Tracking Everything

I worked from home today so I cooked for myself and tracked everything I ate and drank.

Breakfast was 2 eggs cooked with kale and served with Cholula hot pepper sauce.

2 Days and Nights in London

My new regime is going well, despite a busy 2 days being back at work in London by day and out by night.  One of the secrets to success (and saving money !) is to take food to work with me.

On both days I took in breakfast of a banana mashed in to a tupperware pot, mixed in with yogurt, chia seeds, 30 g oats and almond milk then topped with blueberries.  One day I used this yogurt made from coconut milk which was delicious.

I have just noticed it was a month out of date – oops.  It tasted ok though.

Breakfast was eaten at my desk with a cup of tea.Soaked oats with blueberries

Lunch was also eaten at work; tuna in spring water, mixed with mayonnaise and served with lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber.tuna salad at work

I popped out at lunch time for a walk and stopped for a skinny latte.  I am always rushing about and eating/drinking while I work so I decided to stop for half an hour and enjoy the drink.Cafe Nero latte

Later in the afternoon I snacked on some raw veggies I had taken in to work.  These helped me to resist the Baklava a colleague had brought me back from the Turkish cafe.

That was actually me done for the day.  Yes, I ate nothing for the remainder of the day or evening after this snack.  I had 1081 calories which weirdly was exactly the same as the day before!  I met Lucy and Jacintha after work, who I worked with many years ago.  I resisted the wine and stuck to Diet Coke.  It is customary in the City to just go out for drinks and not eat so despite being out with them until 10:30 pm, we had no food.  My drinks were zero calorie so another light day.  Oh yes, I CAN DO IT 🙂Crudites

Deja Vue!  Same breakfast as yesterday.Blueberries on breakfast

Lara and Harvey met me for lunch and we went to Wagamama’s where I had the Pad Thai with chicken and prawns.  Wagamama’s dishes are surprisingly high in calories.  This was nearly 800 calories!Wagamama Pad Thai

I had a miso soup with pickled vegetables too.Wagamama miso

In the evening I was meeting up with my family in Chinatown and I decided to walk there.  If I had gone the most direct route it would have been 2 miles but I went for a bit of a detour.

I walk a lot along the South Bank and decided for a change to cross the Thames on the Millennium Bridge and walk along the North Bank instead.Millennium Bridge

I was meeting them in Chinatown.  No time for supermarket shopping though.Chinese supermarket

Lara chose the restaurant.  It was good.  The service was attentive and polite, the decor was all a bit dark but they had booths to sit in which we all like.  The price was average towards high for this part of town for standard dishes but they also had more expensive dishes (we didn’t have the Wagyu beef or other such delicacies though 🙂 ).

Plum Valley

We shared some duck to start with.  I just had 1 pancake with plum sauce, cucumber,  spring onion and a modest amount of duck.Duck pancake in Plum Valley

All the food was good and the portions were generous. In Plum Valley

I had kung pho chicken, broccoli in oyster sauce and egg fried rice.  I only had one small bowl of rice and a small portion of my chicken and lots of broccoli.  However, I did also have some sweet and sour chicken which I think is probably the best I have ever tasted.  It was cooked with pineapple and pomegranate so the sauce was good but it was the texture that was so amazing.  The batter made them crispy and chewy and they were large enough pieces to contain succulent chicken.  I do sometimes wonder if a chicken has been near the sweet and sour chicken.  So I ended up having 4 pieces and they were quite large.  More the size of goujons than the standard nuggets.  I also ate lots of the peppers and onions.

I didn’t calculate calories and I know I would have a had a high days intake but I did walk a lot and I ate small portions so hopefully not too much damage.Kung Pho and sweet and sour chicken

I did keep off the booze again and stuck to jasmine tea.Jasmine tea Plum

We finished our evening at The Odeon in Leicester Square where we a watched Jack The Giant Slayer in 3D which was really entertaining.  I had no sweets even though the others all had some.  Even James who never eats sweets decided to buy some.  I resisted.Odeon Leicester SquareI am pleased that I have had 2 days at work and 2 nights out and not eaten excessively or consumed anything really bad.  No alcohol, no chips, crisps, sweets, cakes, biscuits or any kind of snacks at all, even though I have been offered them and they have been eaten around me.  I will do this!

