The Happiness Jar

Sorry for bragging but my goals of losing weight and gaining health have got off to a cracking start.  I have been fantastic today 🙂

I woke up feeling fresh and enthusiastic about all the good food I had in mind for the days eating.  I started with a green smoothie: 1 small banana, large handful of curly kale, 4 dates, fresh strawberries, half a cup of frozen berries, 250 ml almond milk and 1 tbsp chia seeds for protein and to help me feel full for longer.  Chia seeds swell up and make a huge difference to my satiety.

It turned out rather well and was enjoyed very much.  This used up 7 Weight Watchers points (milk =2, dates = 4 and seeds = 1).

It was very peaceful, still and quiet.  There was practically zero wind and the light and colours were absolutely glorious.M, B and bracken in the bracken

This was one of my favourite walks ever over the road and I was sorry it came to an end.  As a bonus, I earned an extra 4 Weight Watchers points for the walk.

For lunch I made a green and white salad.  Not intentionally, but it ended up that way.Making a white and red salad

Green and White Salad

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • Broccoli, finely sliced
  • Cauliflower, finely sliced
  • Brussel Sprouts, finely sliced
  • Celery, cut in to chunks
  • White button mushrooms, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil (or olive oil)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon

To make the salad, place all the vegetables in a large bowl, add the salt, lemon and oil and mix to combine well.  Add the raisins and serve.White and red salad 2

This was a very tasty and satisfying lunch and used 11 points (raisins = 2, oil = 4 and 143g of ham = 5).White and green salad with ham

 

I kept busy this afternoon. The Christmas tree came down and all the decorations were put away.  I know lots of people wait for Twelfth Night but after NYE I think Christmas is over and want the house cleared up again.

When the chores were all done, 3 boys (and Beryl) stretched out in front of the fire and one ate toasted marshmallows.  The toasting marshmallows did make the house smell heavenly but I managed to resist.Toasting marshmallows

By late afternoon I was peckish so I had a large juicy Naval orange.  It was so good I had another.Juicy orange

 

Dinner was vegetable based again.  I made a lovely orange and purple coleslaw using carrots, red cabbage and red onion with a light coating of mayonnaise.Purple and orange coleslaw

Served with a jacket potato, Cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes and red pepper.  I didn’t have enough points for any butter so went without which was fine as the raw vegetables were juicy enough.  This dinner was 17 points (Cheddar = 5, mayonnaise = 6 and 157 g potato = 6).Dinner 1-1-13

 

 

So what is a Happiness Jar?  It is a lovely idea I got from my friend Lisa.  You find a jar.  I am using this one because it is one of my favourites.  I love the blue glass and the way the colours change as the light changes.  I also like the shape of it and the fact my Dad gave it to me.

Another Year Lived

I can’t believe 2012 has finished already.  Where did that year go?

I know it is customary to eat and drink excessively on December 31st and behave oneself from January 1st.  Customary to start the new year with resolutions and good resolve.  However, I am starting early by returning to Weight Watchers, eating healthy food, focusing on losing weight and adding more exercise to my life.  I am starting today.  This temple has no plans for tonight so is spending the day and evening taking care of itself.  A combination of a poorly husband, a tired son, absent daughter and dreadful weather means any plans I had are just not going to work.  So this year I will celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another quietly.  Healthily.  Calmly.  And tomorrow, smugly, as I will not be hungover 🙂

So how did the re-introduction of the old regime go?  Very well actually.

Mid-morning I snacked on an apple and for lunch I made myself a delicious salad.  I would also like to point out that I heroically cooked American style pancakes with bacon for breakfast and spaghetti bolognese for the children.  I did not have even a spoonful of any of it.

I wanted to call this a South Western Salad or Santa Fe salad.  For some reason the combination of beans, corn, peppers, lime and coriander makes me think of the South West as in the South West of the USA, not Devon and Cornwall.  I was pleased with this salad as it was very tasty and kept me feeling full for a long time.

