Dorset February 2014

On Friday evening I set off from home to drive to Lyme Regis in Dorset, a drive which ordinarily would take 4 hours.  This time it took considerably longer, thanks to the prolonged storm the UK is enduring at the moment.  Eventually we were close.  The Sat’ Nav’ said we were 13 minutes away. Hurrah!  I was tired as it had been a long day; I was working by 7am to make sure I could leave by 4pm.  Unfortunately there was a very large tree across the lane so I turned round and tried a different route.  This time I got to 16 minutes away and another tree was blocking the Lane.  Grrrr.  The wind was ferocious by now – apparently 80 mph and I was driving around narrow country lanes with no map, no idea which direction I was heading or even which way to go.  Sat Navs are great but you can go round and round in circles on the country lanes in Dorset as the Sat’ Nav’ does not know which roads are blocked due to fallen trees.

Just me and the little fella, a gale blowing and it was about 9pm.  I was remaining positive and we were 10 minutes away.  At 9 minutes away, in the midst of a lot of huge trees, there was another tree across the lane.  This was a narrow lane and I struggled to contain a major panic attack as I really slowly inched my way backwards and forwards, trying to turn my long car round in a narrow lane.  I succeeded but I had no idea which way to go and was thinking we may have to spend the night in the car.  I was doing my best to remain optimistic about getting there for Harvey but not convincing myself,  when we saw some lights in the distance.  Hurrah!  We spotted our escape route and took it.  5 and a half hours after leaving home I made it to my sister’s.  To say I was relieved was an understatement.  It obviously took vast amounts of wine for me to calm my nerves.  Apologies to Lucy and Trevor for all the anxiety I caused but we got there in the end.

Lyme Regis paper

Today we had a lovely walk along the beach in sunshine but I unfortunately deleted my photos before they loaded so I will have to hope tomorrow is sunny again so I can return to the beach and take some more.  Luckily Lucy took a couple.  The sights were extraordinary.  Huge amounts of pebbles from Monmouth Beach (as in the foreground of this photo in the paper) were washed over the Cobb wall and dumped in to the harbour.  Along with huge trees and even posts sunk in to concrete.  Hard to believe our eyes really.

After our lovely walk along Lyme Regis beach we went to Bridport and enjoyed a fantastic pizza and salad for lunch at The Stable.  Leaving Trevor and the children to enjoy a pudding, Lucy and I went shopping.  I took some charming photos in this wonderful wool shop but only this one survived.Balls of wool Caroline – are these yours?  We left them there in case you want to pop by and pick them up 🙂bra and knickers These charming industrial buildings beside the river are currently being used to house vintage, antique and bric a brac shops. Bridport antiques Perfect for pottering about in.BridportWe stopped at a wonderful farm shop on the way back to Lyme from Bridport called;

I have no photos of my pizza so it obviously had no calories which means I had plenty left over for a chocolate dipped flapjack with a cup of tea back at Lucy’s.

Dinner was a real treat; one of Trevor’s Shepherd’s Pies with a stack of veggies and a glass of bubbly.  What a treat 🙂

The winds are calmer and all seems quiet outside but we are not going out tonight.  We will be in watching one of my sister’s huge range of latest films.  Maybe another glass of fizz would go down well.

Good Sprouts

I have eaten some superbly healthy food which was much needed after a disaster yesterday.

I exited my usual station from a different exit and discovered this charming little area and unfortunately a Konditor & Cook which I know well from Borough Market.  I managed to walk past in the morning but was lured back for lunch.Konditor & Cook near Waterloo This little area of terraced houses is totally residential.  It was like a little village amongst the train lines and tall modern buildings.  I really liked it.Whittlesey Street Really lovely.Whittlesey St This image was stuck in my mind during a stressful morning so I walked back at lunch time.K&C cakes I had a healthy lunch of baked salmon with 3 delicious salads.  But then a cake binge.  I wish I didn’t do that but I do.  I do at least have them far less often but sometimes it still happens.  The rest of the day was an eating disaster.salmon and mixed salads

So I awoke today determined to be very good.  Very good indeed.  I started with a lovely bowl of egg fried brown Basmati rice with onions and lots of kale.  Plus some sprouts.

