I Ate A Big Mac

I ate a Big Mac today, I really did and it was amazing.

For breakfast I went to Pure and had a small bottle of ‘Get Vit’ smoothie and a portion of porridge with seeds on top.  The Get Vit contains Kiwi, spinach, apple, pear and lime.  It is delicious and is promoted as being banana free so I chose it because it was green and contained spinach and because I hoped it would be low sugar.  It actually contains 4 teaspoons of sugar per small bottle (250ml) so not that low after all!

Calorie count; Get Vit (86) + porridge (277) + Honey (115) + seeds (494).  I am amazed at the calories in the seeds.Pure Get Vit and porridge

I went back to Pure for lunch too because it is close to the office and they sell a great range of salads.   I chose the Big Mack !

Pure Big Mack It was awesome!  I am definitely having that again although it does have a high calorie count – 778 (when eaten with the dressing like I did).  I would have saved 200 calories if I had not eaten the dressing.Big Mack Salad At home for supper I picked 4 types of salad leaves from the garden.leaves from garden Which I ate with roasted vegetables, Feta cheese and some grapes.Dinner 24-6-14

So a healthy day in terms of lots of vegetables and oily fish with no flour products or added sugar.  But surprisingly high in calories.  I should leave out the juice and salad dressing.

Bubbles on a Monday

I went back to Borough Market today.  I was working in the office next to the Anchor and had a lovely seat with a view of St.Paul’s.

office next to Anchor

Some market stalls were open early but most remained shut all day – not much goes on during Mondays.bread in Borough I did enjoy strolling through these such familiar buildings.Borough 23-6-14 Turnips June 2014 I was inspired by the weekend’s walking to be healthier today so I strolled past Monmouth as it only sells cakes and pastries to eat.Monmouth 23-6 Instead I went next door to Konditor & Cook which has had a refurb’ since I was last there.  Apparently they don’t sell the savouries anymore which is a shame as I was thinking of heading there for lunch.  Instead they are focusing on the cakes but I was iron willed and resisted them all.K&C new look I bought a Bircher Muesli instead which had carrots, cashews and raisins in it and was topped with yogurt and some berries.K&C breakfast June 2014 It was very good.breakfast 23-6-14 At lunch time I went out for a walk around the market and really wanted a huge salad.  I wanted something fresh as I was feeling very unwell; tired and lethargic and just bleurgh.  Everything that was open was bready or stodgy which I did not as my stomach was uncomfortable.  There were several greengrocers open but they did not sell a ready made salad.Borough June 20q4 So I decided to sit inside Wagamama’s and I enjoyed a juice made with apple, celery, mint and lime while I selected a salad.green juice wagamama The chicken, mandarin and sesame salad was huge.  It was crunchy, plentiful and quite delicious with an excellent light and flavoursome dressing.  It hit the spot perfectly.wagamama chicken and sesame I would go back for one of these, for sure.Wagamama chicken salad

The afternoon was hot and humid and I felt exhausted when I got home.  I had planned a huge green salad for supper using up some of the bounty from the garden but I was over ruled and we ate out instead.  Her Maj’ chose the Great House in Hawkhurst.

Bubbles on a Monday?Bubbles on a MondayThis is how we roll.
Bubbles at GH Supper was a bit of a disappointment due to cheap dressings and no real butter.  Instead of a standard main (we skipped starters) I ordered the starter portion of chicken caesar salad.  Everything was really good, apart from the dressing which unfortunately smothered the entire meal.  It was a tasteless and glue-like substance which I would rather have not eaten.Great House chicken Caesar I also had a side order of green leaves with blue cheese dressing which was much better than the chicken caesar.Litttle Gem and blue cheese salad Instead of a dessert I had a cheese board which was rather modest.  I did hanker after the spectacular cheese board we enjoyed in The George on Friday night.

I had to ask for butter which was brought along in a charming little dish.  Anyone who knows my complete abhorrence of margarine will understand my disappointment at discovering a pot full of it !!!!  YUCK !!!!  Why would you even serve margarine at all and why put it in a sweet little pot?

The dessert wine was ordered and not served.  That plus the unsightly bucket full of sachets of sauces such as ketchup and brown sauce which was plonked on the table have put me off what was once a very decent local gastro pub.  I don’t think we will be returning here unless we hear it has changed chef or owners.Cheeseboard at Great House

Despite the ghastly dressing and margarine, we had a lovely supper sitting in the pretty garden.

Great House Geraniums

I am enjoying the sunshine but my garden is desperate for some rain.  Please rain overnight.  Not during the day to spoil Wimbledon or people’s plans but a prolonged amount of rain over night would be very welcome.

