A Long and Leisurely Sunday

It was lovely to wake up this morning knowing I had nothing in the diary so nothing to rush about for which made a very pleasant change.

I started the day with a hot water with apple cider vinegar and honey.  Aunty Hilary and Miranda had said on Wednesday that they have this at the beginning of every day.honey, vinegar and water There are many reported health benefits of drinking vinegar and even the bottle claims it makes an ‘invigorating  tonic’.  It didn’t taste bad but I think it is an acquired taste.apple cider tonic We were planning a late lunch so I made us all a more substantial breakfast than usual with home grown potatoes, ham and a poached egg.ham egg and potato For our main meal, everything except the meat was from the garden.potatoes and apples We had roast belly of pork.roast pork belly With trombetti and carrots.garden veggies The potatoes did not make great roasting potatoes which is a shame because they are lovely boiled.roast pork dinner 11-10-14 The pork was not as tender as I was hoping for either so that was disappointing.  The apple sauce and vegetables were good.roast pork 11-10-14 The chocolate pudding with a little of Harvey’s crumble and cream was delicious but not very diet friendly.  Neither was the fudge or piece of cake I had after our walk!choc pudding and crumbleOn the plus side I did go on a decent walk today.  We walked from Sissinghurst Village through fields and woods to the castle and lakes and back again.

Not the healthiest day’s eating, definitely not enough fruits and vegetables and too much sugar.  It was a lovely relaxing day though.

Apple Time

The Little Fella and I were in Cranbrook early this morning for haircuts and there was an apple fair on.  Unfortunately my camera was out of juice so no photos.  Back at home we had some fresh juice.  Harvey opted for apple and ginger.  Three apples and some ginger produced a pretty pink juice.

I went for a juice with more vegetables; carrot, kale, sugar snap peas, spinach, ginger, orange and apple.

It tasted pretty good

At lunch time I made a vegetable Korma with onion, runner beans, carrots, cauliflower and sweet potato.  It was such a simple recipe.  I fried the onion, added 1 heaped tsp curry powder, fried for another couple of minutes then added the vegetables and two tins of coconut milk.  After about 10 – 15 minutes it was ready!

4 vegetables chopped

This was so quick and easy.  It was a Sarah Raven recipe and I served it with some red chilli and a little salt.

After tasting it I also added some sweet chilli sauce and it was delicious.  I had two bowlfuls with brown basmati rice.

For dinner I made something different.  I had seen an Ottolenghi recipe for a lamb dish with a tomato, pomegranate and red onion salad served with hummous or Tahini.  I couldn’t find the recipe so I looked various recipes up on line and had a go.

I ground up 1 heaped tsp cumin and coriander seeds with black peppercorns in the pestle and mortar.

spices in mortar with pestle

I added the spices to a bowl with oil and fresh garlic.

Placed the lamb steaks in to marinate for an hour or so.lamb steaks

While they marinated I made a cheeky cocktail with 50 ml gin, 20 ml syrup and the juice of a lime.  It was good!

I made a salad with cherry tomatoes, red opinion, cucumber, pomegranate and fresh mint.

Served with the lamb and a huge dollop of humous.  It was very tasty.  The lamb tasted really good and went particularly well with the garlicky humous and sweet pomegranate. lamb, tomatoes, humous

So not a bad day of eating today.  I didn’t do any exercise though and tomorrow I definitely need to go on a decent walk.

So not

What A Week !

This has been quite a week.  One reason for no blogging is that my hard drive was full so I couldn’t upload any photos and another is because I was too busy to sort the hard drive out and then blog.  Instead of trying to catch up with everything, I will just share with you the most significant events.

I was very sad to attend the funeral on Wednesday of Uncle Brian.  Technically Brian is my cousin once removed as he was my Mother’s cousin.  He was my Mother’s favourite cousin and as such she made a lot of effort to see him and his lovely wife Marion and consequently we have enjoyed many family get togethers over the years.