Salad Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 120 g black beans
  • 1 corn cob, with kernels cut off
  • 2 tbsp coriander
  • 1/2 a red pepper, cubed
  • 1/3 of a red onion, chopped finely
  • 1/2 an avocado, cubed

Prepare ingredients and combine in a large bowl.Black Bean SW salad ingredients

Dressing Ingredients

  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

I kept the dressing very simple.  I just added the dressing ingredients to the salad ingredients and tossed together so it was all well combined.salt, olive oil and lime

We have another visitor for a sleepover.  This one is a little black one that sleeps a lot and snores and snuffles about.

My daily Weight Watchers points are:

3 – 120g black beans
5 – 130 g sweetcorn
4 – avocado
4 – 1 tbsp olive oil
6 – 128g jacket potato (quite a small one)
4 – 20 g butter
6 – 58 g Stilton

My daily total is 32 so I was perfect today.

This evening I plucked up the courage and returned toWeight Watchers for the first time since September.  I knew it would be bad and it was.  I am too ashamed to say how much I have put on – I will tell you when I have lost it again.  I weigh almost exactly the same as I did this time last year.  So I could look at it and think this year has been a waste of time.  But it hasn’t.  I still weigh considerably less than I did 2 years ago and in general my whole family eats a healthier diet.  I know now what made me go off the rails and over eat.  I feel happy for having pin pointed it and will deal with it better next time. So I have more to lose than I wanted to have to lose at this point in the year.  But I am still better than I used to be so there is progress.

I am pleased to have returned to Weight Watchers.  There is a new lady running it, it is a new year and I am excited about the challenges ahead.

Downtime with Downton

Somehow it seems perfectly acceptable at this time of year to spend the afternoon drinking champagne, eating chocolate and watching TV.  Well, it’s acceptable in my house 🙂

I did have a healthier start to the day though with some of this.

This is the delicious muesli I bought yesterday in Lyme Regis.  I would call it granola as it is toasted but they call it muesli.

For lunch we had a little bit of a treat.  I had been supermarket shopping, mainly to stock up with really healthy food for the week ahead.  While in there I took advantage of a sale of Christmas produce – this camembert was only £2.75 and that includes the terracotta dish!  I heated it up so the middle was runny and served it with a wholemeal seeded French loaf.  It was gorgeous.seed baguette and camembert

I also picked up at half price a cooked ham which was very good.  Plus we had smoked salmon, prawn cocktail, dressed crab and a simple salad served with a basic vinaigrette.Seafood and salad

Lara and I then commandeered the Sitting Room to watch the Christmas special of Downton.  I had also saved the series 3 finale which Lara hadn’t seen so we watched that and then the Christmas special.  3 and a half hours of Downton.  What bliss.  It seemed appropriate to enjoy a bottle of champagne at the same time.  What could be better than an afternoon of Downton and champagne?Mumm champagne

Before settling down to watch Downton, I put dinner on.  I made a lamb dish with olives which I found on a site called Frugal Feeding .  You can follow the link to the dish and I may make it again but in the oven or with less water.  I followed the recipe exactly but my sauce was much too watery.  Maybe it is because I cooked it in a slow cooker so none of the liquid evaporated as it does on the hob or in an oven.  Or maybe it was because I couldn’t get neck fillets so used leg steaks.  It was ok, but slightly disappointing.

Merry Christmas 2012

Well we certainly had a very Merry Christmas and I hope you did too.  We started Christmas at home.  Having trashed the place, we went to stay at my sister Holly’s for a couple of days 🙂

They produced a magnificent traditional Christmas lunch of roast turkey, stuffing, bacon wrapped chipolatas, homemade cranberry sauce, brussels, roast parsnips and roast potatoes, red cabbage and bread sauce.  Yummy yum yum.  Followed many hours later by Christmas pudding and endless chocolates and other sweet treats such as Stollen we brought back from Nuremberg.

