All About The Veg

I started the day with a simple smoothie; banana, mixed frozen berries, sprouted sunflower seeds and almond milk.  Not bad.

I spent the morning at the Sissinghurst Smallholders Fair, held in the grounds of Sissinghurst Castle.

There were stallholders there giving advice and selling livestock and equipment you may want if you are a smallholder.  These little piglets are 3 weeks old.

And these ones are only 1 and a half weeks old.  So cute.  Harvey wanted one!

There was a bar set up in the open barn

and a farmers market set up in the old granary.  This is such a beautiful building.

I have never been up here before.

Inside I was struck by this lovely photo of a man on stilts setting up the wires for the hops to grow up.

They had some really interesting speakers lined up, including Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs fame but he was not speaking until 3 hours after we arrived and there was not enough to keep us amused for that long so we headed home.  James did pop back to hear Kevin later on as your entrance fee let you go in and out but I stayed at home.

I wanted to cook something with my freshly cropped onions.

My family seem to have an aversion to using up jars once they have been opened so I used these, with a jar of passatta to make the base sauce for a ratatouille.

Ratatouille

Ingredients (serves 6)

  • 2 tbsps oil
  • 1 large/2 medium onions
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 4 small aubergines, sliced
  • 3 courgettes, sliced
  • 2 peppers, sliced
  • 1 large jar of passatta
  • 2 tbsp tomato concentrate (or red pesto!)
  • Salt and pepper
    Red kidney beans

Method

  • Fry the onions and garlic
  • Add the aubergine, courgettes and peppers and fry until soft

  • Mix the passatta and tomato concentrate and stir in to the vegetables until warmed through
  • Season to taste
  • Either slowly bake in the oven on a low heat, or cook in a slow cooker for about 4 hours on low

I put mine in to a slow cooker and added a can of red kidney beans for protein.

Lunch was all picked from the garden – first tomatoes of the year 🙂

With some Stilton and salad cream.

My vegetable beds are bare :-(.  I haven’t done very well with succession planting this year and then having harvested the onions and shallots and cleared out the brassicae, there is too much bare earth.  So I replanted.

I planted some “winter lettuce’ which apparently grow through the winter, 2 other types of lettuce, rocket, corn salad and radishes, all of which say on the packet, they can be sown until September.  So I am feeling quite confident about those.  I also tried some spinach as I am sure I was successful last year when I sowed it late.  I also tried 2 varieties of dwarf green beans. I read last week that if we have an Indian summer, they can grow in time.  They are easy to sow so I tried them.  I feel better about the bare earth now as it is no longer empty but instead is full of promise.

These beans are doing well, despite the battle I am losing with the weeds all around them.

Dinner was fantastic.  To go with the ratatouille I did potatoes baked with garlic and rosemary.  Wow, they were good.  And oh yes, it all came from the garden 🙂

New Potatoes with Rosemary and Garlic

Ingredients

  • New potatoes
  • Garlic
  • Rosemary
  • Salt
  • Olive oil

Method

  • Heat oven to 180 ° C
  • Scrub potatoes and cut so they are even sizes
  • Strip the rosemary from the stalk and roughly chop
  • Pour some oil in to the base of a roasting tray.
  • Crush the garlic and mix in to the oil
  • Add the potatoes, rosemary and salt and mix so all the potato is well coated in oil
  • Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes

This dinner was all about the vegetables and all four of us loved it.  To go with the ratatouille were some carrots, yellow and green beans.  All freshly picked from the garden.

4 empty plates were testament to how delicious this was.  And so healthy too.

This is an amazing time of year for produce from the garden.  I am completely enjoying it and delighted my family are too.

In The Garden Today ……

What an incredibly gorgeously sunny and hot day.  I was out there first thing today, deciding what to do about my vegetables.  I decided to chuck the lot.  I had so many caterpillars, that even overnight, they had decimated my broccoli and were well on track to eat all the kale too.  I was very disappointed to lose the purple stemmed and veined kale.  I will grow it again next year and make a point of going out with my glasses on more often to check for caterpillars!  Thanks to Laura and Stella for your advice on how to prevent the pests.

Harvey came out to help as the garden was full of caterpillars.  It was like a Hammer House of Horrors out there!! We pulled the brassicas and put them in the recycling bin.  It really was a horror film – they kept on coming!

The marigolds I planted didn’t do much to repel the caterpillar laying butterflies!

Thank you by the way, to those of you who tried to identify my lovely pink flowers.  According to James they are lobelias!