Midsummer In Alstonefield

What a wonderful weekend we had, celebrating Lucy’s birthday in Alstonefield in the Peak District.  The Peak District is an upland area, mainly in Derbyshire but it also straddles several other counties such as Staffordshire.  It is approximately 150 miles North West of London.

We stayed in the pretty village of Alstonefield where most of the cottages and houses are made of stone.

Royal Ascot 2014

What a fabulous day we all had at Ascot.  This is one of my favourite days of the year and although I had to cut my day short, I did enjoy every minute I was there.

I didn’t have the pleasure of my glamorous daughter’s company this year as she was working at Ascot so I waved her off first thing and then made myself some breakfast.Lara off to Ascot I thought a smoothie would be a good start and made one with natural yogurt, peanut butter, blackberries, blueberries, spinach and some coconut milk.smoothie ings 19-6-14 Very tasty.smoothie 19-6-14 I was given a parking space this year which was a treat but I don’t think my little red car quite fitted in with all the big cars!  Lots of people have a grand picnic out of the back of their car but we were eating inside.Up at Ascot We were in the Royal Enclosure which has a very strict dress code.  All the ladies have to wear a hat or a substantial fascinator – ALL the ladies 🙂Dog with fascinatorHaving arrived I could breathe deep, reeeeeelax and enjoy the day.

I arrived later than my friends who were already in the Seafood restaurant we eat in each year.

So after that amazing day, it will be hard to come up with something that could match it for fun and enjoyment.  Luckily, I believe I have just the thing lined up for tomorrow and the weekend.  I do LOVE this time of year.

I Have Missed You

Hello Blog, I have missed you.  I have been stupidly busy lately and have barely had time to water my plants and definitely no time to blog.  Busy partly with work but also lots of lovely sociable events which have been quite stacked up some days.  So I am not complaining about my busyness but rather offering up an explanation for abandoning my blog.  The next 2 weeks are very busy too but I will blog when I can.

Here’s a quick trot through some of the highlights and a couple of recipes to compensate for my absence.  One is full of goodness and one definitely does not belong on a blog about losing weight but was so delicious I am sharing it with you.

London has enjoyed a week of non stop sunshine.  I have enjoyed too many vists to TimberYard which is lovely but sells too many tempting carb’ heavy foods.
Timbery Yard early Like this delicious toasted ham and Gruyere sandwich.timber yard cheese and hamOne evening this week found us in the Ape and Bird ( http://www.apeandbird.com) with some unlikely company.

I was so good to see them all.Maxwell's burger I have eaten lots of healthy food as well as the unhealthy.  This pile of frozen berries, half an avocado and spinachveg and fruit in white basket plus banana and almond butter made …….smoothie bits this awesome smoothie for breakfast one day.awesome smoothie I had 2 good friends over for supper on Friday night but as I was working all day it needed to be something easy.  I marinaded some chicken breasts and red onions in Rapeseed oil, minced garlic and ginger for the afternoon.oil, ginger and garlic Ready for stir frying it sat on the side all afternoon until evening when  I cooked the chicken and set it asidechicken and red onion while I cooked the veggies.  First of all the veg which required longer cooking time; red pepper, asparagus and broccoli stalks.green and red vegThen the veggies which do not require so long to cook; some pre-roasted butternut squash, avocado and broccoli tops.

It was tasty and no worries about eating a large portion as it was all good and healthy.

I also made a new recipe to have as a starter.  Inspiration came from Hugh’s ‘Veg Everyday!’ book and his recipe for a dish made from chopped mushrooms.chopped mushrooms Cambodian Wedding Day Dip – really tasty and suitable for vegetarians.  It has the consistency of a creamed pate and a lovely flavour.mushroom dip Ingredients (serves 8)

  • 500g chestnut or cup mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoonful oil
  • 1/2 small chilli finely chopped (optional)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 2 tbsp crunchy peanut butter
  • 400ml can coconut milk
  • juice of 1 lime
  • dash of soy sauce
  • coriander to garnish

Method

  1. Finely dice the mushrooms in to 3 – 4 mm pieces ( I used a food processor)
  2. Heat oil in a large frying pan or wok over a high heat
  3. Add the mushrooms and cook briskly, stirring often until the liquid is released and then evaporated
  4. Add the chilli and garlic and cook for another minute
  5. Add the curry powder and peanut butter and mix thoroughly and then add the coconut milk
  6. Let it bubble until thick and reduced, stirring regularly.  Takes about half an hour
  7. Add the lime juice and soy sauce.

You could serve it warm with rice as a main meal or leave to cool to room temperature and serve with raw veggies or crisps as an easy starter with pre dinner drinks.

