A Lunch With A View

I was woken up today with a jolt, wondering what on earth the loud noise was.  It was rain!  It was like a Monsoon but only very briefly.  So the weather prognosis did not seem good.  However, it turned in to the most glorious day.

I have not been in to Le Pain Q for a while so I ventured in today and selected a skinny latte and a granola parfait.  Taken in to the office and eaten at the desk as usual.

Le Pain Q granola Parfait 1 Natural yogurt, granola and fresh fruit.Granola, fruit and yogurt Lovely fruit selection on top.Fruit on granola I went in here for lunch.  For those who don’t know it, this is Tate Modern, an art gallery with a fabulous restaurant on the 6th floor.Tate Modern I was taken here for lunch by a work colleague, Kevin, who I got to know as we used to sit next to each other.  He is leaving so we went out for lunch.  We were so lucky as we had a table by the window.  Look at that amazing view!View from our table Looking over the river I always think this view of the Millennium Bridge looks like one of those architect’s models.Milenium Bridge from Tate So it is worth going here for the view alone.  As a huge big bonus, the food is amazing too.

This was a delicious crab patty, with rye toast and quail’s eggs.crab and quail's eggs This fish and chips was perfect.  The batter was so light it was almost like tempura.fish and chips TateThis dessert was extraordinary!  Bitter chocolate and raspberry tart with pistachio crumble.  The flan base was crunchy and light, the chocolate deep and intense and the raspberries sweet and juicy.

There was no need for supper after that lot so I had a smoothie, made with an orange, apricots, banana, cacao and almond butter and coconut water.

Not a diet friendly day but an amazing foodie day – thank you Kevin.

Blue Tits

The lovely people at Detox Your World sent me some free samples.  They had come across my blog and sent me a lovely email asking me to choose some products I wanted to try if I could write about them.  Absolutely no restrictions at all on what I had to say or not say or when.  So although I was given some freebies, what I say about them is totally up to me.

I chose a jar of Cacao and Almond Spread.  I thought it would be lovely in a smoothie when I was craving chocolate.

Cacao and almond spread Unfortunately today we had some bread in the house and I was craving carbs so I enjoyed some spread on the toast.almond and chocolate 2 It is FAB-U-LOUS!!!  If you are used to the sweetness of a spread like Nutella you may not find it sweet enough.  But if you are used to healthy foods and a low sugar diet, it is perfect.  Lovely thick and slightly oozy consistency with wonderful chocolate and almond flavours.chocolate and almond 2 I am not confessing to how many slices I had!chocolate and almond I had a lovely lunch at Sarah’s today.  We were really good and didn’t meet until 1 hour before she had to go out so we only had an hour or it could be said we have a tendency to chat rather a lot!  What an hour it was.  Delicious fresh food but I raced out in such a rush I forgot my camera :-(.  We had a lovely rice salad with apple, celery, sultanas, curry powder and fresh herbs, tuna, boiled egg and green salad.  Followed by tea and apple cake.  Thank you Sarah, it was lovely.  Really lovely.

Hanging outside my back door is this lighthouse bird house.  It has been there for years, hence the cobwebs.  We have noticed lately though a Blue Tit flying in and out with wriggly things in her beak.  We have heard chirping and sometimes this little lighthouse is literally rocking, swaying from side to side.Lighthouse Today we saw our first Fledgling.Blue Tit 7 It was having a good look around.Blue Tit 6 Looks a bit grumpy.Blue Tit 5 Or is it scared about that first flight?Blue Tit 4 I did think this might be it and I could snap it in flight.  Go on little birdie, have a go!Blue Tit 3 But no.Blue Tit 2 Not today.  Shortly after I took this picture, it disappeared inside again.Blue Tit 1

According to one source I looked up, Blue Tits typically lay 10-12 eggs and on average 8 will mature.  The Mother Blue Tit has to feed them about 10 juicy caterpillars a day each.  That is 100 caterpillars a day, every day.  How marvellous for my vegetable beds.  I can’t believe there will be any caterpillars left for miles around, particularly since we also have Blue Tits nesting in the apple tree 🙂 Shame they don’t eat rabbits !