This was Brian and Marion with Katie at a bowling alley near Whitstable where we celebrated my other Aunty Marion’s 70th last year.M, B and K bowling Katie invited us all back to hers for lunch!Brian and Marion at Aunty M's 70th

Brian and Marion were happily married for 60 years so our hearts go out to Marion, having to adjust to life with just memories of him.Marion and Brian 2 Most recently we saw Brian this summer at the birthday celebrations of my Uncle and Aunty in Lyme Regis.Brian 2 I am so glad we had that time together in August because that is how I will remember Brian. He was very sociable, he had a lovely sense of humour and enjoyed being with everyone, young and old.  We all enjoyed being with him too and will miss him and his lovely twinkly eyes and quiet and intelligent humour very much.

Brian 1After all the sadness of the funeral service,  I went with my immediate family to Bere Farm near the village Lytchett Matravers in Dorset.  We had lunch at The Barn Cafe.  I had a toasted Brie and cranberry panini which was not a good diet choice but I did enjoy it.

brie and cranberryIt was pointed out to us during the funeral service, that Brian would not have wanted anyone to be sad.  Well, we were all very sad during the service but Brian would have enjoyed our lunch which was much more jolly.

I bought some lavender which I have since planted at home and will remember Brian by, each year when it flowers.

A much happier occasion this week was sharing Sally’s birthday present with her last Sunday.

We met up at The Delaunay on Aldwych for breakfast.  I started with a flat white and then enjoyed pancakes with maple syrup and bacon which were good but not as good as the ones we make at home.Flat White Delaunay Their cake display was very pretty but it was too early for cake.cake display Delaunay Apparently it was also too early for champagne!  We had bought Sally tickets for the ballet at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.  We were going to see Manon.  The performance began at 12:00 so we were there at 11:15 and fancied a glass of bubbles first but they do not serve alcohol until Midday.  Denied our fizz we explored the ROH instead.champagne please This is a mirrored wall with a glimpse in to the bar above.mirror in glass room This spectacular glass wall is the view reflected in the previous picture.  It was a bright and sunny day which showed this building off in all its glory.glass room ROH 2 It is absolutely stunning.Glass room ROH 1Upstairs is an open sided balcony which was lovely in the sunshine.balconey at ROHFrom there you can look down over Covent Garden.view from ROH 2 view from ROH 1Time for the ballet to begin 🙂 We had great seats.Inside the ROH ROH ceiling The ballet was beautiful and it was in three acts so during the first interval we enjoyed our champagne.

The only sad part of our lovely day was that Michelle was ill and unable to come.  We did miss you Michelle but we had a very lovely stand in and I enjoyed sharing our special day with Lara.Lara at ROH with chapmers After the ballet we wandered outside in to Covent Garden.suspended building in Covent Garden 2 This suspended building has been receiving a lot of publicity recently so it was interesting to see it.suspended building Covent GardenI had a pizza for lunch at Rosso Pommodorro on Monmouth Street and ended the day with a glass of wine and a good chat at Scoff and Banter.  I enjoy celebrating friend’s birthdays and this was a particularly good celebration!  With particularly good friends.
RP pizzaToday I worked from home.  I had caught up with some of the local lovely ladies in our village pub last night where we gathered for wine and pizza.  It was good to catch up with them.

I would not have won any healthy eating or drinking awards this week so I made an effort today.  I began with a juice made from kale, cucumber, sugar snap peas, lime, orange and an apple.
juice 10 10 14 I found this sachet in the cupboard and stirred it in to the juice as I think every vitamin and mineral counts when you are feeling run down and exhausted!Nutrimoniu I was peckish late morning but in meetings so I grabbed a quick snack of cashews, pecans, coconut flakes and dates.dates and nuts and coconut When I had time I cooked up some of my lovely home grown potatoes with stir fried onions, leeks, broccoli and pork.  Very tasty.pork stir fry 10 10 14 Supper was a blackberry and banana smoothie with various super foods blended in with them.  Made just before the storms began when the power was on and off for several hours so we hunkered down on the sofa with candles to avoid complete darkness and watched tv when it was available.  It proved to be a good opportunity to clear down some of the pictures and documents clogging up my hard drive.

So this was quite the week.  Very happy and very sad.  I saw many of my favourite family and friends and visited some special places too.  I do hope next week is a bit more ordinary though.