The plan on Boxing Day was for the rest of the family to join us.  Sadly my sister Abi and her family were ill so couldn’t make it.  We really missed you Abi, Jim, Charlotte, Max and Katie 😦

Despite the fercocious winds and driving rain, we braved the outdoors for a walk beside the sea.  The waves were big and at Jacob’s ladder they had flung loads of pebbles on to the promenade.  I actually love being besides the sea when it is like that.  It is very exciting and invigorating and as long as you wrap up well, not too cold either.Jacob's Ladder

LYME REGIS

For us, no visit to the South West is complete without a visit to Lyme Regis.  And no visit to Lyme Regis is complete without a trip to the amazing bakery, The Mill.  In The Mill you watch the bakers bake and help yourself to whatever they have just made.  You sit communally on long tables, sharing and passing up and down large bowls of butter, sugar and jam.  The decor and furnishings are simple.  You go here for a friendly, convivial and relaxed atmosphere and amazing food.  Really amazing. Inside the Mill Harvey in The Mill

We abandoned our planned walk along the sea front and out on the Cobb due to the rain.  This was a very wet and deserted Lyme Regis but still lovely and we are so pleased we stopped to visit.Wet Lyme Regis

Now we are at home.  I collected the dogs – thank you very much Rebecca and family for looking after them for us – and we are now relaxing at home.  I am confronting my larger than it has been for a while stomach and planning the relaunch of the next phase of losing weight and gaining health.

A Dinner Party

What a wonderfully sociable couple of days I have had.  They have not had much to do with losing weight or being healthy but I have enjoyed myself.  I have had a coffee with Eula, a 2 hour ramble through the woods with Annette and today we had lunch with my Dad.  I had a delicious roast beef with vegetables and Yorkshire at Galu – Mediterranean Restaurant and Grill

I spent a lot of time yesterday cooking as we had 10 friends coming for supper.  I enjoy cooking and one of my favourite ways to spend an evening is chatting with dear friends over a good meal.  I apologise for completely failing to manage to take any photos of completed dishes but I did manage some while I was cooking.

On the menu was:

Seven Layer Dip and hummus with crudites and crisps
Venison Casserole with Potatoes Dauphinoise and German Red Cabbage
White Chocolate Mousse Torte or Chocolate Pecan Pie
Cheese and Biscuits

Some of these dishes have previously been on the blog so you can find the recipes on the ‘Recipe’ page.  Here are the recipes for the casserole, cabbage and white chocolate mousse.

Inspired by this weeks trip to Germany, I looked up a recipe for red cabbage and found this one from Domestic Diva Mysteries.  The recipe called for blackberry wine, which I didn’t have so I used Cassis instead.  I think it worked well and it was similar to the red cabbage we had in Nuremberg which was not overpowered with cinnamon.

Ingredients (serves 12)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (use a light one so there is not a strong olive taste)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 red cabbage, outer leaves and stem discarded
  • 2 apples, peeled with seeds removed
  • 1 cup Cassis
  • 2-3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt

Method

  1. In a large casserole pot, heat the oil and fry the onions slowly until they are translucent.
  2. Finely chop the cabbage and apples and add to the onions with the Cassis and vinegar.
  3. Put the lid on and cook gently for approximately 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  4. When the cabbage has the desired softness, add salt to taste.

I bought the venison for the casserole from V.J.Game at Rolvenden Farmer’s Market (Thursdays 9:30 – 12) and they are also at Beckley and Cranbrook Farmer’s Markets.  It comes diced and has virtually no visible fat so takes very little preparation.  I don’t know the origin of this recipe as it came from a lovely lunch at Lisa’s a few years ago.  It is really good and everyone enjoyed it.  I doubled up the recipe yesterday but I am giving you the recipe as Lisa gave it to me, which serves 6 – 8 people.

