Seven Dial’s Festival

Today was all about chilling, hanging out, relaxing and shopping.  It was great.

After a relaxed morning at home, which involved a hearty breakfast of egg and bacon on tomatoes, Harvey and I headed up to London.
bacon egg and tomato I had seen adverts for the Seven Dials Festival which promised 20% off everything in all the shops.  We both needed new clothes (well Harvey did, I didn’t but let’s not be too pedantic) so off we went.  We had a picnic lunch on the train of a wholemeal wrap filled with chicken, lettuce and tomatoes.Wraps on train Unsurprisingly Seven Dials was busy but not unpleasantly so.  Oh look, there’s Gudrun Sjoden!  Literally everything did have 20% off except the items in the sale which had 40 % off !! Happy days 🙂Monmouth St during festival With no cars to worry many of the restaurants in Seven Dials had set up stalls outside which added to the festive atmosphere and fun of the day.La Bottega That may have to be tried and tested!tredwell's Harvey was delighted to find an ice-cream shop which sold chocolate sorbet.  It was very rich actually and he loved every single molecule of it.H in Scoop Look how brilliant this is – Seven Dials roundabout was astro turfed and it had deckchairs on it.  There was such a wonderful atmosphere here today which I really enjoyed.  This is my favourite part of London and I know I am lucky to work here but if I manage to get outside at all during the day I am constantly rushing and clock watching.  It was wonderful to be able to breathe deeply, take my time and not worry about the time or what happened next.  When we wanted to sit down we did.  When we wanted to walk, shop, eat, we did.  It was  really good.Seven Dials Festical

Feeling so relaxed I decided to lift my ban on Timber Yard which is lovely but frustratingly disorganised and slow when you are in a rush.  Several of my work colleagues and I like it very much but it is so slow you get too angry waiting for a very simple order so we rarely go any more.  However, I was not in a rush today so we went.

Timber Yard had made the most of the pedestrian zone by filling the pavement with all manner of chairs and tables.  We wanted to sit outside but all chairs were taken so we sat inside.

outside Timber Yard 2

Some of these chairs were brilliant such as the purple velvet armchair but my favourite was the old bus seat which had been converted in to a rocking chair!

Timber Yard provides iPads on the tables next to the windows which are very popular.  Unsurprisingly, when you are relaxed and not in a rush, the slow pace of life in Timber Yard is not at all annoying.  We gladly joined the throngs who were content to sit in here for ages, reading, surfing, chatting and even one person having a snooze on a sofa.Inside Timber YardWe sat in here for quite some time, Snapchatting with Lara, playing games, chatting and eating cake.
H in Timber Yard Oh dear me, the cake in here is very good.  We shared a moist and chewy chocolate and hazlenut cookie and this fantastic peanut butter blondie.  I had mine with tea.  Check out that cute little milk bottle!peanut butter blondie When we had shopped until we dropped and eaten until we were stuffed we wandered homewards.  I took Harvey via Trafalgar Square.  News to me but apparently that’s Nelson Mandela on the column!Trafalgar Square 16-5-14 2

Outside the National Gallery was a very wide range of street artists who were all quite funny but because they were rather useless, not because they were actually comedic.  It all added to the pleasure of the day.Trafalgar Square 16-5-14 Having seen Nelson’s column (Horatio’s, not Mandela’s) so many times from a distance, it is always surprising to see how very tall it is up close and how huge the plinth is it stands on.H at Nelson's column I didn’t attempt to publicly humiliate myself by clambering up on to it but Harvey leapt up and had a good look around.H at base of Nelson's column 2 It was great that he had a chance to do this because usually we rush through here on our way to an event or on our way to catch a train.  I was feeling so relaxed I didn’t even think about checking when the trains run on a Saturday.  What will be will be.H at base of Nelson's column Harvey also managed to get on to one of the lions which was not easy without any assistance.  Look how enormous they are!  With quite a long drop down from the lion’s back I was relieved when he was safely up there.  Well, maybe stable rather than safe as I am not sure this is at all safe.H on lion 2 Well done little fella.H on lion

I do wish I had read the booklet about the festival at the start of the day, rather than on the train on the way home and I would have seen that many of the stalls, including Pimms and flower garlands, were complimentary!

Seven Dials shopping map

Never mind, we had a lovely day.  Not a good diet or even remotely healthy eating day but a day that was good for the spirit and the soul and a day that was good for this busy person to relax in and enjoy the moment.  I hope you all had a good day too.

The Blueberry Plant

I am still on my unwanted trend of eating too much sugary food amongst the nourishing food which I am disappointed with myself about.  Exercise has been quite poor lately too but I did manage to play tennis on Wednesday for the first time since Autumn so I was really pleased with that.