Seafood And Eat It

My stomach is distended, every muscle in my body aches and I had a very satisfying, weekend.  We went to Ramsgate for the weekend as we had lots of chores to do.  As soon as we got there on Saturday we headed out to Miles Bar.  This is a strange place.  Great location beside the marina, great coffee and cakes, fabulous mussels but some unpleasant items such as cheap and nasty mayonnaise and very variable waitressing quality but we all love their Moules et Frites so we set off and all had the same.

Moules et frites at Miles This was a hard working weekend for us all but we did have a stroll round the corner to a pub for a cheeky beer on Saturday evening.  The Edwardian shelters along the front have been refurbished and they look really good.evening stroll This is the delightful view from our dining room.  I love sitting here but unfortunately this was not a weekend with much time to sit and stare.looking at the marina 2 The front garden had become so overgrown it was hard to get to the chairs and tables.  This is a lovely spot to relax in as you are secluded from the road and protected from the sea breezes.

This was the destination for lunch.  This ugly old building at the end of the harbour wall has been unused for ages but about 6 months ago, a new restaurant opened in there.  This was our first visit to Royal Harbour Brasserie.

The house wine was good (Sauvignon Blanc) and most of us really enjoyed everything we ate.  It is not cheap and the portions are not massive but they were not stingy either.  I would say they were just right.

Timber!

Today was characterised by struggling with sweet food cravings and being upset by the almost complete demolition of my vegetable plot.

As happens most days, I started well.  This is without a doubt, the best Tahini I have ver had, anywhere, ever.

Tahini I had a spoonful of Tahini with strawberries, half an orange, an apricot and some blueberries.berries and Tahini Harvey and I both had one of these for breakfast – cheers!berry and orange smoothie After I had seen my vegetable plot I had one of these – a bowl of granola with yogurt.  I had played tennis be nevertheless, I did not need this.yogurt and cereal I had arranged to have a tree taken down.  It was a rather lovely tree but it cast shade over the spot I want my greenhouse to be in so it had to go.Tree on lawn I am loving the sense of light and space it has opened up.Logs on lawn Clearing up WHen the sun came out in the afternoon I realised another tree is also casting some shade in the wrong place so that may have to go too.  Or at least be trimmed.Big space Lunch was a Feta cheese salad with baked potatoes.  I was really craving the carbs today.Feta salad an jacket potatoes My vegetable patch is being decimated by 2 big fat bl**dy rabbits!!!!  I hate them and anyone local who wants to come and shoot them is very welcome to.  They did leave some lettuce but there are lots of gaps.missing lettuces This bed really upset me.  The Brussels were coming back to life and the cauliflowers doing well but they have all been munched back to just veins on what remains of the leaves.munched caulis Some of the beetroots and leeks had been trampled but I think most will survive.  There is absolutely nothing left of the French beans.  Nothing.trampled leeks Luckily I have some plants in the greenhouse but I am reluctant to put them out until those bunnies are dead bunnies.  I am sure fellow vegetable growers will appreciate quite how disappointing it is to plant vegetables from seed and after about 2 – 3 months careful tending and regular checking, to find them eaten by something small and furry is very upsetting.Veg in Greenhouse Lara made dinner for us with a Mexican theme – guacamole, tortillas, sour cream, Cheddar and chilli con carne.  Not a diet friendly meal but a very delicious one.Mexican for supper

Due to the distractions of the tree felling, the upset of the vegetable patch and a game of tennis, I had to work this evening until nearly 11pm to get everything finished.  So not a great start to the weekend but hopefully it will improve from here.