Venison Casserole

Ingredients (serves 6-8)

  • 900g venison cut in to 2.5 cm pieces
  • 25 g butter
  • 100 g smoked streaky bacon, cut in to small pieces
  • 350 g shallots, peeled
  • 2 – 3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 50 g plain flour
  • 300ml red wine
  • 600 ml chicken stock
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 head of celery, cut diagonally, reserve the heart and leaves for later
  • 225 g chestnut mushrooms, sliced
  • salt and pepper

Method

 

  1. Using a large frying pan, brown the venison in the butter and spoon in to a large casserole (or slow cooker)
  2. Cook the bacon in the frying pan until the fat begins to run
  3. Add the shallots and garlic and fry for 4-5 minutes
  4. Add the flour, stir well and then blend in the wine and stock
  5. Add the tomato puree, honey, celery, mushrooms and seasoning.  Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes
  6. Pour the sauce over the venison on the casserole (or slow cooker)
  7. If oven baking, cook for 2 hours at 160°.  I used the slow cooker on high for 4 hours then low for 2 hours.
  8. Add the chopped heart of celery for the last 20 minutes to add crunch to the casserole (optional)
  9. Check seasoning and decorate with chopped celery leaves.

I made a dessert which was very easy and absolutely delicious.  Not at all healthy as it is full of cream and sugar but oh my goodness it is amazing so as an occasional treat, eat it and enjoy.  Best of all, it is extremely easy to make.

This recipe comes from my sister-in-law Anne who I think got it from one of the Books For Cooks annual books.  Give yourselves a treat and make this.  Apparently a secret to the success of this is to have the cream and milk at room temperature so take them out of the fridge early enough.

White Chocolate Mousse Torte

Ingredients (serves 12)

  • 200g amaretti biscuits, crushed
  • 100 g butter, melted
  • 350 g white chocolate, broken in to pieces
  • 500 ml double cream at room temperature
  • 4 tbsp milk, at room temperature

Method

  1. Line a 24 cm springform cake tin which has been rubbed with buttered paper.  To do this, cut a strip of baking parchment/greaseproof paper about 75cm long and 9 cm high.  Snip 2 cm cuts at intervals along one edge of the strip.  Use this strip to line the sides of the tin, pressing the snipped edge on to the buttered base of the tin.  Then line the base with a round of baking parchment.
  2. Mix together the amaretti crumbs with the melted butter and press evenly in to the bottom of the tin.
  3. Place in the fridge to chill while you make the topping.
  4. Melt the chocolate, either in a microwave or in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water.  Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  5. Using an electric mixer, whisk the cream with the milk until it is thick enough to leave a ribbon trail when the whisk is lifted out of the bowl.
  6. The cream and melted chocolate should ideally be the same temperature.  Using a large metal spoon, stir a spoonful of the whipped cream in to the chocolate to loosen it.  Then immediately pour the chocolate in to the cream and stir vigorously until the mixture is smooth and mousse like.  Don’t worry of there are little lumps of chocolate.
  7. Pour on to the amaretti base and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours or overnight to set.
  8. To serve, unclip the sides and peel off the paper.  If you have a friend to help, you can peel the paper off the base too but that definitely takes 2 people (thanks Jane).
  9. Cut in to slices and serve.

The food was ready, the table was set and all I needed was some friends.

Feeling Christmassy

We were all sad to be leaving Nuremberg yesterday.  After breakfast in the hotel we spent 2-3 hours wandering around this beautiful old town.  The architecture is so lovely.

We picked up the last few bits we needed in the Christmas Market and then headed up to the main shopping area.Looking towards castle

This cute Christmas wooden statue is more my thing at Christmas time 🙂Wooden statues on buildingWe checked in so quickly at the airport we had loads of time to hang around with not much to do.  This tea display was amazing.  So much choice of different teas and when I asked for a peppermint tea, I was asked if I wanted a tea bag or fresh leaves!  There was an excellent choice of accompaniments too, such as different types of honey and lemon.  I wish some of our high street chains were this good.

