Wine Tasting

I have not managed a blog for a couple of days.  Last night I was out wine tasting at Vinopolis with some of my colleagues from work.  It was an expensive evening and not good value for money but it was interesting and a fun thing to do with a group of people.

It costs £29 which buys you 12 tokens and a tapas plate.  You start off with a talk and video about wine tasting which some took more seriously than others :-).  This is the lovely Cherry-Ann who was visiting from the Glasgow office and always livens the place up.

CA and the large glass

Inside Vinopolis, which is huge, there is lots of information about growing grapes and making wine.  The Vinopolis staff are knowledgeable and helpful too so you can chat to them about wine.

Vinopolis

There are information boards to read.Dessert Wines

Wine is grouped in to types and maintained at optimum temperature.  The wines have different prices/token values, mainly between 1 and 4.  So you can choose how to “spend” your 12 tokens.  I wanted to drive home from the station so I decided to be extravagant and mainly tasted expensive wines so I drank less.  By drinking vintage champagne, my glasses of fizz cost me 4 points so I only had 3 glasses.  Each glass was only 25 ml so no worries about being over the limit.

Wine dispensers

I enjoy dessert wines and this one was particularly good.  One advantage of my blog is that I can just look it up when I want to go and buy a bottle.

Sauternes tasting notes

Having swirled, slurped and enjoyed some interesting wines we adjourned to the tapas area.  Hi Cherry-Ann 🙂 .   The tapas was disappointing as it was really just a plate of fatty meat and some bread.  It was only enough to have been a starter in a restaurant so 10 of us headed out for a curry as we were all hungry.  So not a good eating evening but great fun.Cherry Ann with ham

Another reason I have not managed to blog this week is because I have a new job in a new office with new people so I have been coming home tired.  I still work for the same company but on a new project which is exciting.  I enjoy change and newness but it takes more effort so is always tiring to start with.

There is an EAT near by so I started in there today with a skinny latte and mixed berries, yogurt and granola.EAT breakfast

One good thing about a new office is a new area to explore.  I am North of the City near the Barbican.  It is much more residential round here then I am used to.Street near Barbican

Round the corner from the office is a market.  I was trying to not be too despondent that I was not pottering round Borough Market.Market near office

I bought lunch here at a Turkish stall.  You choose from a range of flat breads.Turkish breads

The one I chose was folded in half and stuffed with spinach which was then warmed on a hot plate.warming the wrap

It was then filled with lettuce, tomatoes, sweetcorn, saurkraut and Halloumi.  It was absolutely delicious.haloumi wrap

This interesting looking pub is opposite the office so I hope to have a chance to sample some of their wine soon. The Jugged Hare

I got home at 8:30 pm tonight and was still full from that huge wrap at lunch time so I made a very simple smoothie of banana, mixed berries and soya milk.

It was thick and pink and delicious.  thick pink smoothie

Not as enjoyable as the wine I had last night but certainly healthier.

21 Years Ago Today

21 years ago today I looked like this!  Soon after this picture was taken I was in hospital becoming a Mother for the first time.

Very pregnant Zoe

Many hours later, during which time I nearly died,  (I needed an emergency caesarean but I had an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic which brought on a massive asthma attack) I was able to focus on my lovely baby.  Our first visitor was my sister Lucy.  That hospital looks like something from a war zone!

I always feel emotional on my children’s birthdays and today was no exception.  I find it hard not being with them on their special day but I can’t complain today as I had all weekend with Lara.

I started the day as I meant to go on, with a healthy breakfast.  Porridge made with soya milk, with chia seeds, a banana and 1 tbsp almond nut butter.

hearty porridge

It is snowy outside!!!  I couldn’t get to work as Harvey’s school was closed until 9:30 am and there was no one to take him.  My car is not good enough in the snow to tackle the long and winding icy lane that leads to his school and the near neighbour who often helps at such times was not going anywhere as the school her eldest 2 attend was closed for the day.  So I worked from home.  Apart from a walk around the garden and some energy expended clearing the drive a little bit, I didn’t go anywhere or do anything.snow scene 6 snow scene 5 snow scene 4 snow scene 3 snow scene 2 snow scene 1

Lunch was easy – party leftovers of salmon, potato salad, noodle and mango salad and tomatoes.party leftovers

It would be very hard to decide today, which of my gorgeous children was my favourite.  Was it my little boy,  who amused himself for hours at a time so I could focus on my work?  He is seen here drinking a cup of tea I made him because I was concerned he may have frozen to the spot as he was in the garden for so long on his own.  He had grand plans to build a fortress.H drinking tea