I love the words on the front of this packet; “these sprouts are grown with the conscious awareness of the interconnectedness of everything and all life.”Sky Sprouts I had a huge bowl of mixed leaves with 2 celery sticks, a large tomato and a pile of mixed sprouts.sprout salad 3 The sprouts taste quite peppery which I like but I can see why they are not to everyone’s taste.sprout salad 2 With the dressing this was very tasty.  It did take a lot of chewing to get through.

Mainly I am delighted I was straight back on the diet after yesterday’s blow out.  I can do this.

Weigh Day Tuesday no. 6

Weigh Day Tuesday.  The 6th one of the year and I lost the 3 pounds I stupidly put on the week before.  So I am back to a total loss for the year of 21 pounds which averages out at 3.5 pounds per week which is awesome 🙂

An old favourite for breakfast.  Overnight oats made with 40 g oats, 200 ml almond milk, 10 g chia seeds, a banana and a black tea.breakfast and tea A delicious start to the day.

A Good Start

I made a good start to my week today.  In fact, I made the little fella a good start too.  We started yesterday.

Providing a healthy breakfast is something I have struggled with as Harvey has to be on the school bus so early.  He is not often keen on bread/toast and is intolerant to dairy.  I refuse to let him have sugar so breakfast can be a challenge.

If I take him to his bus, I can get up and make something really quick like scrambled eggs.  But I don’t always take him and he doesn’t always want to eat something cooked that early.  There is a no eating on the bus rule so he needs to eat before he leaves home.  So I had a lightbulb moment in the week – I can make him a healthy flapjack.

I need to experiment with quantities and when I get it perfect I will share but this is what we started with.  Chopped up pecans, almonds and pumpkin seeds, toasted coconut, finely ground hemp seeds and raisins.flapjack nuts and seeds Lots of oats, coconut butter instead of dairy butter and agave nectar instead of sugar.  I personally do not believe that agave nectar (or honey or maple or rice syrups) are much better then sugar and would prefer to do without but I had to make it edible for the little fella.oats, nectar and coconut I melted the syrup and coconut butter and added them to the bowl with the oats.Agave nectar and coconut butter We also added a chunk of cacao liquor which melts easily and gave a lovely chocolate flavour.  I forgot the photo of the finished product but they were good.  Not quite moist enough but very moreish.  So I do not eat them, they are individually wrapped and in the freezer so I can take one out each night for Harvey.  This was a great success this morning as he could munch his flapjack while he got dressed.  I was happy that he went off to school with a tummy full of healthy nuts, seeds, oats and coconut butter which kept him going until lunch time.Cacao Liquor I forgot to make myself anything for breakfast so I popped out to Leon and bought their salmon and avocado pot which had a poached egg at the bottom.  I actually didn’t like it that much, mainly because the  salmon was too strongly flavoured and a bit stringy.

172 calories.salmon, avocado and egg As the main part of breakfast was low in calories I thought I would “treat” myself to an unsweetened soya milk latte.  I don’t really like soya milk that much though in such quantities so I wont bother with that again.

96 calories.Leon latte It was sunny at lunch time :-).  So I walked a mile to pod and bought their fabulous and completely amazing chicken nori wraps.  They are so low calorie and delicious I bought 2 as they only have 187 calories each box.  That is 187 calories if you do not have the dressing.  I find them delicious enough to not need the dressing.   So lunch was 374 calories and I burned 252 calories getting them 🙂pod chicken nori roll Dinner was also packed full of nutrition and not too many calories.

I bought this lovely box of 3 different types of sprouts from Wholefoods Market on Saturday so I added some of them to my dinner.3 sprouts

80 g brown Basmati rice, a pile of stir fried veggies and lots of sprouts, with some soy sauce.

310 calories.dinner 10-2-14

I have ended up today way under my calories allowance.  I ate 952 calories and burned 252 which means I have another 500 I could eat.  But I am going to leave them in the calorie bank as I had too many yesterday and I do not feel at all hungry.  Today was a great day and I hope this is going to be a great week.

Crafting, Cabaret and Cocktails

What a very lovely day I had.  Sadly not the best day on a diet but lots of fun.  I just had tea for breakfast so I could save calories for lunch.  I was meeting Laura early in central London at a Japanese noodle restaurant.