Thanks to my careful budgeting, we were left with Euros 9.19.  I walked round the airport and noticed there was no confectionary for sale.  None at all.  People who wonder why childhood obesity is such a problem in this country should perhaps look at countries where levels are lower and so too is the availability of confectionary.  Maybe there is a bit of a connection.  I bought a small stollen which they cut up for us and we enjoyed with tea and coffee.

This morning I started the day with a red berry smoothie made with mixed berries, almond milk and 4 dates.  I should have blitzed it more but I was in a rush as I had to go out.Berry shake

One of many errands today was a visit to the Rolvenden Farmers market.  I haven’t been for months as I am always in London on Thursdays so I really enjoyed a chance to go back.  It doesn’t quite have the air of jollity and Christmas spirit that Nuremberg had though 😦Rolvenden church

Ham salad with sweet potato for lunch.  I made the salad from iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and raw shredded brussel sprouts.  I also had a little piece of Christmas cake with a cuppa. What a treat.Ham, salad and sweet potatoFor supper we went out to the Black Pig, Hawkhurst with Lucy, Emily and Charlie.  I had the belly of pork which was served on smashed potatoes with courgettes, carrots and cabbage.

Instead of dessert in the pub we headed up the road to Lucy’s for mince pies and unfortunately, tea for this driver.  I should have asked Lara to drive :-).  It was a lovely evening and that plus the Christmas Market has made me feel all Christmassy.

Chateaux and Gateaux

Today was all about the castle, eating and shopping.  And eating.  And drinking.

I started today with an apricot juice, granola, yogurt, pumpkin seeds, prunes and fresh fruit in a tiny bowl again.

Followed by rye bread, boiled egg, ham and a small slither of Brie.Bread, cheese and ham

Our destination this morning, despite the pouring rain, was the Kaiserbourg, the castle at the top of the hill.  This is such an attractive town.Square below castle

My chest infection has really taken hold and it gets worse as soon as I go outside and hit the cold and damp air.  I was struggling to get enough air as the walk up to the castle is very steep in places.Tunnel to the castle

The black cars belong to the Bavarian Government who were having a meeting in the castle.  There were lots of Polizei around which Harvey enjoyed.Red rooves and government black cars

We headed back to our hotel to drop off shopping bags and have a relax.  We are staying at the Hotel Agneshof which is in the Medieval part of town where most of the attractions such as the Christmas market are located.  We are less than a 5 minute walk to the market but down a quiet street so the revellers do not disturb us at night.Outside Hotel Agnesshof

We had an incredible dinner tonight.  I rarely say this, as I like variety, but if we were in Nuremberg tomorrow night, and assuming we could get a table, I would have the same again.  It was fabulous and I will be giving the Albrecht Durer Stube a 10/10 on Trip Advisor later.

We tried to get in to this German eaterie, last night but it was busy.  We peeked inside from the street and saw a busy restaurant full of people having a great time.  We wanted to be there too.

We booked a table at 10am today but the restaurant was already booked out from 8pm so we took a table at 6pm.  It happens to be next door to our hotel so it was very easy to get to!

I ordered one of the specials which was goose with roast potatoes and red cabbage.  It was incredible.  Lara had the other special, which was roast duck and that was amazing too.

This goose was perfect.  It must have been slow cooked as the meat was tender, full of flavour and the skin had no visible fat left but was crisp.  The potatoes, cabbage and gravy were wonderful.  I enjoyed every morsel and could have licked the plate, it was that good.Goose close up

For dessert I had a platter which contained a mini (they were very small portions but just right) creme caramel, vanilla ice-cream, creme brûlée, red berry mousse, vanilla mousse and blackberry compote.  It was sprinkled with toasted coconut and was really good.ADS platter

I loved this place and if I ever came again, would book this in advance to be sure of a table.  One wall is covered in certificates and awards, plus they have plenty of seasonal decorations up.ADS' Christmas decsThe other walls are covered in Abrecht Durer’s works (copies I assume) and local images.

Beautiful and Chilling

Today’s post features a visit to the rally grounds of the National Socialist Party.  There is nothing gruesome shown but if you do not want to read about it or see photos, please don’t read today’s post.