Back At It

I have been sooooo gooooood today :-).  I began with a tea with Goji berries, cayenne pepper and lemon juice.  I had it without the maple syrup and it was fine as the Goji berries provide enough sweetness.

My mile (at least) a day was achieved with a walk with my lovely children and the dogs in the woods over the road.  Well, we walk, Lara runs and the dogs get confused.

Harvey was feeling adventurous and wanted to try a new route which he made up as we went along.H and M

It involved more mud and water than our usual route but was beautiful, especially in the sunshine.walking 1-4-13

I was feeling full from yesterday so skipped breakfast but when I went out I did take a nectarine which I ate in the car.nectarine in car

I had an apple later too.pink lady in car

I had a very simple and low calorie late lunch, featuring a Kaffir lime.  Look how much smaller it is to the regular lime!  It is more pungent so a little goes a long way in terms of flavour.2 limes

I mashed a small avocado in with the lime juice, plus salt and then added chopped tomato and fresh coriander.tomatoes and coriander

Served with 2 thin oatcakes.  A delicious and nutritious lunch that was less than 400 calories.

Supper starred vegetables too, as I hope most meals will again from now on.  I stir fried some green and red pepper, tenderstem broccoli and green beans in coconut oil which smells wonderful when it is cooking.veg 1-4-13

I added in 71g left over roast duck from yesterday and added half a sachet of Waitrose’s fragrant Thai stir fry sauce which was lovely.  Served over 50 g of brown basmati rice.Dinner 1-4-13

I have eaten just over 1,000 calories today which is less than I am allowed but I needed a light day after my recent over-eating.  I feel really pleased that I have eaten so healthily and I feel so much better then I did this time yesterday.  I feel alert and full of energy.  Long may it continue!

Easter Eating

Well, it has not been healthy and there has been far too much of it.  So much in fact that I am really looking forward to the very austere diet I am putting myself on from April 1st until I go away at the end of July.

We had a lovely day on Saturday visiting Jeremy and Helen and their boys.  Harvey found some exercise weights which weigh 6kg each.  They felt so heavy and this helped me realise how I can benefit my body by losing a couple of those amounts by the summer, so that is my goal.

Helen and 3 boys

After lunch of sausages, mash and peas, cheesecake and fruit salad, we went for a walk.

Feeding the ducks and swans

Watch out boys – the glove on a stick may get you!glove on a stick

It was lovely being outside and walking round the lake, climbing tree stumps

and even some log balancing.

Harvey on a log

After our walk we had hot cross buns and chocolate Rice Krispie cakes and before we knew it, the wine was open again and the dips were out.

cheeky snacks

We had a spectacular dinner of Middle Eastern dishes.  Grated carrots and celaeriac with cumin seeds, halloumi in a caper dressing, home made kofta’s with yogurt dressing, couscous with roasted vegetables and my favourite was an aubergine dish with juicy tomatoes, feta cheese and creme fraiche.

Jeremy's supper

This is the halloumi with lime and caper vinaigrette.  The recipe was from Delia on-line and you can see it here.   It really was excellent.Halloumi with caper dressing

The char-grilled aubergine with roasted tomatoes and feta recipe was also from Delia on-line or just click hereAubergine dish

Having looked the recipes up I an even more impressed as they look, dare I say it, even better than Delia’s pictures.  They would make a great lunch too and as a bonus they are vegetarian.aubergine dish 2Thank you Jeremy and Helen for such a wonderful day and for such a superb dinner.