Frith Street I had read about Koya recently and was keen to try it.  There is a Koya Bar next door which is a noodle bar but we sat in the restaurant.Koya Frith Street Apparently these are authentic Japanese Udon noodle dishes.  I haven’t been to Japan (yet) so can not say how authentic they are but this place was definitely very popular so it wasn’t just us that enjoyed them.Koya wall menu We sipped Hoji tea while we read the menu.Hoji tea We still couldn’t decide what to have so we sipped some sake.sake and Koya menu We eventually both went for the daily Udon special which was cod, spinach and broken egg.  It was very good.  The broth was full flavoured, the textures an excellent consistency and the egg, spinach and cod were tasty too.  It was a very light but filling meal.cod and spinach udon Having enjoyed our lunch we strolled through Seven Dials to Endell Street where we found the Hospital Club.  We went up to the 4th floor – I like this sign in the lift.weight limit in lift I have never been in here before and it was great.  Lots of different rooms and bars to hang out in and if the weather was warmer, there are several rooftop seating areas too.  This place demanded a cocktail, it really did.  I found one without sugar.cocktail in the Hospital Club We were here for Crafternoon Cabaret.  You sit at a table, are provided with materials and an instruction sheet for making things, have waitresses bring you drinks (and food if required) and watch comedy cabaret.  One of the most enjoyable afternoons I have had for a long time.crafting and cocktails We were making drinks charms.  I am not much of a sewer on a good day and under the influence of sake and cocktails I was not having a good sewing day.  But I managed a little bit of drinks charm bunting and a drinks charm bag.Crafternoon Cabaret Laura rather rudely thought it would best be suited to Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend.  She makes a good point.

I had a wonderful afternoon.  Thank you Laura for your lovely company and thank you Hannah for creating such a wonderful event.  I am looking forward to the next one.Ken's handbagI walked back to the station past China Town and on to Piccadily as I wanted to go to WholeFoods Market.  It was so crowded I cut short my visit.  Chia Town London After several drinks this afternoon I was in the mood for something forbidden. I managed to battle my demons.  I didn’t eat as healthily as I should have done but I followed my rules so didn’t go crazy.  This rice salad was very edible and I enjoyed it on the train home.Indonesian Rice Salad No calories were provided.Indonesian Rice I also ate these and a Bounce Ball with Macadamias and coconut.  At home I ate some more coconut pieces with raisins and mixed nuts. Fig Bites

I would definitely have been way over my calorie allowance today so tomorrow I must be very good indeed and go on a long walk. A very long walk.

Remember The Farmers

One of many things I am not eating at the moment is bread.  I wanted scrambled eggs today so what could I put them on if I couldn’t have toast?

Ta daa.  Sliced tomatoes.toms on plate Breakfast doesn’t get much simpler than that!

149 calories.tomatoes and scrambled eggs I had lunch in our local pub and restaurant – The Milkhouse.  I met Tanya and we had a chance for a good catch up.  I declined wine as I had a lot of work to do and had a coffee instead.  They do make good strong coffee.Milkhouse coffee I went for one course and had steak.  It was served with Bearnaise sauce, big fat chips, sliced runner beans and a large mushroom.  I only ate the lean meat and about half the chips and Bearnaise sauce.  The beans were delicious and perfectly cooked.  I wished there had been a much bigger serving of the beans.  I am used to eating loads of veggies with a meal, rather then having them as a garnish.

The food was fine.  The steak was a little over cooked for my liking but the flavour was really good.  The company was excellent and I enjoyed sitting in the sunshine.

Hard to be certain but I think this meal had 902 calories.  Milkhouse Steak and Chips

This evening I caught up on Facebook and was very sad to see this desperate news clip of a farmer battling to save his animals from flooded land in Somerset.

http://www.itv.com/news/west/update/2014-02-06/a-traumatic-day-for-farmer-james-winslade/

Most of the news stories about the flooding we have been enduring here in England, in some areas since Christmas, have focused on loss of property or who is to blame.  This story is about a farmer, whose land and animal feed is flooded and and as the flood water rises, his animals became threatened.  It is heart breaking to see.  But so good to be reminded about the struggles so many farmers face to produce the food we take for granted we can just stroll down the road and eat.  So I thought about that steak I enjoyed for lunch, which I could eat, thanks to farmers such as James Winslade.  I hope his business and all his animals survive.