The time difference means the mornings are darker longer.  We didn’t sleep longer though 🙂

The hotel laid on an impressive spread.  I had just 2 dsps of granola, plus some pumpkin seeds, prunes and lots of fresh fruit with yogurt.Cereal choices

This is probably the smallest bowl I have ever eaten from.  They are not giant grapes, just a very small bowl.

The cereal would not have kept me full for long so I added a protein course; 2 slices of cheese, 3 types of ham, a Nuremberg Wurst, Frankfurter, boiled egg and 3 types of smoked fish.  Just little tastes of lots of different foods for variety.  I added some more fruit too.Meat and fish at breakfast

There are museums everywhere.  The guidebook listed 41 and some of them are almost tempting to go to as they sound so bizarre such as a hat museum, pigeon museum and a dialysis museum!

Thanks to the very helpful lady at the Tourist Information centre, we successfully boarded the correct bus and arrived at the Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelande or, in English, the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

We visited some of the buildings built by the National Socialists (NS).  The National Socialists are a part of Nuremberg’s relatively recent history.   Nuremberg was the town where the first laws against Jews were published, where the NS party held their main rallies and also where, at the end of the second word war, the main protagonists were tried and then variously hanged, imprisoned or pardoned.

Before looking at the permanent exhibition inside, we walked around the 4 km² grounds, where Albert Speer’s designs that were actually built remain.

Mainly this was a bleak, grey and cold winters day which seemed fitting really to be walking round a place where such an evil man demonstrated his power.  Most of the main parade ground is today unused and falling apart.Side stands decaying

This is not a period of history Harvey has learnt about yet and he is too young to be educated to the horrors of this time.  He was delighted to find some snow and his child appropriate enthusiasm for it helped lighten the mood here.Harvey finds snow

We walked approximately 3 km round the mainly frozen lake.  The cold, damp air made my chest very painful and I found breathing deeply quite impossible.  I feel irritated to be poorly on holiday but I pushed myself to do everything I wanted to do anyway.Ice on the lake

The Documentation Centre is inside the North Wing of the unfinished Congress Hall.  Designed by the National Socialists to accommodate 50,000 people it is now occupied by a permanent exhibition called ‘Fascination and Terror’.Nuremberg Trials Display

It was very affordable at Euros 5.50 for all 3 of us and that includes the audio guide.  The exhibition focuses on the causes, contexts and consequences of the tyranny of the National Socialists.  Since this is in Nuremberg, the exhibition focuses on the rallies and then the trial at the end of the war.Going round the exhibition

It was not very interesting for Harvey but he was really good and allowed us time to wander round the exhibition.  Display of AH

We were all relieved to get out though and to be waiting for our bus back to the Christmas Markets and a more cheerful and happy place.  I am pleased I visited here but I will never return.  It is too grim and ghastly to contemplate what was celebrated here.Nuremberg tram

I did have this almond Lebkuchen.  It was amazing.  Like a cross between a gingerbread and a macaroon it was moist, chewy, lightly spiced and almondy.  Quite incredible.Almond Lebkuchen

After a relax in the hotel, we headed out to a very local German restaurant for dinner.  We ordered a large salad to share.

We all had apple strudel.  I was disappointed as it didn’t seem very traditional to me and was smothered in icing sugar and accompanied by vanilla sauce, ice cream and cream.Appel strudel

The ambiance in this cute little restaurant was lovely.  It was very cosy and welcoming and we had a good meal.Inside the restaurantSo that is a little sample of Nuremberg.  A fascinating place with so much about it that is quite beautiful but a history I find so chilling.  The history of Nuremberg is not celebrated  in any way but neither is it ignored.  It is presented factually which is probably as it should be.  Tomorrow will be more about the present.

London – Zurich – Nuremberg

I didn’t feel worse than I did yesterday which is good.  If I stay like this and even better, actually recover, then my sore throat/chest lurgey will be manageable.  I packed in the nutrients this morning: Udo’s oil, Kale, 1/2 avocado, 1 banana, 1 cup frozen berries, 1 tbsp chia seeds and Goji berries.