Pride

I was feeling very proud of my eating efforts today until I went to the cinema to see ‘Pride’.  What an utterly brilliant film; gay rights, striking miners, Thatcher’s Britain, 1980’s music and themes of community, comradeship, tolerance and acceptance (or not!).  Comedy moments and really sad bits too.  Go and see it if you can.  I went with Lara and she made me have a bag of mints, she really did!  It was interesting going with her as the film is set in 1985 and I was her age when the events in the film took place.  I was quite an active demonstrator in my youth and participated in quite a few marches and attended many benefit gigs in London and around the country.  I doubt many of today’s youth in this country demonstrate like we used to.

So apart from the bag of mints, this is what I had today.

Mug of lime juice in water to start with.lime water 4-10-14 A kale smoothie for breakfast.kale for breakfast Made palatable with lots of freshly picked raspberries from the garden.kale and raspberries Blended with 2 frozen bananas and some coconut water then topped with pomegranate and coconut flakes.kale smoothie with pomegranates Rather pleasant.kale smoothie More kale for lunch, this time fried with onion and mushrooms and served with a parmesan cheese omelette.parmesan and eggs It was earthy and woody and cheesy, which was a good thing.  I really enjoyed this quick and easy lunch.parmesan omelette I may not be a good tomato farmer but I am doing really well with the potatoes.  Look at these beauties!home grown potatoes

Eaten with butter and some Salad Cream plus black beans, carrots, red pepper, tomatoes, sugar snap peas and cucumber.

So I was really good until the sweets. I want to see that film again and play some of those 1980’s hits from the likes of Bronski Beat and Frankie Goes To Hollywood.  What an era!

An Apple A Day ….

Does an apple a day keep the Doctor away?  Can apples help the battle against obesity?  Well this article in Medical News Today thinks maybe they can.  Having read the article (thank you Elizabeth for posting it) there may be something in it.  I don’t know but twice this week I have had an apple for breakfast and another mid morning and I have gone on to eat really well all day.  I have done well today too after an apple breakfast but on the days when I had a more substantial breakfast, I ate badly.

I shall certainly eat more apples anyway.apple 2-10 I have been hungry today.  I have had an upset stomach the past 2 days but I felt much better today.  I made a green and yellow banana ice-cream.  The green half was made with spinach, spirulina, matcha and co yo coconut yogurt.green bitsThe yellow half was made with mango and apricot, topped with some coconut flakes and goji berries.  It was awesome.
green and yellow smoothie I worked from home today so I foraged for some of my lunch.  Thank goodness I don’t have to make my living as a tomato farmer!  The little red ones continue to split and the bigger ones are not going red!  Fortunately the local shops sell plenty that are red, ripe and juicy.tomatoes in ghouse Luckily the carrots and spring onions are doing much better.carrot and spr on muddy There is so much greenery above the carrot – does anyone know if you can eat carrot tops?  It seems like such a waste putting it on the compost heap.carrot with green top They scrub up really well 🙂carrot and spring onionsWe got loads of potatoes from the garden today.

Counting Calories

I stuck with it again today.  In fact, a small part of me enjoys thinking about what I can have with my calorie allowance for the day.  Using the My Fitness Pal app makes it really easy.

Breakfast was 2 apples again – 90 calories.

3 cups of tea with semi-skimmed milk throughout the day – 69 calories

Lunch was courtesy of Pure again.  A chicken noodle soup was 200 calories.  It tasted good too.

chicken noodle soup 2 I then had a Hockingly good salad.Hockingly good 4 Hockingly good 3 There were a few too many croutons but this is a great salad.Hockingly good 2 Worth every one of the 391 calories.Hockingly good 1 Supper was 578 calories of complete, total and utter loveliness.  1 very large mango (333 g) in a perfect state of sweet juiciness, 2 frozen bananas and 25 g peanut butter.  It had the consistency of a thick custard but the lovely sweet flavour of mango.  Awesome.mango banana smoothie

It’s quite easy, this calorie counting 🙂

My Lil Fitness Pal

Having decided to be more sensible with my eating so I can follow a lifelong and sustainable plan, with no extremes of starving or bingeing, I revisited the ‘My Fitness Pal’ app to track what I am eating.  I put in my weight and how much I want to lose a week and it has told me to consume 1,200 calories a day.  Of those calories, I am trying to eat mainly plant food i.e. fruits and vegetables.  But in theory I can have whatever I like, as long as I don’t go over my total allowance for the day.  If I do, I will have to exercise it all off as it also enables you to track exercise and calories burned.