On Easter Sunday I didn’t eat much variety but a gazillion calories.  I ate all of my Easter egg which was huge and 2 hot cross buns.  Our day did not go according to plan so we ended up having dinner instead of the lunch we planned.  Roast duck with roast potatoes, steamed leeks and carrots and sweetcorn.  Plus gravy and cranberry sauce (in lieu of the redcurrant and port sauce which had run out)

roast duck and veg

James had slow roasted the duck for about 4 hours so it was succulent and tender and just fell off the bone.  The cranberry sauce is one I made for last Christmas i.e. Christmas 2011 and it was fine and I lived to tell the tale.Roast duck and cranberry sauce

This delicious duck was washed down with a very fine bottle of Pinotage then followed by cheese and biscuits in front of the telly – we watched part 1 of Labyrinth.

I have put weight on the last couple of weeks and eaten too much and eaten unhealthy food.  I feel grotty because of it.  So from today, I am going to follow a very strict regime.  You can read about it in the next post 🙂

Leaving

A bit of a sad day yesterday.  My last day with the team I have been working with for the last 2 months.

I will miss the walk over London Bridge I do some mornings when I am earlier than the first Cannon Street train.

ondon ridge

I always enjoy the views from London Bridge and after the recent grey weather, it was a pleasure to see the sun.hazy on LB

I will miss my walks through the City.  Recent work has meant I have visited several different offices during the day and I will miss those walks.  All was quiet outside the Bank of England so early in the morning.Bank of England early morning

I am really struggling with healthy eating at the moment and eating far too much and making poor choices.  Such as this muffin from pod.  It did have seeds in it so was marginally healthier than the chocolate one.  But muffins are full of fat and sugar so never a good choice.  The same applies to flapjacks so never kid yourself!  I also had some sugary yogurts they were giving away as a promotion.pod seeded muffin

The lovely team I work with gave me a card with really kind comments inside which I was very touched by.  Contractors rarely get such things so it was even more appreciated.

Leaving cardI didn’t track all the chocolate I ate in the last day in the office before Easter or my last visit to Whitecross market where today I had 2 cookies and a pork burrito.   I will miss so much about the work I have done recently.  I will not miss being reminded of Christmas every day though.  This advert has been up near the office since February!!!   Actually I really like the advert with its neon flamingo, I just don’t like to think about Christmas all year round.

Electric Flamingo

So this morning I decided to be very healthy and make the greenest of green smoothies.green things for green smoothie

I just had spinach, kale, 2 kiwi fruits, matcha, white chia seeds and coconut water.green stuff

It actually tasted disgusting.  The fact it looked like pond algae didn’t help.  I just thought about the nutrients and got it down.yucky green smoothie

I made a chicken, sweetcorn and leek soup for lunch by making the stock from 2 chicken carcasses which I slowly simmered with carrots and leeks.  I discarded the cooked vegetables and then added sweetcorn and freshly sautéed leeks to the stock.  lunch 29-3-13

It was OK but I forgot to salt it when I cooked it and I should have reduced the stock a bit.Chicken sweetcorn and leek soup

So apart from the white crusty bread, I was doing OK.  But then Lara and Harvey made these chocolate Rice Krispie cakes.  Diet disaster as clearly one is not enough.Easter cakes

For supper tonight we had some Sea Bream I picked up at Cranbrook Fishmongers.Sea Bream filletsInspired by a recipe I saw recently on a blog called Alternative Eating, I wanted to dip the fish in egg and seasoned flour then fry it.  My piece didn’t have much batter on it and I would put more on next time.  it was lovely.  I don’t know if I have had Sea Bream before but it is a bit firmer and tastier than Sea Bass.  We all really enjoyed it.

Fish and potatoesSo my bad eating continues tonight with white wine and ice cream.  Tomorrow we are out for lunch and dinner and then it is Easter.  So I am going to enjoy myself for a couple of days, hopefully not going crazy, and be back on the diet with a vengeance from Monday.

Little Catch Up

Another busy few days with not enough time to blog so here’s a quick catch up.

I spent yesterday in the office near Borough Market and decided to sit and enjoy a Monmouth coffee before getting started with the working day.  I was in the City by 7:30am so I had plenty of time.