As it was such  lovely day, the boys decided to go to the beach.  Very unusually for me, I declined.  I actually turned down 2 beach invitations this weekend, because I am overwhelmingly exhausted.  I have worked very hard lately and been away for the past few weekends so I just wanted to be at home.

Before heading off to London for the day, Lara made pancakes and bacon for breakfast :-).  I may have had more pancakes than this…. and more bacon and maple syrup 😦

So back to the garden.  Having removed all the brassicae,  the onions and shallots were more apparent.  I knew the onions were ready but I couldn’t really see the shallots under all the kale.  Now I can !

These onions look amazing and I am looking forward to cooking with them.

I had such a lovely day.  I usually hate it when I am not with my children but today I needed some peace and quiet and an opportunity to do what I wanted, when I wanted, without doing it for other people or how and when others wanted it.  I am never alone at home and today, I do confess I enjoyed it.

I picked and brushed the mud off the onions.  I have never grown them before and am really chuffed with these.

Then the shallots.

These took ages.   But I piled them up and sat in one of my favourite parts of the garden, and gently brushed off the mud and laid them in the trug.  I enjoyed the scent of the magnolia and sweet was and the sound of birdsong.  The beer was cold and refreshing and there was no time schedule to stick to.  There are definitely worse chores!

Ta daa!

Check out my vegetable baskets 🙂

I was full all day from those pancakes and didn’t eat anything else until early evening.  For supper I decided to have a juice I had seen on  Choosing Raw.  I have dabbled with many ways of eating healthily. There is so much advice and information available and it can be confusing.  But it does seem logical to me to eat raw food and I always feel so good when I do eat raw food.  I need to have more.

Thank you Gena for this delicious Beetroot and Berry Smoothie.  (This colour has not been enhanced at all!).

This tasted so much better than I was expecting.  I picked 4 baby beetroots from the garden, plus raspberries, an orange, 4 dates and almond milk.  I cut the stems and root from the beetroots and peeled the hard bits of peel but left the rest.  I put in all the raspberries and the peeled orange with the pitted dates and milk.  Blitzed until smooth.

I recommend you try this – it is surprisingly good.  I could have eaten/drunk it over and over again.  The balance of sharp and sweet, earthiness and lightness was perfect.  I will be having this many times over.  It even matches my favourite flower of the moment 🙂

Having consumed all this nutrition, I popped down to the George with Jane for a couple of glasses of wine and have come home and scoffed lots of chocolate.  Oh well, I am not perfect.  I had a lovely time though  – thanks Jane 🙂

Who Is Eating The Vegetables?

I worked from home today which was a huge relief as I was so tired I really appreciated a lie in.  Having commuted downstairs and in to the dining room I worked for a bit and then made a lovely thick smoothie with 1 small mango, half a nectarine, some natural yogurt and a surprise ingredient – sunflower seeds sprouts.  These are my favourite of all sprouts.

They make the smoothie really nutty and substantial.  This one worked out really well and was thick like a custard.  Delicious.

Lara made me lunch so I could keep working- chicken and goats cheese salad.

After lunch I went for a stroll around the garden.  I happened to have my glasses perched on my head so I was able to see who is munching my vegetables.

These bad boys.

Hundreds of them!!!!  I have never seen so many.  These guys are eating the broccoli

and these little critters are munching their way through my kale :-(.

What can I do about them?  Any ideas?

After work I sat outside in the lovely warm evening air and enjoyed an amaretto on ice while I researched a holiday.  Such a pleasant way to start a weekend.

Lara made dinner too – was a perfect daughter.  Salmon marinaded in maple syrup and soy sauce (recipe is on the recipe page) with rice noodles and a lovely selection of vegetables.

I made a very easy dessert of apple and raisin pie.  It was so easy.  I soaked some raisins in amaretto for about 2 hours.  Then I put the oven on to 200, buttered a large pie dish, added the soaked raisins and 3 large cooking apples which I peeled and sliced.  I added about 2 tbsp demerera sugar, topped it with puff pastry which I brushed with milk.  Finally I sprinkled another 1 tbsp sugar on the top and cooked it for about 25 minutes.  It was lovely.  Naughty but lovely and so simple to make.

So here’s to a good weekend.

Hop Exchange

I went on a little detour to the office in the morning and found this lovely building.

I have never seen it before and having found it, I discovered it was built in 1868 and was used as an exchange where hops (used to make beer) were traded.

The entrance is grand and has some wonderful sculpture above the door.

I took a peek through the large wooden doors.

And then stole a peek inside. Not a great photo as it is shot through glass but you get the idea.  The floor is tiled and in its day, when it had a domed glass ceiling, it would have been a stunning building.  Now it is used as a party and corporate venue.