I had an easy supper.  There was a portion of the quinoa and aduki beans with roasted vegetables in the fridge so I heated that up.

433 calories.supper 7-2-14

Total daily calories are 1,516 so over my target but by no means a disaster.  Many people diet very successfully by sticking to 1,500 calories and as my upper level, I am not upset by having gone up to it.

Nutrition Data

When you are following a restrictive diet, as I am, you need to know what ingredients are in the food you eat.  When you buy food from a shop such as a supermarket, most ingredients have to be listed on the packet.  But when you eat in a restaurant, cafe or other food outlet, it can be really hard to find out.

One solution is to always prepare your own food but that is not always practical.   I did make breakfast to take to work today though.

Overnight oats.  40 g oats put in a pot with 200ml almond milk and 10 g chia seeds, mixed together and left in the fridge overnight.  When I was ready to eat it, I mashed in a banana.overnight oats and banana and tea Yummy.  This is such an easy breakfast to prepare.

343 calories.overnight oats 6-2-14 Another solution to knowing what is in your food is to only eat in places that tell you.  Such as Leon.  Have a look at the nutrition data they provide here.  It is fantastic.  You can click on the meal to see a more detailed breakdown and they list ALL ingredients.  I wish it was mandatory for all food chains to do this.

I had a chicken noodle soup which was delicious and only 99 calories.Leon chicken noodle soup Followed by a Chicken Superfood salad.  It was a shame I hadn’t checked the nutrition data in advance as I would have had this without the dressing which contains dairy.  However, I didn’t know when I ordered it and so I ate it and enjoyed it all.Leon Superfood chicken Chicken, quinoa, various green leaves, broccoli, tomatoes and seeds.  Quite excellent.

435 calories.Leon chicken superfood salad I was too tired tonight to want to cook so I just had some nuts and grapes.  50 g mixed nuts and a large handful of grapes.

396 calories.nuts and grapes

I managed to walk for half an hour today, which was a good effort considering the poor weather at lunch time.

Another day within calories and a newly discovered source of healthy foods.  I will read the nutrition data in advance next time though.

Simple Food

I decided last night to work from home as London would be chaotic thanks to a 48 hour Tube strike and trains may be precarious due to yet another wet and windy storm.  I chose to eat very simple food today.  Food that would be healthy, nutritious and easy to prepare as I had a lot of work to get through.

Flax seeds, which I ground so they are easier to digest.flax seeds An orange for juice, sweetness and vitamins.orange slices 5-2-14 Buckwheat groats which I soaked for 2 hours first in water.buckwheat saoking I chewed it slowly and enjoyed the goodness in this simple breakfast.  It would have been much nicer with a large dollop of yogurt and some honey but it was fine as it was.

301 calories.breakfast 5-2-14 Lunch required a lot of forward planning and soaking but it was easy and didn’t take much time.  I wanted to eat some seaweed so I soaked some Arame, which is very fine and cut in to matchstick sized pieces.Japanese Arame Lunch was a bed of rocket, topped with quinoa, aduki beans, seaweed and roasted tomatoes and red pepper.simple food 5 I roasted the tomatoes and peppers with olive oil and seasoned them with salt and pepper.  The beans were plain boiled and the quinoa was cooked with some vegetable stock to add some flavour.simple food 4 The seaweed was very pleasant.simple food 3 The roasted tomatoes made the difference between an ok meal and a really good meal as they added moisture and sweetness.simple food 2 433 calories.simple food 1 So beans and quinoa are tasty but I wanted something more interesting for dinner.  Vegan food can be delicious but grains and beans are surprisingly high in calories. When you are dieting, you don’t have enough spare calories to make a tasty sauce so the food is a bit bland.  Well, maybe it doesn’t need to be.  The main challenge today was that I was too busy to spend time cooking.  I will look up some tasty and low calorie vegan meals that have beans, whole grains and a good sauce.