I suspect this will be as big as it gets though as the snow may start to melt tomorrow 🙂back of the bunker

Or is my favourite child of the day the gorgeous girl who sent me this beautiful bouquet of flowers as a thank you for spoiling her so much over the weekend.  Which also came with chocolates which I ate during a lull in the afternoon.  I can’t decide – as we all know, Mummys don’t have favourites.  Thank you Lara, they are wonderful and you are very naughty to spend the money you don’t have anyway on me.flowers from Lara

I didn’t finish working until gone 7 so supper was a tasty but rushed affair.  Some stir fried onions, broccoli and tomatoes, onion, brocoli and tomato

Twenty One At The Wolseley

Part 2 of Lara’s birthday celebrations found us on a train to London before 10 am this morning.  Are you eating a burger?

Lara on train

Nope.  Some birthday cake 🙂  We all had a bite and that was breakfast.Lara's chocolate cake

We arrived at The Wolseley which Lara chose for her family lunch as it is one of her favourite restaurants.  We met BJ and Helen there as they were unable to come yesterday.

This is a lovely building to sit in and we were on one of the balconies.

The 4 of us

This gave us a lovely view over the whole restaurant.

We hadn’t ordered a birthday cake as we had produced that stunner yesterday, thanks to Flossie Pops Cakery.  BJ asked if they had anything for a birthday celebration and they produced this charming greeting on a marzipan plaque.Marzipan Happy Birthday

I usually work from home on a Monday but I have to go in tomorrow.  It is going to be very cold tonight so the roads will be icy – not looking forward to the drive to the station 😦Snow on the drive

It does look pretty though.  The apple tree is covered in snow.snow on the apple treeAt home, Harvey retreated under the stairs to cuddle the dogs.

I have the glums.  It has been so much fun planning this weekend and looking forward to it and then even better living it.  But now it is finished and the house is quiet again.  It always seems empty without Lara in it.  Still, i have so many happy memories I won’t be sad for long.  Plus I need to plan healthy eating starting from tomorrow morning.  Have a good evening.

21st Birthday Lunch

Today was not a day for diets and being healthy.  It was Lara’s family and special friends lunch.  A day to spend celebrating our beautiful and extraordinary daughter’s first 21 years, with those who have known her all her life.

First things first, we needed cake.  Thank you to Ketta at Flossie Pops Cakery for making and then delivering this beautiful cake.  If you live locally and need a cake for a special ocassion, click on the link above and have a look at Flossie Pops’ site.  Ketta will make whatever you want.  I wanted a chocolate fudge cake as that is Lara’s favourite, covered in pink to celebrate her girliness and with some models of a few of her favourite things: Tiffany, high heels, Elnett and mascara.  We were all delighted with the result.  Thank you Ketta.

You can never have too much cake so I also bought a ‘Whisky Bomb’ from Konditoor & Cook’.  It doesn’t taste of whisky to me but I love it.  It is a marbled chocolate and vanilla moist sponge covered in marzipan.  One of my favourites.Konditor & Cook

Despite the snow and the distances people had to travel, everyone who was able to come to Lara’s family and special friends lunch made it.  We are so grateful to you.  For those who were absent, Ian, BJ, Jeremy, Godfather Dan and Anne, we wish you had been here too.

Thank you to all of you who came and braved the snow and ice to get here.  We are so thankful you did.  And a special thank you to Michelle, for collecting Granny and Papa.  It wouldn’t have been the same without them.

All Of A Dither

Today has been frustrating and I have been all of a dither.  The plan for today was for Lara to come home at lunch time, spend the afternoon baking while I worked and then we would spend a couple of hours early evening setting the house, making it look special so we would be ready for the family and family friends celebration of her 21st tomorrow.

I have even been dithering about with buying food.  The majority was delivered by an on-line supermarket on Thursday but other items, such as salmon fillets, were due to be picked up today.  Supposing no one could come due to the snow?  What would I do with 30 salmon fillets?

I had a vision of the perfectly planned lunch for my gorgeous girl’s 21st.  We are ready for everyone and hope everyone can come.  But just in case people can not come, some things have not been done and we are not spending the evening preparing the house.  Instead, we will gratefully receive each and every dear and precious visitor who braves the roads or trains and we will ply them with decent food and plenty of it.  It will be homely and comfortable rather than glitzy and sophisticated.  Rather like myself.