Muchroom dip and crisps Cheers Judy and Fee, it was so good to see you and also lovely to make the most of the warm evenings and sit outside.Judy and Fee for supper I have done some juicing but not as much as I was doing as it takes so long to chop it, juice it and wash it all up.  This little lot made a lovely fresh very orange coloured juice.  It was a bit sweet but that made it the perfect accompaniment to

Meringue Ice Cream

Ingredients (serves plenty unless they are as greedy as we are )

  • 1 tsp oil
  • 240ml double cream
  • 1 vanilla pod plus 1/2 tsp extract or large tsp extract
  • 4 medium eggs, separated
  • Glug of rum (optional)
  • 120g caster sugar
  • 75g meringues

Method

  1. Start the night before by lightly oiling a loaf tin and line with cling film
  2. Whisk the cream until it thickens and just forms stiff peaks
  3. Split the vanilla pod in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds in to a bowl with the yolks and half the sugar
  4. Clean the whisk and whisk the yolks until light, fluffy and doubled in volume
  5. Clean the whisk again and beat the egg whites until frothy, then add the rest of the sugar and beat on high speed until the whites form stiff peaks
  6. With a large metal spoon, fold the egg yolks in to the cream, then gently fold in a third of the whites
  7. Bash the meringue in to chunks (bash in the bag with a rolling pin) and fold in to the rest of the egg whites and then add the yolk/cream mixture and rum
  8. Pour in to the prepared tin, cover and freeze overnight

I have enjoyed so many other events too but I either forgot my camera or took dreadful pictures so they will remain as happy memories as my recently expanded waistband will testify.

Walking Through Whitehall

This morning was unexpected.  There was a problem with my usual station in London so my train was diverted to a London station I had not been to for many many years; London Victoria.

Victoria StationWhen I lived in Surrey, I regularly came to Victoria so having got over the annoyance of the disruption to my morning commute, I was looking forward to seeing this area of London I once knew so well.  I decided to walk to work.

Unfortunately the rest of the days eating was a disaster but I am not sure why.  It just was so I need to do better tomorrow.  Much better.

Wealden Times Midsummer Fair

Twice a year the Wealden Times hosts a shopping and eating extravaganza and today it was the Midsummer Fair which was located at lovely Hole Park near Benenden.

WTMF entrance I was there early but instead of going straight to the fair I decided to take the opportunity to walk round the gardens of Hole Park.  WTSF from Hole Park The house is privately owned and they open their gardens to the public from 11am.  Visitors to the fair were allowed to look round the gardens so I set off, hoping to miss the rain which threatened.Hole Park House 2 I cam across the veggie patch first.HPG 21Artichokes are architecturally stunning plants but they do take up a lot of space for one small vegetable.HPG 20 Considering the size of the house and grounds, the vegetable garden was very small.HPG 19 HPG 18 This was one of my favourite parts of the garden.HPG 17 HPG16 HPG 15 HPG 14 HPG 13 HPG 12 This was another.HPG 11 HPG 10 HPG 9 As I wandered around I was the only person there which was fantastic.  It gave me plenty of time and peace to appreciate these gardens. Sunshine In A Glass

This morning was excellent.  It was sunny with bright blue skies, I was working from home so I could enjoy the sunshine and I lost 4 pounds.

A Day In Boxes

I realised today that everything I ate and drank came in a box or container!

I really needed a coffee this morning and there is only one place to go for one of those!  Perfect.Monmouth 5-6-14 I then had two mugs of hot water, one with lemon and one with mint.lemon and mint Mid-morning I had a banana berry crunch smoothie which I made first thing at home.  So good.  This is the smoothie I blogged about a few days ago and is made with freshly squeezed apple juice, berries, banana, natural yogurt and some seeds.Berry banana crunch I went for a walk at lunch time to Wholefoods Store at Piccadilly Circus to grab another one of their lovely buffet salads.  Walking back to the office my eye was drawn by the trail of little lights in the pavement and I followed them to see what was in the sunshine.lights in pavement This little courtyard with a very unusual sculpture and a tree with seating underneath.  I was thinking I could go and sit there and enjoy eating lunch in the fresh air.  However, when I got there I saw why no one else was siting there.  Clearly, lots of birds enjoy sitting in that tree!tree and seat So I gave up and returned to work so as usual lunch was eaten in the office.  This was such a yummy salad, eaten out of the recycled cardboard box it came in.  I was feeling very hungry so I had a lot of protein; salmon, tuna mayonnaise, egg mayonnaise, black beans, pecan nuts, seeds and Goat’s cheese.  I know that is a long list but it was only a small spoonful of each one.

lunch 5-6-14 Underneath the protein were lots of veggies which made this an excellent salad.Wholefoods salad 5-6-14When I returned home from London I had about 20 minutes before going out again to collect Harvey so I made a snacky supper to eat in the car; celery with some Camembert, little squares of Gruyere and green grapes.  Eaten from the box in the car.

I am working from home tomorrow so I may manage to be more civilised and perhaps eat from some china!