Out in the garden life is looking glorious.  Our garden has some stunning Azaleas and Rhododendrons.Azalea hedge at home They thrive in our slightly acidic soil and have grown in to these huge hedges.  Look at the left hand side of this picture – you can see my car to provide some scale.Rhodedendron hedge at home The small blueberry plant is looking very promising this year.  Have you ever seen blueberries growing?  Well the flowers are pretty little white ones.  These still have some rain on them.blueberries 6 The flowers die and the blueberries grow from the base of the flower head.blueberries 5 You can see better in this picture which I really like as the little blueberry cups are filled with rain water and you can see the cobwebs too.  All signs of the myriad of life in our garden.blueberries 4 Some of these blueberries, which are green, are now the right size and shape so I hope they do turn blue and that I get to them before the birds.blueberries 3 This shot is looking down in to the cups where the flower petals have recently fallen and the blueberries are just beginning to grow.  When you see how long they take to grow, how few there are on a plant and how long they take to pick, you stop feeling resentful at the high price of them in the shops.blueberries 2 They look perfect – just the wrong colour.blueberries 1 I made a chia pudding this week so I had something healthy to take to work for breakfast.  I got the recipe from Healthy Happy Life, a vegan blog I dip in and out of.  It is really easy to make – just remember to think about it the night before.

Chia Pudding

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 5 Tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup + 1 Tbsp almond milk or other milk of your choice
  • pinch of pink salt
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 scoop of protein powder
  • 1/2 tsp acai or pomegranate powder (optional)

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in to a large container and mix well for about 1 minute
  2. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight
  3. In the morning, add yogurt, fruit and nuts

chia pudding 4 Overnight the chia seeds absorb the milk and it ends up with a thick custard like consistency.chia pudding 3 I added half an orange and some chopped almonds and pumpkin seeds.chia pudding 2 I ate one portion yesterday like this.chia puding 1I fancied something different today though so this morning I tipped the chia pudding, yogurt and half orange in to the blender with a banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter and some additional milk to make a smoothie.  It was delicious.chia pudding smoothie One evening this week I made a lovely lentil and butternut squash soup.  I used up the last of the leeks from the garden.last of the leeks Which I fried with carrots and onions in some butter.  I made it in to a soup with home made chicken stock, puy lentils and butternut squash.  We like blended smooth soups so I blitzed it in the Vita Mix for about 5 minutes.  It loses the lovely bright orange colour of the vegetables but tasted lovely and is a pleasure to eat as it is so smooth.  Healthy comfort food.soup base Harvey and I have enjoyed this for supper in the week and today I had the last of it with some Cheddar cheese for lunch.  It was really good and next time I make it I will write down quantities so I can share the recipe.lentil and butternut soup

I do love Friday evenings and the anticipation of a weekend ahead of us.  Have a good one.

A Very Quick Supper

How do you make a very quick supper after a long and busy day at work?

Put on a pan of water to boil.

While it’s boiling, race outside to water vegetable garden.

Come inside, be relieved the water hasn’t boiled dry and cook the Gnocchi with some broccoli (4 minutes).

Thank you Jane for grabbing Harvey and looking after him for me.

Extreme Tiredness

For various reasons I am very tired.  One obvious one is the lateish night and too much wine I enjoyed last night with some of my neighbours down at the Manhunters.  It was great fun and the resulting tiredness was worth it.  But I am also tired because I have not exercised enough, not eaten enough healthy food and eaten too many carby and sweet things this week.

I ate too much sweet stuff today too but at least breakfast had fruity sweet things.  I made a large smoothie with lots of these frozen blckcurrants and a banana.

There is a portion in a tupperware pot all ready to take to work tomorrow.  I do hope next week is less stressful than the past week has been or even if it is as stressful, that I can deal with it more healthily.

Kale and Chard

I do like having lots of kale and chard in the garden and they seem to be there all year round which is even better.

I will cut the flowers off the kale this weekend but I have enjoyed having them recently as they provide a welcome splash of colour.kale flowers This morning I picked a handful of these leaveskale in garden 9-5-14 and rainbow chard.rainbow chard 9-5-14 The chard must be the most attractive plant in the garden but I actually prefer the flavour of spinach.chard 9-5-14 I do enjoy this though.swiss chaed 9-5-14 I made a cheese omelette for breakfast with a large serving of onions, kale and chard.breakfast 9-5-14 It was delicious.  Really good and I enjoyed every mouthful.   breakfast 9-5-14 1 I was stupidly busy again today at work and had no time for lunch, not even time to eat an apple and some nuts as I was racing against the clock all day.

So when I bought Harvey his Friday night fish supper I had one too.fish and chips 9-5-14 This has not been a good week for me and I put on 3 pounds, which is nearly everything I lost last week.  Very frustrating.