Now normally when I am stressing and anxting, I eat.  Constantly.  But not today.  Today I completely lost my appetite until about 1:30 when I had a wrap spread with mayonnaise, humous, lamb’s lettuce and rocket.

wrap with humous and greenery

Then I nibbled some chocolate and peanuts.  I didn’t go crazy but there was quite a bit of munching going on.   Lara was making the Chocolate, Crunchie Nutty Bars that I blogged about here for the party tomorrow.  I was still dithering.

Chocolate slab

In the evening when they had set and were cut in to squares, I had a whole one plus crumbs.  Worth every calorie though, as these are so good.

Choc Crunchie Nutty Squares

We then enjoyed a whisky and ginger ale, snuggled up on the sofa watching Jaws while supper cooked.whisky and ginger ale

I made a pork and beans casserole using pork chops from the pigs reared on the farm at Harvey’s school.  So they were very local.  Cooked in the slow cooker.Pork 'n' beans in crock pot

Pork and Beans

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 4 pork chops with all fat removed
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 red pepper, halved and deseeded
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 150 ml lager beer
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 can of cannelini or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a pan, fry the chops on both sides until brown and set aside
  2. Put the onion, garlic, red pepper, paprika, cumin, coriander and oregano in a food processor.  Add half the lager and blend to a puree.
  3. Add the puree to the pan the chops were cooked in and heat, stirring continuously for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the tomatoes, pork chops and remaining lager.
  5. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 2 hours.
  6. Add the beans and cook for a further 1 hour.

We ate this with broccoli and new potatoes.  The pork was tender and flavourful and the sauce was good.  Yummy.

Pork 'n' beans

I hope all my family and friends can travel here tomorrow.  We really want to see you all. But only if it’s safe.  Here’s hoping.  More dithering to come I suspect.

Wintery Landscapes

I was not in the mood for food at all today which is very unusual.  For breakfast I had muesli with some extra oats, soya milk and Natural yogurt.  For lunch, I had exactly the same!  Plus 1 tbsp of honey.  I did track points today and my cereal consumption (i.e. breakfast and lunch) was 24 points as lunch was a large bowlful.  Supper was even less exciting.  So boring in fact I didn’t even bother with a photo.  I had a mashed butternut squash with 20 g butter, lots of black pepper and 175 g 1.5% fat cottage cheese.  7 points.

muesli and yogurt

Winter is definitely here.  I love the winter landscapes and the pastel hues of the early morning.  Unfortunately I was very busy today at work and didn’t manage to get outside for my walk until 3pm.  By then it was still very cold and calm and quiet.calm water

So much that is usually vibrant and growing was frozen, still, surrendered to the cold and frosts.

Sub Zero Salads

2 days eating and exercise in one post today.  I was out last night hence no blog and this will be brief as I am very tired and actually want nothing more than to curl up in bed with my book.  It is sub zero out there but I have managed to eat salads and plenty of other healthy food.  It was minus 5 this morning, according to my car thermometer!  Some bad food too !

While I was waiting at Monmouth on Tuesday morning for my once a week latte, the Ginger Pig van arrived and 4 porters scurried around unloading it.  Rather them than me.

I enjoy watching all the activity around the market, early morning.raw pig and cyclists

My breakfast was a latte and granola with yogurt, blackerries and apple.  Yummy.coffee and yogurt

Later on in the morning I ate 2 mandarins.granola and clementines

At lunch time I walked over London Bridge to the North side of the river and back, whch is at least a mile.  For lunch I went to Pret and bought a chicken soup

Pret chicken sou[

and the superfood salad which had a shocking number of points in.  I think it was 13 !!!!!Pret Superfood

I was out last night visiting some one I am extremely fond of and who is very special to me.  Gail, who we met when she became our au pair when we were children.  I hadn’t realised how close she lives to my office.  I thought she was nearer Charing Cross but I was wrong and it only took me about 10-15 minutes to walk there.  I am going again!  We had a very cosy cup of tea and flapjack beside the fire and then headed out for supper.

