateful and I will go to bed tonight feeling very full.rice, dahl and broccoli

I calculated my calories perfectly tonight.

What a result.  Another result is that I lost another 2 pounds so I am very happy, particularly after my weekend’s excessive eating 🙂

Day in Durham

I had a rather energetic start to my day.  I spent about an hour and a half in the leisure centre at the hotel with Harvey.  We early birds made the most of the facilities.  I have been thinking about adding some swimming to my exercise programme and today confirmed it.  I really enjoy swimming and must do more.  We also made use of the steam room, sauna and jacuzzi but were not brave enough to go in the icy cold plunge pool!

H in the pool

Lara joined us for breakfast again.  Today I had a Continental style breakfast of cold meats and fish with cheese and fruit.  I didn’t actually eat the ham because when I put my glasses on I saw all the fat marbled through it which put me off.  I think my stint at being a vegan has helped me reduce my love for cheese because I didn’t particularly enjoy this cheese except the holey cheese which I had some seconds of with some more melon.  It was an excellent melon as it was sweet and juicy.ham, cheese and fish

I also had a wholemeal seeded bagel with 2 small butters.  I gave Harvey half of a half (i.e. one quarter) to go with his poached egg.Toasted wholemeal bagel

Having checked out of our hotel we went to Lara’s student house which we have not seen before.  Now she drives herself up and down each term, we have not been up here for about a year so this was our first visit to her first home.  She lives in a lovely residential area close to the centre of Durham.Outside L's house

I have realised I missed out on taking a picture of her room but here she is in her kitchen.  This is certainly one of the nicest student houses I have ever been in and we really enjoyed meeting her housemates.Lara's kitchen

We walked to the restaurant for lunch.  Durham has such hilly streets.Steep Durham streets

This was our destination – an Asian restaurant called ‘Fat Buddah’.  None of us had been before but some of Lara’s friends recommended it.Fat Buddah

I had a Thai chicken Tom Yum soup.Thai chicken Tom Tum soup

The food was mediocre but the company was excellent.  Lucy joined us for lunch too so it was great to see her.L,L and H

So after a lovely weekend we had to come home.  I hate saying good-bye but at least this time I could go knowing she lives in a lovely house with such good friends in a central location.

We did stop off at a service station and each bought a sandwich, packet of crisps and a sweet treat.  I had a Bounce protein ball, beef and rocket sandwich and a packet of Wotsits.  So no healthy eating award this weekend and I hope I have not done too much damage to the weight I would have lost on my fast days.  The scales will be the judge of that tomorrow!

I am a Yorkist

What a completely amazing day we had on Saturday in York.  I have been to York twice previously; once in about 1980 so memories are slightly hazy and once when Ascot was being rebuilt so the races decamped to York.  So it was almost as if I was going for the first time.

We woke up in our hotel in Durham to a gloriously sunny day with bright blue skies.  Our room overlooked the river and we watched many boatloads of rowers, being encouraged by their coach on a bicycle.

Lara walked round to meet us and we headed down to breakfast :-).  I had fasted on Friday and was very hungry.  I started with mixed berry compot, fresh strawberries, muesli and natural yogurt.

Followed by bacon, a poached egg, a sausage, sauteed potatoes, ketchup and mustard.  That definitely filled a very large hole!cooked breakfast 2-3-13

York was so much more beautiful than we expected. We had to drive through this amazing structure to get to the City centre.  It looks like something in a Disney movie!Approach in to York

Top tip to anyone visiting York for the day – park in the long stay car park at the train station!  There were lots of spaces and at £6 for the day, it was MUCH cheaper than other  City centre car parks.York train station

Like many places in Britain, York has an ancient history.  The wonderful thing about York is that so much of it is still intact, such as these city walls which you can walk along.