Monmouth coffee drining in!

Since the weekend I have continued eating things I shouldn’t, such as this wonderful almond croissant to go with my coffee.  A heavenly but naughty combination.coffee and croissant Monmouth finished

When I was chatting to my lovely nephew at the weekend, he was telling me about the Shakespeare plays his Grandma takes him to and how he prefers the comedies to the tragedies.  I was astonished a 12 year old enjoyed Shakespeare and realised I hadn’t seen a quality play for a long time.  So at lunch time I braved the bitterly cold weather and strolled along beside the Thames.  My goodness it was cold!Freezing cold London

Destination was the Globe which is only a few buildings from my office.  Lara and Harvey are coming up to London so I decided to get some tickets for something.  Unfortunately they don’t open until the 23rd April.  I think Lara considers she had a lucky escape 🙂

Undeterred I kept going to The National but unfortunately there was nothing appropriate   on.  I am quite intrigued by this red structure though – The Shed which is a temporary structure for performances so I will book something up to watch inside. The Shed

I was so cold I really enjoyed the BLT bagel and tomato soup I ate at my desk.BLT Bagel and tomato soup

In the evening I was taken out for drinks by the team I have enjoyed working with so much during the last 2 months.  I chose to go to the bar at the Citizen M hotel on Bankside.  It has a huge bar area with lots of relaxing spaces to sit.  We sat here and had a wonderful evening with lots of laughing. I will miss that team and all the banter.  sofa in Citizen M bar

I started today well with a pod breakfast of eggs with spinach and avocado.pod omega egg

The rest of the day was a disaster in terms of eating which I am going to move swiftly on from.  I had a very light supper of a green smoothie made with spinach, a pear, kiwi fruit, natural yogurt and sour cherry juice.green bits for smoothie

Splendid Seventieth Celebration

What a fabulous weekend!  One of my favourites of all time.  It started well on Friday night as I had my lovely nephew Harry with us for a sleepover and I popped out for a drink with Lucy in the Black Pig.  We then we had 2 days of celebrating a special person’s 70th birthday.

Knowing I had such a food and drink filled weekend ahead of me I decided to start off with a nutritious smoothie starring raspberries and cashews.

Raspberry and cashews

Raspberries, cashews (which I soaked for a couple of hours in water first), coconut water and natural yogurt.  Deelish!raspberry and cashew smoothie

Our destination for Saturday was Whitstable, a lovely fishing town on the North Kent coast.  We were meeting up with everyone at 2:15pm so we booked an early table at the Pearson’s Arms.  The chef is Richard Phillips and Lara used to work at another of his restaurants, Chapel Down, which served lovely food so we were all looking forward to it.

It is right beside the sea which on a sunny day would look lovely.  I still enjoy a sea view, even on a grey day.view from Pearson's Arms

The complimentary olive ciabatta and whipped butter was really good.olive bread and whipped butter

I chose the chicken, gammon and leek pie with potatoes dauphinoise with Kentish blue cheese.  The portions were quite modest which is just as well as both my dishes were very rich.  They were also absolutely superb.  My sister Lucy and her family joined us too and we all enjoyed everything we ate.  It is quite pricey (mains were about £15) but really good so worth the money.pie and potatoes

This weekend was all about celebrating Aunty Marion’s 70th birthday.  Aunty Marion is my Mother’s little sister and a very special and wonderful lady.  She is extremely special to us all.

Here’s the birthday girl, with my sister Lucy.Lucy and Aunty M

Our first destination was Ten Pin Bowling which was a excellent choice of activity because everyone could join in, even the youngest of the group.  There were 50 of us and we ranged in age from 4 to 83.  We were all put in teams of mixed ages and sporting ability and all had a really fun time.bowling 2

It was great looking along the lanes and seeing them all filled with my family.bowling 1

It was quite tricky getting photos in focus because people kept laughing and moving 🙂

Katie and M&B

The next activity was going to be swimming, but much to the relief of all the Mummys and Daddys, the pool was closed to the public.  So we ventured off for walks, relaxing in the hotel or the nearest pub.