Gail

We went out for tapas round the corner and ordered 4 dishes which we shared: tortilla, garlic prawns, grilled vegetable salad and spinach with raisins and pine nuts.  It was all good and the prawns and spinach were fantastic.Tapas

So not a huge meal but every bite was tasty.dinner 15-1-13

Now this was naughty.  One scoop of salted caramel ice-cream and one scoop of lime and cactus.  Both were really good.  To aid digestion we had a glass of red wine too.

caramel ice cream and lime cactus

This morning I took in some overnight oats with chia seeds, natural yogurt and soya milk with added blueberries.Overnight oats with blueberries

I popped round the corner for lunch with Kevin to the usual – TAS cafe.  I had 3 salads: spinach and apple, chick pea and tzatziki (yogurt and cucumber).

TAS lunch 16-1-13

The chick pea salad is good.chickpea salad

The spinach and apple is my favourite.  They use a green apple which tastes fantastic with the spinach plus sesame seeds for protein.  Really good.

I was very tired when I got home.  Today was challenging for a variety of reasons so I wanted to eat quickly.  In to the pan went a huge amount of kale, left over quinoa tabboule from Saturday, 2 eggs and some smoked salmon.

Quinoa, eggs, kale and salmon

So there it is.  2 days eating.  Trying hard to stay healthy in such freezing weather when you really want hot chocolate and hearty stews and warming carbs.  I am not on top of my points.  Last night I was not sure how to work them out and today I was tracking until lunch time and then too busy tonight.  I know for sure that I was over yesterday but I am quite confident I am ok today so hopefully it balances out.

So there we are.  Now I am off to bed with The Hundred Year Old Man Who Jumped Out Of The Window.  Good night!

Down But Not Out

Weight Watchers weigh in tonight did not go well.  Or rather, my debauchery over the weekend was expensive and I put on 1.5 pounds which I am disappointed about and cross with myself about.  I came home and had one of those moments all dieters face, some more frequently than others.   Shall I stuff my face to get over my failing or strengthen my resolve.  I decided to be better then ever and had a light supper.  So I am down but not out.  Or up but not giving in.

Our day of positive thinking started early.  Despite the lightest of snow coverings, a certain someone raced outside to make a snowball and managed it.

Snowball

Breakfast was 8 points:

40 g oats = 4
200 ml almond milk = 2
15 g almond butter = 3

My 1 hour walk was wetwet walk

Lunch was 14 points:

1 chicken breast = 4
1 tbsp olive oil = 4
1 falafel = 4
1 medium corn on the cob = 2

It was delicious, stir fried with Benenden Sauce which I am loving and some chilli flakes as I fancied something spicy after a cold walk.  The falafel crumbled to make the meal seem more bulky than yesterdays version and the cavolo nero with the Benenden Sauce in particular tasted wonderful.  This will be repeated.lunch 14-1-13

Supper was 11 points:

half a tub of Tideford’s Italian Tomato and Red Lentil Soup = 2
30 g Cheddar = 3
50 g Stilton = 6
Cheese on scales and soup
I stirred the cheese in to the soup which makes it tasty and more substantial.Tomato soup and cheese

I also had milk in tea which was 2 points and I earned 5 activity points from 1 hours walking.  I also snacked on 2 apples.  So a healthy day which is a successful day.

Gorgeous Girls

I had a bit of a heavy heart today.  Time to say farewell again to my lovely girl who was heading back to Durham (not for long though but more on that another day).  She was taking Lucy with her and I was happy she would have company as that is a long drive.

I cooked a big breakfast as they were not planning on stopping during the 5 1/2 hour journey.  I had one slice of wholemeal toast with a poached egg and some smoked salmon.   7 points (60 g salmon = 2, 1 slice bread = 2 and  egg = 3).  I bought the bread and salmon in the village shop which needs support.  The bread comes from a local bakery and the salmon is smoked locally.

smoked salmon and egg

The forecast was for snow which was not helping my anxiety levels!  Farewell gorgeous girls, until next time.Lara and Lucy

Drive carefully.Car going through gate

I had a late morning snack of a Dr. Karg’s cracker, butter and some Stilton – 7 points.

I then made a light lunch.  After marinating chicken breasts in fresh lemon juice, salt and tarragon I covered the dish and baked in the oven for 25 minutes.  This resulted in very moist just cooked chicken breasts.  I chopped them up and stir fried with sweetcorn scrapped from the cob, cavolo nero and green beans.chicken, sweetcorn and cavolo nero

It was light and very tasty.  9 points (chicken breast = 4, oil = 4 and corn =1).Chicken and veg

I stir fried using Benenden Sauce which is made locally.  Although it is sold as a salad dressing, it makes  a very good stir fry sauce as it is sweet and garlicky and has soy sauce in it.  If you haven’t tried it in a str fry, give it a go.Benenden Sauce

I spent a very enjoyble 3 hours playing Mah Jong with Annette and David.  I had a large glass of white wine – 6 points.