James kindly took us to Heathrow.  For those of you who are wondering, James could have come with us to our little trip to Germany.  He has 3 days holiday left this year but instead chose to take them between Christmas and New Years Eve.  We had a panini, juice and coffee at Cafe Nero.

I always admire efficiency and good organisation so I loved the flight and being at Zurich airport.  Everything you need to know is there for you and the transfer was effortless.  We only had about 50 minutes at Zurich airport but it was great.Transfer information

We regretted the mediocre panini at Cafe Nero when we saw this lovely cafeteria called Marche which had several counters full of fresh salads, beautifully prepared fruit and drinks.  We will eat here on the way home.<arche at Zurich airport

Lara and Harvey could not get over a smoking lounge.  The thought of people smoking inside a public building is such an alien concept to them which is so different to the world I grew up in, when we could smoke everywhere; on tube trains, buses, offices.  Anywhere really.  Thank goodness that is no longer the case.Camel smoking lounge

I had a bit of an emotional moment at Zurich airport.  I spent a month staying with my Step-Aunt Ann and her family at Ober Ruti in Zurich many years ago.  Her husband Herman loved the mountains and he used to take me out with 2 of his daughters who were a similar age to me, Susannah and Barbara.  My main memories of that summer were of being in the Alps with these lovely people, climbing mountains and trying to beat the time that was estimated for each climb (Herman’s objective, never mine), plucking up the courage to dive off the 3m board in the open air swimming pool and hearing that Elvis Presley had died!  They lived near the airport because Herman worked for Swiss Air (as they were called then).  I remember that wonderful summer so fondly.  Sadly Herman died a few years later (killed by a hit and run driver in Los Angeles) and Barbara, who was my age and has a son Harvey’s age, died few years ago from a viral illness in Qatar.   I wished I had made time this trip to go and visit Ann, Susannah and the others.  I will arrange it one day though and hopefully be fit enough to climb the Santis, which was the mountain we climbed most often. I would like to climb it in remembrance of Herman and Barbara.

Our next flight was just as easy as the first and we arrived in Nuremberg, and checked in to our hotel which is in the old part of town.  We dropped off our bags and set off in search of Bratwurst and Gluwhein.  I chose Nuremberg because I have wanted to visit a German Christmas Market for a few years.  I subscribe to a monthly magazine about 2 of my great passions in life, Food and Travel, and the December issue had an article about Nuremberg.  It claimed it has one of the best Christmas Markets, plus a fascinating history so here we are.

I had read about the “prune people”.  I wasn’t sure whether to laugh at the silliness of them or whether to admire them.  These little people are made from nuts, dried figs and prunes!Prune people knitting

I can’t wait to see this place in daylight as it looks so charming in the dark.  Even prettier then I had imagined.

Market stallThe Nuremberg Bratwurst is much smaller then the traditional Bratwurst.  According to one tale I read, they were made small enough to be posted through the locks in the prison so people could feed their friends and family if they were locked up.  Adorned with blobs of ketchup and mustard and eaten sandwiched between some lovely chewy bread, these did not disappoint.

Neither did the Gluwhein 🙂 .  You pay a Euro 2.50 deposit and can either keep the mug or take it back for either a refill or a refund.  It beats the plastic cup we would have been served this in at home and keeps litter downGluwhein mugsWe also had some warm sugared nuts and shared a large pretzel.  So none of this was health food but it was all authentic and we enjoyed it.

We are all very pleased with our hotel room.  It is huge and is in the attic so has slopey ceilings and dormer windows i.e. character.  Plus 3 beds; one double and 2 single so plenty of sleeping space.  We are all snuggled up in bed now, watching a German version of ‘You’ve Been Framed’.  Harvey is still going with his activity book 🙂 .  I think this is going to be a fun and interesting 3 days away.