Munchy Mungous

So one bad night’s sleep and the diet goes to pot 😦 . I just had to start with a coffee.  I resisted the croissant

coffee but no croissant but did have an organic egg and cress sandwich for breakfast from Konditor & Cook.egg and cress sandwich For lunch I went out with  a colleague, Kevin.  We walked round to Canvey Street which is at Bankside, behind Tate Modern.  We decided to eat in Tsuru which specialises in Sushi.  I wanted something substantial though so I went for the Teryaki Bento box.  It was good.chicken teryaki

Having eaten a decent amount we wanted a little something extra so we went for a coffee and a brownie.  I did at least share the brownie!Leon brownie and coffee I had sweets on the train which I justified (obviously I should never have sweets!) as I was going to play tennis but when I got home it was raining so that was the end of the tennis ambition for the evening.

Dear darling daughter had made us a healthy supper which was amazing.  A baked butternut squash, stuffed with mushrooms, onion and garlic.  It was fabulous.  I confess I did add some butter and black pepper.Butternut squash stuffed with mushrooms I was still craving something sweet so I popped this incredibly juicy mango in to the blender.  I actually popped about half of it in to my mouth but the rest made it to the blender.juicy mango With a frozen banana, ripe apricot, fresh coconut pieces and some cashew nuts.banana and apricot Le voila!  Mango and apricot soft serve.  Deelicious!Mango and apricot soft serve

I still feel tired and I ate too much food today and moved too little.  But at least I ended the day with some nutritious food so not all bad.  Tomorrow’s another day which will hopefully be less munchy mungous than today was.

Reboot Day 2

This morning I made one of the best smoothies I have ever had in my life.  Ever.  When I say best I mean the tastiest.  It was absolutely sublime.  It was not necessarily the healthiest as it was mainly fruit and it is healthier to have smoothies with vegetables and nuts or seeds in it.

fruit in blender and flax seed oil Blackberry, Pineapple and Mint Smoothie

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 1/4 large Pineapple (core removed and roughly cubed)
  • 1 cup Blackberries
  • 1 Kiwi Fruit
  • 1 Banana
  • 1⁄2 Comice Pear
  • 1⁄2 cup Coconut Water
  • Approximately 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tbsp Flax seed oil (optional)

Method

Place all ingredients in blender and blitz until smooth
Backberry and pineapple smoothie 2 The colour was intense and the flavour absolutely superb.  The mint was surprisingly good.  I will definitely be making this again.Blcakberry and pineapple smoothie At lunch time Sarah popped over with her sister, Katy.  They read my blog ( 🙂 ) and were interested in trying a smoothie.  So I reasoned that anyone could make a fruit only smoothie, such as the one above.  You could probably make that one in an average blender.  So I wanted to make them a smoothie with green veggies and some superfoods i.e. a really healthy one.  Unfortunately I was enjoying their company so much I forgot to note down exactly what we made it with or take any photos.

It was certainly healthy.  It could probably have been sweeter but I am so used to making a smoothie for one, I perhaps didn’t increase certain ingredients enough such as banana to make it sweet enough for 3.  This had in it; 2 cups of frozen mixed berries, 1 banana, a generous amount of coconut milk, 2 tbsp chia seeds, a huge handful of spinach, cabbage and beetroot leaves and a tbsp each of Maca and Lucuma.  It was thick and quite earthy in flavour.  I liked it and hope they did too.Green and berry smoothie Cheers!Zoe and Katy I was too busy this afternoon to make the salad I was supposed to have for lunch so by late afternoon, when I was still too busy to stop to make anything, I caved in and had 2 slices of bread with peanut butter.  I should have snacked on some of these fresh fruits and vegetables instead but I didn’t.  Hey ho!Fresh fruits and vegetables For supper I did have a large salad.  Loads of green leaves and topped with leftovers from Sundays spiralled salad.  It was good. Mixed salad

I was disappointed I had 2 slices of bread with butter and peanut butter but at least I stopped there and didn’t go in a downward spiral of bad eating for the rest of the day.