I was not in the mood for cooking this evening so I made a simple supper of 40 g Gruyere (4 points), 46 g Red Leicester (5 points), grapes and a juicy orange.grapes, orange and cheese

This was not a perfect weekend of eating and Friday was a disaster.  So not very excited about weigh in day tomorrow but I will definitely go anyway.

Lebanese and Vegan

Due to a very late and debauched (but lovely, thank you Sarah) evening over the road on Friday night, my Saturday started very late and with a requirement for rehydration, nutrition and energy.  The obvious solution is a smoothie, after the Berrocca.

Smoothie ingredients 12-1-13

Raw kale and blueberries for super nutrition, dates and bananas for a much needed energy boost, blue poppy seeds for protein and to reduce the GI, Natural yogurt to settle a gurgley tummy and hemp seed milk.blueberries, dates and kale

It’s frothy man!frothy smoothie

Having risen late my meal times were all wrong for the day.  During the afternoon I snacked on Dr.Karg crisp breads with peanut butter.  Not a good diet choice but easy while I planned my evening’s cooking.

My sister Holly was coming for supper with her family, 2 of whom are vegetarian.  I think that if you are vegetarian for reasons of compassion towards animals, as these 2 are, it would be good to enjoy a meal where you are not sitting next to lumps of meat.  So a vegetarian meal was planned for all.

I really enjoy Middle Eastern food and that was my theme for supper.  I made falafel and taboule from a blog called Tabkhet el Yom, written by a Lebanese lady, Nina.  I have had her falafel and tabboule recipes on my ‘Recipes To Try’ page for a while and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to make them.  I also made humous and garlicky flatbreads, which I have made and blogged about before.

Nina’s falafel recipe is here.

Nina’s tabboule recipe is here.

Humous recipe is here.

Garlicky Flatbreads is here.

I do not have the falafel making gadget Nina refers to (hmmm, I think, a potential new kitchen gadget :-)) and neither did I have ‘falafel spices’ so I shall share my recipe.  It worked very well and was different to the falafel I buy in the shops or eat in restaurants but a great way to eat fresh broad beans!

Falafel

Ingredients: (serves 8)

  • 1 cup of chick peas
  • 2 cups of broad beans
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh coriander
  • 1 tablespoon Falafel spices (I used 1/2 tbsp each of cumin and coriander powder)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 cloves of crushed garlic
  • oil for frying

Method:

  • Soak the chick peas in water for 24 hours, rinsing every 8 hours or so
  • Drain the water and place the chick peas in a food processor and mix well (yes, you do use them raw)
  • Rinse the broad beans and then place in the processor until finely chopped
  • Add the chick peas and broad beans to a large bowl
  • Place the crushed garlic, fresh coriander and the onion in the food processor and blitz
  • Mix all the ingredients together in the large bowl, season with salt, Falafel spices and the baking powder
  • Shape the falafel in to bowls ( we used an ice cream scoop to do this)
  • Heat the oil in a frying pan and gently fry them until brown on the outside

Nina’s recipe deep fat fries the falafel and this would make them crispier than mine.  I don’t like deep fat frying so mine were shallow fried.

The chick peas and broad beans were left quite chunky.  Mainly because my food processor didn’t manage to make them finer ( I didn’t use the Vita Mix which could have made them really smooth).
chick peas and broad beans

When I came to make the tabboule I didn’t have any bulgar wheat or couscous.  I could have sworn I did!  So I used quinoa instead which worked well.
Quinoa tabouleh

I had such a  lovely evening with Holly, Richard, Lucy and Emily and my family but completely failed to take any photos of everyone or the final stages of making this lovely dinner.  I also forgot to photograph my dinner plate until I had eaten some of it.  To round this out, I should have a added a dish of roasted vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, aubergine and courgette.  I will make this meal again as it was fun to make, really delicious and healthy. I realised later, it was not only vegetarian but vegan too.  So our dinner was Lebanese and vegan.Vegan supper 12-1-13To follow the meal we had Christmas pudding.  Yes we did.  I had bought the pud to take to Holly’s at Christmas but managed to forget it.  Holly had some brandy butter and cream left over so she brought that with her and we had the pudding.  It was not a huge portion as it was shared between 8 of us.

So a lovely evening and good food which has inspired me to seek out some more Lebanese recipes.