But to end on a very positive note, I was delighted to see Hartley Dyke Farm Shop lives on.  It is one of my favourite local shops and I go there every week so I am pleased for all the staff in there who work so hard and for all the local producers they help support.Hartley Dyke saved

How Sweetly Her Garden Grows

I indulged myself this Bank Holiday Monday by spending practically the entire day in the garden.

I ate well, sticking to the I Quit Sugar plan (unlike yesterday which was a disaster 😦 ).  For breakfast I had a fried egg on top of Swiss Chard with bacon and tomatoes.breakfast 5-5-14 Lunch was a goat’s cheese salad.  This is a large bowl but it was mainly full of salad leaves, with a French dressing and topped with cherry tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, olives and 1/4 of an avocado.  For supper we are having Jambalaya which is a rice and vegetable dish with Chorizo and chicken.  It is cooking now and smells lovely.  That was it on the food front.  No snacks, not even an apple.salad 5-5-14 I had a lovely walk over the road today.  The dogs are quite fascinated by the lambs leaping about and running around.dogs over the road view over the road The bluebells are on their way out but still beautiful and the scent is gorgeous.bluebells 2 bluebells 1 the stick The house in the woods has a stunning display of rhodendendrons.Rodedendron Back to my garden.  I got so much done today.paraphenalia I had a little helper in the morning.  I have had 20 Sarah Raven sweet pea plants in the little greenhouse which should have been planted out a while ago.  Note to self – read instructions when buying plug plants!  So they look a bit straggly but hopefully will recover.  Harvey also planted out half the sunflower seeds.  Lara did the other half before she went back to University and hers are beginning to germinate.  The mixed sunflower seeds were a Mother’s day present so I wanted them to sow them so I can think of them when I see the flowers.Harvey helping with sweet peas This little bed is by the entrance to the vegetable garden so I will enjoy the sunflowers and sweet peas every time I go in.  I am also hoping to enjoy my birthday present of some rose bushes which are destined for this bed.Sweet peas planted The Swiss Chard and Rainbow Chard has become unruly.  I placed the colander in front of the leaves to give an idea of scale.  The plants and most leaves are massive!Swiss chard before prune The stalks are very thick and they keep producing leaves which is great but if I don’t pick them, they get bigger and bigger.Rainbow Chard stalks The large ones are a quite tough so I cut some little leaves (in colander) for breakfast and pruned back the big leaves and stalks quite hard.large Swiss Chard leaves That looks better.Swiss Chard after pruning Shame to throw this lot on the compost but sometimes a hard prune is necessary.Chard for compost I planted out this cute little tin of 5 different salad leaves today.sarah raven organic salad leaves set It is an excellent set which comes with detailed sowing and growing instructions and some recipes!  I do like Sarah Raven products.SR salad leaves details I am hoping to grow more flowers in the garden this year and I ordered Sarah Raven’s half hardy cutting garden which will apparently give me 2 – 3 vases of cut flowers a week from summer in to autumn.  I  had received the plug plants on Friday and today I potted them on as they need to be hardened off before going in to the garden.  102 plug plants potted on !102 plugs in pots I actually didn’t have 102 pots (nearly but not quite) so some were planted directly in to pots on the patio and a couple in to sheltered sunny spots in the garden.plugs in pots They don’t all fit in the greenhouse so I have pots in every sunny and sheltered space I had available.  I hope they survive and thrive.flowers potted on I also planted out some Dwarf French Beans – Aguillon – which came from the Organic Gardening Catalogue.  The seeds germinated quickly and the young plants look incredibly strong and healthy so I am very optimistic about these.  They apparently grow lots of pencil straight French Beans.  Amazing to think these were just seeds in a little envelope about 2 months ago.French Beans Aguillon This is the bean bed.  I also planted out the French Beans – Royale – which grow purple but turn green when cooked.  The climbing French beans (wigwam on the left) are doing well but no sign of the runner beans germinating which is disappointing so I may have to buy some little plants.bean bed I also weeded all the beds today and after sowing the lettuces, covered the salad leaf bed in Environmesh to keep out the flies which last year decimated my Mizuna.veg garden 5-514

I am aching all over but feel very satisfied.  I ate well, I had a lovely walk with my young man and I achieved loads in the garden.  A tip top bank holiday.  I hope yours was good too.

Pilgrim’s Rest

I felt weary by the end of this week.  It has been incredibly stressful for many reasons, very long hours working plus one late night so I woke up today feeling very tired and fed up as I had to work today as well even though it is a Saturday.