The girl done good!

I had 2 pink lady apples for breakfast and 2 cups of tea throughout the morning.

At lunch time I popped in to Pure for a salad and I chose the ‘Pure Protein’.Pure Protein ingredient list Lots of green leaves which I covered in the fat free kale dressing the salad came with.lunch 29-9-14 Under the leaves were lots of yummy little nuggets of food such as avocado and turkey.  I enjoyed this salad and it was 422 calories, including the dressing.linch 29-9-14 Another cup of tea and lots of water got me through the afternoon.

Dinner was a rather unusual combination of bits and pieces I found in the fridge or cupboard.  4 new potatoes, 1 corn cob, sugar snap peas, some prawns and salmon with 15g butter. dinner 29-9-14 1 All of this was only 395 calories!dinner 29-9-14

I feel completely sated and have no need of anything else to eat even though I have 364 calories remaining ( I had 224 calories left but when I put in the walking I have done today it gave me an additional 140).  I shall go to bed knowing I have lots of calories left over, feeling very pleased I have behaved today.

What a completely gorgeous Sunday!

It was sunny and so very warm it was hard to believe it’s the end of September.  I spent a lot of time outside this morning, enjoying the late summer sunshine and flowers.dark red dahlias 2809 2 There are still so many flowers blooming away.dark red dahlia summer beds Late summer flowers and autumnal leaves.red creeper Apples in the trees, being enjoyed and plenty more to come.apples in tree Far fewer pears but still some there.pears Bright yellow pops of colour.yellow flowers 28-9 These sprung up and surprised me.purple flower I have never previously been a dahlia fan but they flower prolifically and for many months so I am being persuaded.  I like these ones best and also the pink and dark red ones.dahlia 2 2809 dahlia 1 2809 The cucumbers are doing well, the tomatoes less so and the aubergine is a big and healthy plant but absolutely zero fruit!cucumber, tomatoes and aubergine Carrots are ready for pulling.carots This trombetti is gigantic but I am keeping it going to see how big it will grow.huge trombetti These ones are more manageable and quite delicious.little trombetti Leeks in progress.leeks My little cherub  picked these for me this morning 🙂Harvey's flowers I picked these for us for breakfast.raspberries 28-9 I blended all the raspberries with 2 tbsp peanut butter and then added 4 frozen bananas.raspberries and peanut butter Served with blueberries, mango and a strawberry.  Harvey and I loved these.raspberry banana ice-cream 28-9 The giant sunflower has collapsed so I cut off its huge head for the birds to enjoy the seeds.  I lay a 12 inch ruler against it so you can see the size.sunflower with ruler Lots of seeds for the birds.sunflower close up huge sunflower face on This sunflower is huge and very heavy.huge sunflower head I took my little ones to the george in rye for lunch.  Thank you for the recommendation Jane, it was excellent.reception george in rye Cheers!L and H in george ryeWater and a beer to quench my thirst.drinks at george in rye Crab with a fennel and apple salad to start.crab apple fennel This was so fresh tasting it was fantastic.crab with apple and fennel salad Lara and Harvey both had squid and devoured it before I had time to take the photo.empty squid plate For main I had a very naughty cheeseburger with fries.cheeseburger at georgeIt was good.  Very very good.george cheeseburger This was even more naughty but totally delicious.  It’s the george sundae and it was a delightful concoction made from brownie, chocolate and blackcurrant ice-cream, cream and hazelnuts topped with cherries, laduree, chocolate, cherries and a crunchy sugar thingy.  Very good but oh, so naughty.george sudae

I should then have gone home and fasted for about a week but instead the bad behaviour continued as I tottered over the road to help celebrate Sarah’s birthday.  It had to be done!

Seeking A Sustainable Diet

I don’t think I have ever been away from the blog for so long!   I have been in a bit of a funk and binged on all kinds of garbage.  I definitely shouldn’t watch GBBO as it made me crave doughnuts which I don’t even like but I had to have one or two to make sure!  I put away the chocolates and biscuits my supper party friends gave me in a high cupboard but they kept calling to me so they have now all been eaten.  Then once I get that sweet taste back I can’t seem to stop.