As I am on eat what I like day, I had a latte and a “Snickers” brownie which was a moist and chewy brownie with the added bonus of peanuts and caramel.  A decadent and delicious treat.Snickers Brownie and latte

We eventually managed to tear ourselves away from such a little spot of paradise and walked in to York.  First stop was the extraordinary York Minster.Approaching York Minster

Fasting Again

I am so proud of myself today.  I managed another fast day.  This was my third.  I began with a large black coffee.

Black Americano

My strategy today was nothing for breakfast then use all 500 calories in one lunch at pod.  I was favouring Thai red curry. However, I was in a meeting in the office at Borough for the afternoon so I went early and met Zoe R. for a wander round the market.  Because I was unsure about calculating calories for anything here, I ate nothing.  We found this lovely flower stall in the newly opened part of the market.  Isn’t that pretty? The Gated Garden

Zoe R. had never had a wheatgrass shot before – she has now!wheatgrass juicer 2

We were given as a free sample a shot of ginger too.  It was amazing.  Freshly juiced ginger with some apple juice.  It was fantastic.  These little cups are really tiny.wheatgrass and ginger

No time for supper at home as we were heading off on a journey!  So I calculated the calories of 3 tangerines and 50 g mixed raw and unsalted nuts.Tangerines and nuts

Popped them in a bag and off we went.  Not much for a day’s food but it was enough and rather enjoyable, slowly munching them as we drove along.Today's tucker

Some Sugar and Salt in the Equation

I adjusted My Fitness Pal settings today to include sugar and salt so I can track them too. I don’t think I eat too much salt but it is good to check.  I definitely eat too much sugar so I am looking forward to tracking that.

In to pod again for breakfast and today I chose a small pot of porridge with blueberry curd and pistachios.  It was really enjoyable.

I walked round to the Whitecross Street market today and bought a pulled pork burrito.  These burritos are so delicious I could eat them every week.  This one had pork, rice, black beans, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream and a mild chilli sauce.  Meals like these are hard to estimate but I looked through MFP and chose the closest burrito that matched.

I worked late tonight and didn’t get home until 9pm so supper was very simple.  The last packet of oatcakes in the box, 1 large tomato, 1 avocado and a lime.oatcakes and veg

My Fitness Pal

Some of my friends use http://www.myfitnesspal.com to track what they eat and how  much they exercise.  I decided to try it today.  If you track Weight Watchers points it does work and help you lose weight.  But I want to be aware of all the calories I eat.  With WW, too many foods are classified as having zero points when actually they have calories and they obviously add up.  Especially when you eat quite a lot of fruit and vegetables like I do.  So I am trying calorie counting and My Fitness Pal is an easy and free way to track them.

I have enjoyed my day tracking what I ate and drank.  Besides the food and drink I consumed here, I also ate a tangerine and drank water :-).  Another healthy day.

Even better, I under-ate by 300 calories today.  I set it up so I would lose 1 pound a week but I ate less than my daily allowance so hopefully I will lose a bit more this week.  My daily total is higher than you may expect because I earned 220 by walking.

Eat What I Like Day

According to the Fast Diet, I could eat what I wanted today.  I was really, really hungry and looking forward to breakfast.  I did want a toasted cheese sandwich but instead went to pod and ordered a Flat White and a Power Smoothie which is made with banana, berries, soya milk, apple juice and muesli, all blended together with ice.

I went to the Turkish stall for a wrap.  They were giving away samples of the Turkish beef sausage and halloumi wrap which was good so I had one of those, with lots of salad.

They are very substantial and I would have been satiated eating something smaller but I seemed unable to throw some of it away.

I managed to resist cake and chocolate this afternoon so I was pleased with that.  I had a very healthy supper.

Now I am having some Natural yogurt with nuts and honey.  Lots of healthy and tasty food.  Breakfast and lunch were very high calorie but apparently that is OK after a fast day.  The scales will tell next week.