Yesterday was the end of week one of following the I Quit Sugar plan.  I lost 4 pounds which I was really happy about but I didn’t follow the plan perfectly.  I did follow the plan except for eating sugar twice; some ice cream one evening and lots of chocolate at Marion’s another evening.

Apart from that I stuck to the plan and definitely felt better for it.

When I can cook breakfast at home my favourite is a cheese omelette with tomatoes or spinach.  When I am at work I take in coco-nutty-granola with natural yogurt and fruit.  Both breakfasts keep me going until lunch time very easily.cheese and tomato omelette I worked from home yesterday and planned to have a huge salad but I was too busy so I made a quick smoothie instead with protein powder and hemp seeds for protein, maca and cacao nibs for a bit of zing as I was very tired, half an avocado for healthy fats and vitamins, plus coconut water, spinach and a frozen banana to give it more of an ice-cream consistency.  I write the date on everything when I freeze it so I can make sure I eat the oldest things first – little tip there.smoothie ingredients 2-5-14 It was good but not quite enough.green smoothie 2-5-14 So in the evening I had fish and chips.  Cranbrook fish shop does make amazing fish and chips.  I try to not eat any batter but even so, I am not kidding myself that fish with tartare sauce and chips is good for you.  It was very nice though!fish and chips 2-5-14 I woke up this morning to a beautiful Spring day and had bacon with an egg and a large tomato.  Week one of the plan asks you to give up bread which is why the egg is on the plate.  I decided to do week one again as I don’t feel ready to move on to week 2 yet.egg bacon and tomatoes I spent the morning in Battle which has a magnificent Abbey which is maintained by English Heritage.Battle Abbey 1 Next to the Abbey is this charming 15th Century building with a cafe in it.Pilgrim's Rest in sunshine Pilgrim’s Rest, so called because the pilgrims who travelled to the Abbey were able to rest here.Pilgrim's Rest close up I rested here too.inside Pilgrims That was our little table.table by window We did try these cosy chairs but decided it would have been a challenge to eat here.chairs by fire Our little table had a view of the Abbey.View of Abbey We both had a very good soup made with spinach, butternut squash and lentils.Harvey at lunch It was served with bread which I left.  Harvey enjoyed it.  Apparently white bread is “cool”! They offered cheese with it so I added the cheese to mine and it was delicious.  My only criticism is that it was served in such a small bowl and there was no bread choice.  A large bowl would have been better and an option of brown bread.soup in small bowl Pilgrim’s Rest does serve amazing cakes which are displayed on the counter and I eventually succumbed.  I had a scone, thinking it was the best choice as it has less sugar than a cake but I forgot the jam had sugar.  So I failed with no sugar and no white carbs but I did enjoy it.cream tea at Pilgrim's rest

I am off out for a curry tonight with Sally in Sevenoaks.  That will help me relax and when I get up tomorrow, I can focus on eating a lot of plant food.  And gardening.  And relaxing.  Enjoy your weekend.

Quick and Easy

3 meals and one snack today, all of which were quick and easy.  I worked from home as there was a Tube strike which didn’t effect me directly but the people I work with were unable to get in so stayed home too. What a long day!  I started work at 5:30 am and finished just after 10 pm – so much to do.

I did manage a bit of time to check out the veggie patch.  It beckoned to me as I stood in my kitchen.

ink wells The radishes are beginning to look like radishes!

Planning Paid Off

I tried really hard yesterday to plan for the week ahead so I had plenty of healthy and sugar free meals and snacks to hand.  It worked well today.  I ate some delicious food but didn’t have to prepare any of it, just reheat or get out of the fridge.  My forward planning really paid off.

For breakfast I took a portion of coco-nutty-granola with raspberries and natural yogurt (unsweetened) in to work.granola raspberries and yogurtI just love that cereal and it was perfect with the raspberries and yogurt.Breakfast 28-4-14 Lunch was a combination of Saturday evening’s stir fried rice and prawns and Sunday’s bulgar wheat with roasted vegetables.lunch 28-4-14 2 We have a microwave at work which I rarely use but it was handy today.  I didn’t heat the prawns in the microwave as I was worried they may turn rubbery.  Instead I poked them in to the rice as soon as it came out of the microwave and they became warm in the steam.  It was very good and reheated perfectly.lunch 28-4-14 1 For supper we had bolognaise sauce which was full of veggies.  Harvey had his with spaghetti and I had mine with asparagus which I steamed over the pan cooking the pasta.asparagus and bolognaise It was a modest sized bowl of bolognaise and I was still peckish afterwards so I had 2 Dr Karg’s with Cambazola (a delicious cheese, like a Brie with blue threads in it).2 Karg's

So I am pleased with today as I didn’t break any of the week 1 ‘I Quit Sugar’ rules.   All my food was homemade (apart from the crackers), nutritous and delicious.