This is becoming a daily habit!  Sometimes they pour the coffee with a leaf pattern but today I had a heart 🙂

Smoked salmon bagel to go with my coffee.  Not diet friendly but I really enjoyed it.

Wheatgrass is good when you are feeling tired.

Wheatgrass in a green smoothie is even better.

This is the green deluxe.

Little treat – vanilla pecan ice-cream.  Yum!   Naughty but yum !

I had a delicious salad for dinner.

I picked some lettuce, chard leaves, spring onion and my first carrot of the year.  Quite straight for a homegrown one so I am rather proud of that.

Lara cooked me some bacon and I also had some blue cheese

Added those to tomato, sugar snap peas

Plus grapes.

Delicious.  What did you have for dinner?

Another Day, Another Dollar

Deja vue!

I couldn’t resist this cute little sour cherry granola.  It is soooooo good.

Lunch was a quick sandwich with an unidentifiable filling!  I went out late and grabbed a sandwich without checking what it was and having eaten it, I was still not sure!  I did take 10 minutes today to eat it outside, in the sunshine, looking at the river.  Washed down with an orange juice.

I was home by 7:30pm and it was still sunny and warm.  I enjoyed a little potter about in the garden and being outside in the fresh air.  These are some of my favourite flowers of the moment and I have not touched up the colour at all.  They really are this bright pink.  Any ideas what they are called?

I pulled up some potatoes and boiled them.  I was meant to make a broccoli, mushroom and onion omelette but it ended up as a bit of a scramble.  So not a great photo but it tasted good.

Followed by some natural probiotic yogurt with passionfruit.

I am very tired tonight.  Work was tough and it wears me out.  Still, another day done, another dollar earned 🙂

Back to London

After a 3 week break I went back to the London office today.  To celebrate, I started the day with a Monmouth flat white.

And then popped next door for some breakfast – a sour cherry granola.

I love cherries and I really like that slightly artificial cherry flavour too.  This was yummy but I suspect it had too much sugar in it.  It was very small so not a complete disaster and it kept me going until lunch time at 2pm.  It really was small.  Monmouth only do coffees in one size and they are smaller than any other coffee shop.

I had a late lunch today of a chicken soup and a ham sandwich from Pret.  No time for a photo – yes, I am back in London.  Back to rushed and late lunches.  It was even better to get home tonight though.  Back to my lovely family and my gorgeous daughter who had cooked a wonderful dinner.  Chicken with steamed veg and a small amount of spaghetti.  It was all very garlicky so I will stink tomorrow.  This was our first dinner with my home grown garlic :-).  It was really good.  So much better than Supermarket garlic.

Another smelly addition to my house are these beautiful flowers.

I was sent them from work as a thank you for working so hard.  I really like roses and lilies so I was very chuffed.

So now the Olympics has finished in London, what am I supposed to do in the evening?  I seem to have forgotten !

The Fourth Decade

As I am nearing the end of my fourth decade, my little sister, Holly,  has just started hers.  This weekend was all about helping her celebrate.  Which means it was an excuse for my lovely  family to get together.

We gathered on Friday to celebrate Harry’s 12th birthday and continued celebrating all weekend.  So much to celebrate and be grateful for.  This all took place in and near beautiful Chichester, where Holly lives.

This amazing structure is known as “The Crown” and sits at “The Cross”.

We had a sunny and sandy morning at West Wittering beach.

We set up camp in the sand dunes and variously relaxed, chatted, swam, read the paper,

sunbathed,

and explored.

Holly’s birthday party began in the afternoon.  In honour of the Olympics and being practical and inclusive of the vast number of children her friends and family have, we had afternoon tea with Olympic themed activities laid on.

Wellies were wanged, races were run, tricycles were tricycled non-stop for about 8 hours by little legs.  The volleyball was always popular with some rather chaotic teams and rules.

We took time out to enjoy a cream tea.

I am hopeless at remembering to take photos at parties.  With so many lovely people to talk to (my sisters and their families, Grandpa Ian and my cousins and their families) I forgot all about the camera.  This is the only photo I managed of the people at yesterday’s event!

The afternoon morphed in to the evening when we had a barbecue and the children kept playing and playing.  The party ended with a live band.

These 2 cousins had an amazing weekend together, as we all did.

I started today with granola, pumpkin seeds, mixed berries and yogurt.

My food consumption over the weekend would not win a healthy eating award but it was not too disastrous.  After breakfast we all went to Holly’s for morning coffee and another catch up.