Just Words

Today was the second of my restricted eating days i.e. eating only 500 calories.  Having read more about the science behind the Fast Diet (aka 5:2 diet), it seemed best to fast all day and have my 500 calories for supper.  I was aiming for 24 hours without food to give my body the best chance of getting in to an unfed state so it burnt more fat.  I ate supper last night at 7pm so I was aiming to wait until 7 pm tonight before eating anything.

It was incredibly easy.  Yes, truly it was.  I got to work at 8 am and knew I only had to go 11 hours without food but with unlimited black teas and coffees. I also only had to get through today on restricted calories as I can eat what I want tomorrow.

I had 2 black coffees and several herbal teas throughout the day.  I was really busy at work and found time flew by.  In fact, I even forgot I had not eaten until I sat on the train home.  I was very hungry at lunch time but I was stuck on a conference call and couldn’t even go and get another hot drink.   The hunger pangs went!  I thought they may get worse but they didn’t.  They just disappeared.

It is now nearly 9 pm, I have not eaten any supper and I still do not feel hungry so I am not going to eat anything.  I have had another herbal tea and that will do for the day.  Zero calories.  Zero photos too as I haven’t eaten anything.

Some really good news – I made it to Weight Watchers tonight for the first time in a month and I have lost 9 pounds 🙂 So all that denial during my 16 vegan days and now fasting is working.  I am really pleased as I have had some dreadful binge days in the last 5 weeks but overall, I have lost 9 pounds.  So I am really happy.  And really looking forward to breakfast tomorrow.

Slow Cooking

I was definitely not going to have any sugar today and definitely no refined carbohydrates.  So for breakfast we went for eggs with kale and a frankfurter.  I had breakfast with Harvey and he ate the same as me.  I am really pleased with his eating as he usually eats what I eat which is good going for a 10 year old.  What a glowing picture of health he is 🙂

blue tongued critter

I had one and a half eggs, 2 handfuls of kale and a frankfurter with some pepper sauce on top.  I ate breakfast late and was intending to eat nothing else until supper time which I planned to have ready for 6pm.kale, eggs and frankfurter

I had supper bubbling away in the slow cooker before breakfast.  I used a recipe from this book which James bought me for Valentines Day.The Slow Cook Book

The actual recipe was for pork with red cabbage, pears and ginger.  I didn’t quite have those ingredients though so I adapted the recipe slightly.

Pork with Red Cabbage and Apples

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, peeled and sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
  • 1/2 tsp caraway seeds
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 4 pork chops with all visible fat cut off
  • 1 tbsp flour, seasoned with salt and pepper
  • 1/2 red cabbage, cored and shredded
  • 250ml white wine
  • 300ml hot vegetable stock
  • 3 apples, cored and quartered
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Heat oil in a large flameproof casserole over a medium heat
  2. Add the onion and cook fro 3-4 minutes
  3. Add the garlic, caraway, paprika, lemon zest and thyme and cook for a minute more
  4. Coat the pork chops in the seasoned flour and add to the casserole.  Turn to coat, increase the heat and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side
  5. Add the cabbage, increase the heat and add the wine
  6. When the wine gets to boiling point transfer everything to the slow cooker
  7. Add the stock and the apples
  8. Cook on low for 8 hours

add red cabbage pork chop, red cabbage and onions Apples on board apples on pork and cabbage

While the pork was slowly cooking I met Annette for a dog walk over the road.  It was horrible outside today – very cold and threatening to rain and/or snow.  Left to myself I would only have given the dogs a quick walk in such weather but luckily Annette is not as wimpy as me so we managed a good walk.

I was then going to head home and continue with my chores.  I was definitely NOT going to eat cake.  However, Annette had barely begun to ask if I wanted a cup of tea and a piece of cake and I was there.  Settled in to the sofa while her lovely son Josh iced the cake he had made.