Aunty Marion booked us all in to the same hotel and we were all on the same corridor which was extremely sociable.  Children could run up and down the corridor and in and out of each others rooms and no one minded.  Tea parties were hosted and there was endless chatting and laughing.

At 6:45 we all boarded a coach and went to the restaurant for dinner.  It is a very long time since I was on a coach and what fun it was !
on the coach

Aunty Marion had booked Jo Jo’s Restaurant in Tankerton near Whitstable.  Apparently it used to be a supermarket but it is now a really good restaurant.  We had the entire restaurant to ourselves 🙂 Inside Jojo's

We began the evening with a glass of fizz.  Twig’s apple juice for the children.fizz to start

There was no seating plan.  We sorted it out ourselves.  I definitely had the best table :-).  I had the very great pleasure and privilege of eating dinner with my daughter, 3 sisters and female cousins.  The girl's table

The children all sat together which they really enjoyed.  They were fascinated by the magician.Magician with the children

After our mixed mezze starter we had a delicious salad with feta, a grain (possibly quinoa) with veggies and fish goujons which were exceptionally good.  We also had calamari (excellent) and huge plates of slow cooked lamb with roast potatoes (also excellent).  By then the wine and loveliness of the evening had overtaken me and photographing food was the last thing I was thinking about.Dinner 22-3-13

Well, that is until the dessert came out.  A tower of quite possibly the best meringue I have ever had, with cream and berries.  I didn’t get round to the cheese board which is a shame as it looked wonderful too.Meringue tower

After the meal we had some wonderful, loving speeches from Aunty Marion’s eldest, my cousin Bruce.Aunty M and her children

And then another speech from her little brother, my Uncle Clive.  A wonderful and very loving ending to an amazing evening.Uncle C's speech

We all breakfasted together in the hotel.  I started with cereal, fruit and yogurt and then a full English cooked breakfast.cereal 23-3-13

We then headed over to cousin Katie’s for a coffee, brisk walk and lunch.

The children soon found the Wii!  They were amazingly well behaved and good about waiting for their turn.Children in sitting room

The rest of us somehow still had plenty to continue talking and laughing about.

Meeting for coffee

Of all the many relationships we each have, I do think cousins are one of my favourites.  With your cousins, you have that long shared history of having known each other most of your life.  You grow up with each other and get to attend most of life’s special occasions together.  Every time you meet up (apart from funerals) tends to be a happy occasion so your memories of each other are happy ones.  I have 6 cousins and I love being with each and every one of them.

Back at the ranch, so to speak, it was time to eat again.  I really do think I have eaten and drunk non stop all weekend.  So not a healthy weekend but a very uplifting and happy one and I am sure I have laughed away many of those calories.

Cousin Hannah had made many vats of delicious vegetable soup which was served with raw vegetable crudites, guacamole, humous, bread and cheese.Chiclren's lunch first

It was delicious and hit the spot perfectly.Vegetable soup and granary baggette

Of course, every birthday needs a cake and what a cake we had.  Cousin Hannah, pictured here, arranged for this spectacular cake to be made.Aunty's cake

We dimmed the lights the best we could in the bright kitchen and in came the birthday girl for a very enthusiastic and rousing rendition of Happy Birthday, with a great deal of cheering.Birthday cake time for Aunty MI am very lucky to be part of such a large, loving and happy family.  We all enjoy spending time together and we were sad that Sam, Mark, Jack and Chris couldn’t be with us on this occasion.  It was lovely to be joined by Marion and Brian.  Brian is Aunty Marion’s cousin.  He has been married to his Marion for 60 years this summer which is an achievement so many congratulations to you both.

Marion and Brian

Thank you to my cousins for organising and hosting such a splendid celebration.  Thank you to Aunty Marion for inviting us and treating us all to such an amazing weekend.  As a member of my big and beautiful family, all I had to do was turn up and enjoy myself, which I did, very much.