I can follow a restrictive diet.  I can stick to a juice fast or a low calorie diet which makes me feel great and crave plant foods.  But I can’t sustain it.  What I need to do is have a way of eating that will help me lose weight long term.

I had the pleasure of studying nutrition with Hannah Kaye who has since gone home to South Africa where she practices as a nutritionist.  You can see a bit about her on her blog Hannahkaye.  She put a comment on her Facebook this week which resonated with what I have been thinking about this week.  We are all individuals with different genetic make-ups and a diet that works well for one person may not work for another.   “Follow a lifestyle plan that’s right for you – longterm.”  So that is what I need to do, find a way of eating which provides me with the high quality nutritious food I need and enjoy and less, but some of, the other types of food I crave and feel deprived of when I can’t have them.

Besides a LOT of unhealthy and stupid eating choices this week, I have made some good choices too.  Near the office is Neal Street.Neal St with buntingNear this charming building is
warehouse on Neal StLab Organic, another one of the juice bars I have been meaning to try.laborganic I have been a bit put off by the sterile looking nature of the place as it didn’t look welcoming or at all friendly but I went inside today.welcome to the labI selected a green juice from their range and walked back to the office.
inside Laborganic It was good.  Well chilled, which is how I need the green ones in particular to be and just sweet enough to make drinking it a pleasure rather than an endurance.  I will be returning.Hydration juice This was a delicious mango and raspberry banana ice-cream I made.  The bottom half was half a mango which I blended until smooth and then a frozen banana added and blended until smooth.  If you blend the soft fruit first, you don’t need to add any other liquid.  The top half is blended raspberry with another frozen banana blended with it.raspberry and mango nana icecream Topped with chunks of mango and pistachios.  I really like these banana ice-creams.raspberry and mango smoothie I had some odds and ends of the tropical fruit selection left over to use up so made a smoothie with them which was wonderful.  I blended pineapple, papaya and dragonfruit.tropical fruits in blenderwith coconut water, coconut yogurt and almond butter.coconut water coyo It was thick and creamy and coconutty.  Absolutely delicious and super smooth.  It was like drinking a glass of coconut cream.trpoical smoothie I had lots of roast chicken left over from the weekend to use up during the week too.  One not very healthy choice was to have it in a ciabbatta roll.  Yummy though!chicken ciabatta This was a better choice, apart from the huge dollop of mayonnaise.chicken, rocket and tomato saladSo my focus for next week is to eat plenty of plants, fruits and veggies, lean protein, nuts, seeds and small quantities of potato and rice or other wholegrain.  Plus exercise. I definitely need to do so much more exercise.

A Sunday Walk And A Roast

We had a lovely relaxing Sunday today which involved a good walk and ended with a delicious roast.

Fresh fruit for breakfast and I also added a few pistachios.
Breakfast fruit 21-9 I really wanted to do a good walk to day as I find fitting exercise in to the week quite challenging so I needed to compensate for that today.  Earlier in the summer, Harvey and I did a lovely walk around Bodiam Castle so we went with Lara today to repeat the walk.  The walk goes alongside a canal, through the lovely East Sussex countryside.Bodiam walk 21-9 5 Bodiam walk 21-9 4 Bodiam walk 21-9 3 Bodiam walk 21-9 2 Bodiam walk 21-9 1The walk ends at the castle which we didn’t go inside but enjoyed looking at.Bodiam Castle 21-9We had lunch at the National Trust cafe at Bodiam where we sat outside and had a jacket potato.  Mine had cheese and was served with salad.  It was very good.  I do like the National Trust cafes and restaurants.  They are not the cheapest but all our meals were well cooked and the portions were generous.  Harvey declared his potato to be the best he had ever had!

If only I had stopped there I would have been good today.  Unfortunately the remains of the salted caramel ice-cream and box of chocolates left over from Friday proved irresistible.  Fortunately I had 2 little helpers so the portion was modest but still very naughty.  If I don’t manage to behave myself tomorrow, I will juice fast again to get back in the zone.