I really am so hopeless.  I didn’t even offer up the slightest hint of resistance.  I heard the word cake and I was on my way, practically bulldozing the door down to get at it.  It was lovely and I enjoyed sitting in their cosy sitting room, with a wood burner making it all toasty.  That was particularly welcome as we had a power failure in the part of the house with the boiler so we had no heating or hot water.  Luckily that is now fixed.

For supper we had the pork with red cabbage and it was good.  The pork came from pigs reared at Harvey’s school farm so that ticks the eat locally box and the slow cooking meant it fell off the bone.  The flavour was good.  The sauce was disappointingly watery so I didn’t use it!  I served it with a baked sweet potato and steamed green beans, Brussel sprouts and broccoli.  With butter.

Home Cooking

Despite eating a very restricted diet yesterday, I was not at at all hungry when I woke up. I was still  feeling pleased with myself and wanted to eat healthily, despite being allowed to eat anything.

Last night I had prepared breakfast.  In one bowl I soaked almonds, pumpkin, flax, sesame and blue poppy seeds in water.

In another bowl I soaked raw buckwheat groatsbuckwheat in seive

This may look like red wine but it is sour cherry juice.orange and cherry juice

Overnight Buckwheat with Nuts, Seeds and Fruit

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 1/2 cup of raw buckwheat groats
  • 1/2 cup of mixed nuts and seeds
  • 200 ml sour cherry juice (or other fruit juice)
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1 mango
  • 1/2 cup blueberries

Method

  1. Soak the buckwheats in a bowl, with at least twice their volume of water, overnight
  2. Soak the nuts and seeds in a separate bowl with water overnight
  3. In the morning, rinse the buckwheat, nuts and seeds and place in blender
  4. Add orange and fruit juice
  5. Blend until smooth
  6. Pour in to a tall glass and top with fresh fruit ( I used mango and blueberries but any will do)

This was the perfect way to break a fast.  It was light, flavourful, filling and delicious.  The best part of all was that it was full of a wide range of macro and micro nutrients so as you ate it, you knew every yummy mouthful was going to do you good.

The eating went downhill from then though.

We were all very surprised and excited to receive a package containing three presents, one each, from Lara.3 presents

On a recent trip, our dear daughter had bought us all a little souvenir.  You will never guess which country she visited 🙂

Mine was the fudge and my gorgeous girl knows me far too well.  I love fudge and this was perfect.  It has to be crunchy, not soft and not chewy.  It was so amazing I ate it in one go with a lovely cup of tea.  Once I start something sweet, I just can’t stop!Scottish treats

We went to Dad’s for lunch and he cooked for us.  I was so touched as he finds cooking harder these days.  For most of my life, Dad has done the majority of the cooking at home but in recent years, various health problems have made cooking difficult for him so he usually prefers to take us out somewhere.  I never mind what we have as I go to visit him to spend time with him and do not mind what we eat.  Cheese and biscuits would be fine.  But it was really lovely that he cooked for us today as I wasn’t sure if I would ever have a home cooked meal again so it was a real pleasure.  We had bangers and mash with onions.  Really good quality sausages, full of meat rather then fat and bread and delicious.  The mashed potato was a bad choice for me as it has a very high GI but I was already on a sugar roller coaster so I went with it and enjoyed it.Bangers and mash

As if I hadn’t eaten enough sugar for the day, after lunch we went to Michelle’s for a cake and fizz party to celebrate her birthday.  What a feast she had prepared.

What a delightful afternoon we had.  Sally and Lucy were there too as well as other of Michelle’s close friends and family.  I ate far too much of everything but it was hard not to.  I think it is a nurturing and lovely thing to invite people to your home and to cook for them.  It is a treat to be taken out for a meal too but I am always most grateful to the friend or family member, who takes the time to think about, plan, shop and cook for me.  Thank you Michelle and Dad for today.  It may not have helped me lose any weight but it sure did make me feel loved.  As did my gift from Edinburgh – thank you Lara.  My body may not have been well nourished today but my soul definitely was.