Reboot with Joe and Zoe

To conserve some brain power this week I thought I would follow someone else’s healthy plan.  I liked the look of The Classic 15 Day Reboot Plan from a website called Reboot With Joe.  I found it when I was looking for a recipe for “green juice”.  Bizarrely, I liked everything I had today except the green juice!

When I first got up though I had forgotten my original intention and started with a cup of tea with lemon juice, cayenne pepper and Goji berries – such a perfect start to the day.

Goji berry tea Harvey and I concocted a delicious bowl of berryness.  He blended about 2 cups of mixed frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, red and blackcurrants) with apple juice and a heaped tablespoon of cashew nut butter.  Look at the colour of that!berry breakfast and cashew butter There was a little bit left for me too and it was soft serve, just how I like it.berry breakfast

Harvey thinks he had a bowl of berry ice-cream for breakfast but I know he had a huge serving of berries and cashew nuts so we were all happy.enjoying berry breakfast Remembering I was “rebooting” I made the first meal of the day which was the ‘Cherry Cinnamon Apple Bake’.  A simple recipe of cherries, apples, raisins and cinnamon, baked until soft (45 minutes).cherries I added half the cinnamon Joe’s recipe called for and it was still way too much.  Cinnamon on cherry and apple pie This was perfectly pleasant but I would have preferred to just eat the fruit.  I would have kept it raw and not bothered with the cinnamon.  I personally think this recipe was a waste of good cherries.cherry and apple pie Next was a green smoothie.  The ingredients seemed ok.  A huge heap of cabbage and spinach from the garden, celery, apples, cucumber and ginger.green juice ingredients It juiced up easily enough.making the green juice But tasted vile.  I think I overdid the ginger as it tasted incredibly bitter.  Lara is joining me on this ‘Reboot’ and we both struggled to get our 2 glasses of green juice down.  We did it though – lots of ice definitely helped.disgusting green juice Lunch was yummy.  A large green salad of rocket, lamb’s lettuce, carrot ( I didn’t have jicama!), tomatoes, half an avocado and some of the dressing I made yesterday.large mixed salad Mid afternoon was the raw carrot ginger soup which sounds disgusting but I loved it.carrot gonger soup 2 It contains carrot juice, avocado, agave nectar, ginger, Cayenne pepper, salt, coconut and olive oil.  It was creamy, smooth and really tasty.Carrot ginger soup We had to go out in the early evening to a trip to Harvey’s new school.  Beside the front door is this poster.  Wise words indeed.I shall pass through this world but once the school old building and blue sky Back at home it was too late to make the steamed vegetables and the salad and the dressing.  So I just had some steamed sugar snaps, green beans and broccoli drizzled with some of the Ginger Honey Soy Dressing which was good.green veg with dressing

A day well eaten.

A Shiny Golden Halo

It may have been cloudy across the South East today but people living locally to me may have thought the sun came out this evening.  In reality, that was the golden glow from my halo which is currently shining so brightly, it could be considered to be almost blinding.  Yes, I have been quite angelic with regards to my health today.

Healthy eating – tick
Nutrient dense and low calorie eating – tick
Exercise – tick
Time taken to relax – tick

I naturally wake up early every day and feel I should be up and doing things immediately.  I always seem to be busy, rushing around, completing chores but to help me get over my recent feelings of intolerable stress, I decided to have a lie in today – first time in months.  I lay in bed, enjoying a scented candle, reading.  And then watching some You Tube clips with Harvey that he wanted to show me.  After a relaxing bath I came down to get breakfast.  It was only 9:30 but I actually felt guilty for so much lazing around!

I picked two enormous plants; one beetroot and one cabbage.  I put the dismembered hose head in the picture for scale – these plants are massive.  Both have bolted and are flowering.  I picked them to use the leaves to make a green juice.