Dinner made use of left over roast pork.  I stir fried onion, ginger, garlic, tenderstem broccoli, yellow pepper, button mushrooms and spinach in coconut oil.  I added the pork with some lime juice, fresh basil and dried chilli flakes.dinner 5-2-14 It was really good and I enjoyed every mouthful.

485 calories.Pork stir fry 5-2-14

Heavy rain and strong wind put an end to my plan for a lunch time walk and I had meetings at the time the local pool was open for lane swimming.    I am probably deluding myself if I think I may go swimming this evening at 9pm!

Meal Mistakes

Sometimes meals do not turn out how we plan them.  To have three mishaps in a row is definitely unlucky!

Breakfast.  Looked good.  Blackberries and a banana blended with some almond milk

blackberries and bananas poured over oats and chia seeds.  By the time I had taken it to work it was a lovely consistency and flavour.  Such a shame the plastic under the blackberries had been put in the blender without me noticing and been blended so had to be extracted while I ate!

393 calories.breakfast 4-2-14 I still felt hungry after breakfast so I popped out for a large tea and was told the soya milk in Starbucks had no added sugar.  It tasted sweet though and when I looked it up on-line, it does have sugar added.  I was really annoyed but at least now I know and won’t be going back.

I didn’t have time today for a walk and barely had time to pop to a local shop – Tossed.  I was too hungry to go for a salad and instead chose a Thai green chicken curry.  Unfortunately they gave me a ‘Hot Greek with Chicken’.  This tasted ok and was on a par calorie wise with the Thai curry I fancied but it had some haloumi on it and pesto, both of which are the forbidden dairy!Tossed hot Greek So far today I have consumed sugar and dairy and had no time to exercise so I needed to do better for dinner.

545 calories.hot Greek with chicken I had very few calories left over for supper so I made the Cauli-Power Alfredo sauce to serve with spinach and mushrooms.  I made a mistake though and used a food processor instead of the Vita Mix to blend it.  Instead of the lovely creamy and rich consistency I had enjoyed before, it was just finely chopped and ordinary.  Edible though and low calorie.

247 calories.mashed cauliflower I have done ok with calories today.  I went to weigh in feeling rather anxious.  Partly due to the excessive eating at the weekend but also because the 6 pound weight loss last week worried me.  It seemed too much and I was expecting an adjustment.

I gained 3 pounds.  So I was disappointed but I am sure it will soon be lost; I am feeling as determined as ever.

I liked this card I was given today 🙂P1000765

Tomorrow I am going to cook all my own meals so should manage to do better.

Healthy Take Away

After a busy weekend I was too tired on Sunday evening to prepare food to take to work.  I resisted the temptation to grab an unhealthy breakfast and instead survived on black tea and coffee until lunch time when I walked a mile to the nearest pod to my office.  I wanted to go to pod because they tell you the calories in each meal and the nutrition breakdown.  The information they don’t provide though was if the food contains sugar.  However, 10/10 for pod.  I emailed one of their email addresses and my query was answered really quickly.  They are in the process of adding sugar to their nutritional profiles but the very helpful lady who answered my questions told me how much sugar was in the food I had eaten – very little 🙂

I went to the pod in More Place which is near London Bridge.pod wall hanging From More Place you have a rather lovely view.Looking East from More Place This is City Hall, where the London Assembly and the Mayor of London have their offices. The Beehive City Hall is close to Tower Bridge.Tower Bridge Which is next to the Tower of London.Tower of London A little bit further West along the North side of the river is The City. The City from More Place Having not eaten any breakfast, I had 2 things for lunch.  The chicken Nori wrap which amazingly only had 187 calories, which seemed too low to me but I double checked with the man behind the counter who assured me that was correct!pod chicken nori rolls I really liked this.  It was absolutely delicious and I will be having this again.pod nori rolls I also had a protein box which had smoked salmon mixed with dill and horseradish, boiled egg, ham and chicken with some chilli and sesame seeds.

631 calories.Stir fried pork and veg

Plus soya milk in three cups of tea and my daily total was 1,230 calories.  I earnt 246 calories by walking 2 miles in 40 minutes  so ended the day within my allowance.  I am pleased about that as I was worried that my weekend of eating bad foods would have tipped me back in to the land of unhealthy eating.  Luckily not.