Happy birthday, to my very special Aunty.

Feed a Cold

I was meant to fast today but still feel poorly with my cold, albeit considerably better then Tuesday.  So I decided to eat healthily and go for nutrient dense foods.

Back to work today and my train journey was considerably more enjoyable than usual thanks to the company of one of my lovely neighbours, David.

I took breakfast in with me; 30 g oats, 15 g chia seeds, 135 ml soya milk, and 100g blueberries.  The blueberries were frozen and by the time I sat down to eat my breakfast, they had frozen everything else!  So I had a frozen breakfast today.

Frozen blueberries

A new discovery at lunch time was a Greek (I think) salad and olive bar in the Whitecross Market.  I have walked past it so many times and never stopped because I thought it was a deli.  Several people at work have raved about the salads so I made an effort to find them today.  I am glad I did!salad 5

Believe it or not, this is the small!  PLus a slab of Feta cheese and some coriander olives.Salad 4

This salad was delicious.  The olives were excellent so I shall get some tomorrow as they them separately.Salad 3

This little pot was packed with goodies.  Olives, tomatoes, sundried tomato paste, red cabbage, humous, couscous, lettuce, broad beans, lentils, broccoli, red peppers and carrots.Salad 2

I have probably missed some but it was all excellent.  Fresh and tasty.salad 1

I also bought 2 clementines and some berries to snack on in the afternoon.  I had the clementines but took the berries home.  Unfortunately, during the afternoon tea run a Snickers bar got the better of me 😦berries and clementines

I was home nice and early and was treated to a blackened steak with green beans cooked by my lovely daughter.  I did not eat the fat but I did yum up everything else.Blackened steak and green beans

I then felt it required a red wine but I couldn’t find any so I had a Drambuie on ice.  Then found the wine so I am having that too!  It is all medicinal, you understand 🙂

A Day Off

We had a day off today.  Not due to sickness but a day’s holiday.  I do still feel below par but so much better than I did yesterday.

I had a real fancy for rice for breakfast.  Brown Basmati rice.

I cooked it with eggs and broccoli.  The frankfurters are Harvey’s – not my thing.Breakfast in progress

Stir fried egg with broccoli and cholula hot sauce.  Brown rice and vegetables are so healthy and now I am getting a better appreciation of calories, they are a great way to start the day, if you can stomach it.  I don’t always feel like vegetables for breakfast but I did today.egg fried rice and Cholula

We were going to be out during lunch time so I popped 100g brown basmati rice in to a tupperware pot with some red pepper, cherry tomatoes and lettuce.  A very simple, low calorie and low fat lunch.lunch 20-3-13

We visited 2 pretty towns/villages today.  This is Sutton Valence which is about 15 minutes from us yet we had never been to the village before!

The Sick Room

My cold was so heavy today I was unable to go to work.  This is the first sick day I have taken in about 2 years so I was disappointed but I really couldn’t go in.  I slept for hours until hunger made me go and get some breakfast.

1 slice of toast with almond butter and a cup of tea.

Roasted Vegetables and Goat’s Cheese with Pesto Ciabatta

Ingredients (serves 4) *

3 – 4 medium sized peppers
1 red onion
20 cherry tomatoes
1 tbsp olive oil
2 small ciabatta loaves
190g jar of pesto
200g goat’s cheese (ideally Chèvre Blanc)

* you can also add courgettes but we didn’t have any

Serve and enjoy.goats cheese and veg close upI managed to eat within my calorie allowance today, just.  My method of having what I want as long as I do not over eat worked.  I wouldn’t usually choose so much bread but I was hungry and feeling ill so it was quick and easy.  My Fitness Pal is really helping.  Without it I would have had far more pesto and cheese for supper and butter on my sandwich at lunch time.  Those extras would have made it taste better but my food was very enjoyable without.

I am hoping a hot toddy and an early night will knock this dreadful cold on the head!