Quite incredible how we all have so much to say 🙂

At home I made a very simple supper.  Partly because I was too tired to do anything else and partly because our cupboards were bare. Vegetable rice

and Thai green curry.

It hit the spot.

So I hope my little sister has a wonderful fourth decade.  We certainly enjoyed helping her make a good beginning to it.

THE LONG GOOD THURSDAY

I had a day off yesterday – first one in ages.  What a day we had – we left home at 6:30 am and  returned at 11 pm.  One very long and very good Thursday.

But before Thursday was Wednesday and I was pretty good.  Healthy breakfast of nectarine, melon, yogurt, sunflower seeds and almonds.

Yummy lunch of salad, orange, rice and cottage cheese with mixed sprouts.

Our lovely neighbours came over for supper.  I can’t believe these lovely girls/young women were only 4 and 7 years old when we moved in next door!  How time has flown.

Up and at ’em on Thursday.

We arrived in Slough, made famous by The Office. As a woman who works in an office, I can confirm, every office has a David Brent!

Then headed off to Eton Dorney for the canoe sprint.  We had great seats, the sun was shining and the view was lovely.

We were opposite the finishing line.  Go Aussies for gold 🙂

We love Team GB.

It was all over too quickly but the day was not over.  We had a lovely potter round Eton and then Windsor.  I have never been to either of these places before.  Thirsty work though.

We sat and treated ourselves to an afternoon tea at a traditional English hotel.

We had a table outside, in the shade, but on the street so we could watch the world go by. It was wonderful to sit and people watch.

James had a burger and chips instead.

Windsor is so old

and pretty.

It is most famous for its castle so we thought we would take a close look 🙂

Windsor Castle is the place the Queen calls home and she lives here most weekends.  It is also the place where she hosts state dinners and other special occasions, such as the Knights of the Garter events.  Most of the castle is 800 years old!  There was a beautiful garden in the middle.

We were lucky because everywhere open to the public was open (parts of the castle are often shut as it is a working castle in regular use by the Royal family) and it was not too busy.  It was also mercifully cool inside the buildings.  We had no idea there were so many different buildings that made up the castle.

We all loved it and spent hours, slowly walking round, listening to the superb audio guide and just taking time to sit and take it all in.  Our history really is phenomenal.

Attention!

Mirror, mirror, on the wall ….. this was actually 2 different soldiers.

As Harvey said, this really is “the Royal mail” (it is a post man emptying the letter box):-).  Also, check out the crown on top of the lantern – love it!

Besides the Royal family, lots of people live inside the Castle walls.  I rather fancy this little pad and cute courtyard garden.

We had a wonderful afternoon in Windsor Castle, thank you for opening your home to us, your Majesty.

Where to next?  Helen and Jeremy’s for a delicious supper.

Helen made a lovely Supersalad, which had squash, courgettes, lettuce, tomatoes,  green lentils and Feta.  Plus we had roast chicken and penne and bolognese sauce.  It was delicious.

What a long and amazing Thursday we had.  I definitely made the most of my day off.

Today was back to the grindstone.  Very much so actually as I put in an 11 hour day and then drove to Chichester to join my family.  Tonight we celebrated my nephew Harry’s birthday.

Tomorrow, my sister Holly’s.  Looking forward to this weekend.  I hope you have a good one too.

Short and Sweet

I was working in the Gillingham office today, which is about a 45 minute drive away so I had plenty of time (i.e. no excuses) to prepare a healthy breakfast and lunch.

I got out my little tupperware pots and in to the breakfast one went 1/3 cup of oats, a splash of milk, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 2 tbsp natural yogurt and 1 tbs flax seed oil.

Topped with some melon.

Lunch was a really healthy salad of cauliflower, broccoli and carrots, which I chop up very small.

Plus tomatoes, grapes and celery.

Then a handful of mixed sprouted seeds and beans and raisins.  I dressed it with salt and pepper,  1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp maple syrup.  Delicious.

I was home from work by 6 pm and decided that I wanted a quick and easy supper so I wasn’t spending the evening cooking and clearing up.

I was very hungry when I got home so while I was thinking about what to eat, I had a slice of bread with cheddar and pickle.

I decided to have sardines on toast, which is nutritious and cheap.  After the excessive spending on eating out last week, I need to be more economical this week so Harvey and had a tin of these each on one slice of wholemeal.

Sardines on toast.  Easy.

I was going to have a nectarine afterwards but someone small has eaten them all!  That same someone who has just asked “how come none of the ball throwers are pretty?”.  Yes, we are watching the shot put.

So that’s all for tonight.  Keeping it short and sweet.