For exercise today we went in to Bedgebury Forest again and rode further than before.  We cycled round for about 1.5 hours so had a good amount of very hilly exercise!

H and L on bicycles By the lake We went in to one of the “Red” cycle tracks which means they are difficult.  This one was called Sweetness.Entrance to Sweetness It was challenging and certainly got my pulse racing. The photo doesn’t do it justice but this part of the track was down then up a very steep hill.  I confess I wimped out and walked down! Twice!  Twice because when we got to the end we had all enjoyed it so much we went round in a big loop and did it again 🙂  It is a beautiful forest to have on your doorstep and I really enjoyed being in it today.Steep hill It is great to have an activity we can all enjoy.Harvey in cycle helmet Until next time Alpacas.Alpacas in field

I may not need my new meditation CD to get me to sleep tonight 🙂

A Few Of Her Favourite Things

I was tired after the night and the week before so I made a very healthy start to the day.  I enjoyed strolling round the sunny garden looking for nutritious things for breakfast.  I picked a flowering cabbage and some spinach.  I juiced them together with a red pear, a kiwi fruit and 2 carrots.

Someone special was coming home for the summer today so I went out to choose some of her favourite things.  I ended up in Frankie’s Farm Shop .  Look at this basket of deliciousness, which was for lunch and supper.

Chez Maz

I was up with the sparrows this morning so I could get some work in early and then play a quick game of tennis.  I often intend to play tennis on a Friday morning but have only managed it once in the last year.  As I focus more now on increasing exercise, I was determined to go.  By working from 6 – 9 am, I didn’t feel bad about popping out to play tennis for an hour.

I had a small snack of a banana and a few cashew nuts to give me energy.  I thought I was playing doubles but it ended up as singles which I have avoided for ages as I don’t feel fit enough but actually it was OK and I really enjoyed running around.  Thanks for the game Emy.

banana and cashewsI wanted another breakfast pudding but this just did not work out well.  The pineapple was perfectly ripe, sweet and juicy so that should have been fine.

chopping pineapple I had soaked 1/4 cup sunflower seeds and 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds overnight and I blended it all together.  It was rather tasteless.  Bland.  Uninspiring.pineapple pudding So I stirred in some Lucuma, Maca, Kelp and Spirulina.  They didn’t improve the flavour but did boost the nutritional valueadd superfoods I am quite stressy at the moment and was craving chocolate so I made a chocolate shake for lunch.  If you want chocolate, have healthy chocolate.  I ground up 1 tbsp cacao nibs in a coffee grinder with 1 tbsp hemp seeds.Cacao nibs I added a cup of mixed berries for a berry boost.  I didn’t eat the candle obviously.  I was burning Patchouli oil.  I love its strong and earthy aroma and apparently it helps relieve tension and uplift your mood.oil burner berries and seeds I also added some Lucuma, Maca and Carob.  This was good.  Not as chocolatey as I wanted but it filled me up until diner time.

I finished work at 7, hopped in the shower and we headed up the road to my lovely neighbours, Marion and Colin’s.  Oh look, there are some of my favourite neighbours.  Let the good times roll.In Marion's kitchen I do confess I drank too much but not a ridiculous amount.  I started eating only the healthy food Marion had prepared.  Parma ham and melon, olives and bruschetta.  Yummy.  But then the wine took over so I had some crisps too.brushettas and ham and melon Our main course was a gorgeous chicken dish in a rich and slightly sweet sauce.  Served with rice, green salad and grated Parmesan on top.  Really good.chicken and rice and saladTa Daaaa !  A spectacular ice bowl, with slices of fruit within the ice and filled with berries.

There was then some chocolate consumption and a bit more wine.  Not too much so I feel fine the morning after.  It was a really lovely evening, with great food and a beautiful home to sit in.  But the best part, as always, was the wonderful company.  I went to bed a happy and much more relaxed person than the one who had woken up that morning.
