Long Time No See

Hello blog readers, long time no see!  I have been having a very busy time recently with fun things and work things and then I had camera trouble.  But here I am with a quick round up of some of the fun I have had lately.  Not much food in this one so if you read this for the food only you may want to delete now.

Last week 2 friends, who have no connection with each other except I know them both, one called Maryam and one called Marion, turned 50 on the same day and both their husbands arranged a surprise birthday party for them.  I wanted to go to both parties but as I had accepted Maryam’s invitation first I went to her celebration which was at Floridita which was conveniently close to my office.  On the way I stopped in to a colleague’s leaving drinks – this was never going to be a healthy and early to bed evening!  Floridita was excellent.  They have a lot of Cuban music usually but on this occasion they had a really good band called ‘High on Heels, which was an all girl band playing a variety of wood and brass instruments with an electronic background.  I loved it.  I also liked the Mojitos and endless champagne!Floridita staircase It was great to catch up with some of the wonderful ladies I began working with in 1990 and have known ever since.  This is Olivia.Z and O Julia and Armundo.A J and Z A, J, A and O the birthday girl Maryam and Alison.  We really missed Kath, Katherina and Marie who were unable to come.  Thank you Maryam for inviting me to such a lovely birthday celebration.Maryam and ALison On Friday night I went to the local pub for the birthday drinks Marion arranged.  I was so tired after the previous night I was sure it would be a fairly quiet night for me.  Wrong!!!  I saw lots of lovely people, some of whom I haven’t seen for years.  It was an excellent evening and as Marion only lives over the road from me it seemed rude to not join her and Clare for a few more gins when the pub was fed up with us all.  I think you can see what kind of munchies we had too – not of the carrot and celery stick variety!  I did enjoy myself 🙂Marion and Claire On Saturday morning, a mere few hours after my weary head briefly graced my pillow with its presence, I was up and down on the South coast to drop Harvey off at an event. I decided to go along to Hastings, which I have never visited before.  I would usually enjoy choosing some very fresh fish but not that time.Hastings 19 Hastings 18 Hastings 17 Hastings 16 Hastings 15 After tottering walking along the beach for a while and enjoying the sea air, I turned inland in search of The Old Town which I heard was very charming.Hastings 14 I always enjoy an information board.Hastings 13 So now I know that these huts are shaped as they are to accommodate fishing nets and lines.Hastings 12 I have never been to Hastings before and I read no guide books or know anything about it but I turned up a street which drew me to it because of the extraordinary range of house styles I could see.Hastings 11 It was absolutely delightful.Hastings 10 Intriguing little alley ways.Oxford Terrace hastings What a beautiful door.Hastings 9 Hastings 8 blue pots grey foliage Hastings 7 Hastings 6 seagulls are drowned sailors This house was built in the 15th Century!Hastings 5 Look how close to the street the windows on this house are!Hastings 3 The houses on the other side of the street are much higher.Hastings 2 The sunshine and sea air helped clear my head and I really enjoyed strolling around Hastings.  I was finally ready for breakfast.Hastings 1 I enjoyed 2 eggs Benedict in Petit Fi and a peaceful read of my book. eggs hollandaise x 2Having been out all day I was out again, for another birthday surprise arranged by another husband for his wife.  There are some very thoughtful husbands out there.  We were out on Saturday to celebrate Fiona’s birthday.  We went to a Neil Diamond tribute act.  He was very talented and it was a hilarious evening, not all for the right reasons but again, it was lovely to catch up with some good friends/cousins.
A Diamond Experience After all the excess I made an effort on Sunday and made a mung dal and vegetable curry.vegetables for curry It was not good enough to share the recipe but I ate another portion tonight so it is edible but not particularly enjoyable.vegetable and mung dal curry

I have drink too much, eaten too much and exercised too little.  I work close to Europe’s largest book shop so I popped in last week to buy a couple of books I hope will help me.  I have been too busy to read them but am going to start tonight.  I am going to give up sugar and get back in the losing weight zone.

Motivation

I have been so busy this week with working hard and socialising too much and in between times being a Mum which means dieting has taken a bit of a back seat.  It shouldn’t do but it has because when I am tired and/or stressed I am weak willed.  Lately I have been stressed and tired so not focusing properly on dieting.

It has not all been a disaster.  This was a lovely breakfast – porridge made with coconut water and cooked with toasted coconut with a heaped tsp peanut butter.  Really yummy.Porridge with coconut I have been loving working in Central London.  Yesterday I went to the Japan Centre.Japan Centre It was a supermarket full of Japanese products.  I have never been in there before and I was not sure what most of the products are for either but I am intrigued to try some of them.Japan Centre produce I had walked down to Piccadily Circus to get to Wholefoods Market.  I still can’t believe I work just 10 – 15 minutes walk away from such a famous place.Piccadily Circus Hello Eros.Eros I selected a mixed salad bar which you pay for per 100g.  I tried a tiny bit of all their grain based salads and then added a falafel (not very good – too dry), some humous, sunflower seeds, pecans and green leaves.lunch 4-3-14 As usual I ate at my desk which was fine because I would rather spend my lunch hour walking around.Whole Foods salad Most of the salads were tasty and it is good to know this is a reasonable walk away.lunch 4-3-14 1 The coconut and strawberries were good to munch on during the afternoon.  Despite that, “dinner” was a disaster; 3 glasses of wine and a packet of biscuits!coconut and strawberries Today was a stunningly sunny morning.  It was very cold and frosty but sunny with a bright blue sky which is one of my favourite types of weather.   I was in London early and enjoyed seeing the sun beginning to glow over Trafalgar Square.Traf Sq Such a beautiful building and it was lovely to be there early before it was very busy.Early Traf Sq Confession time.  This has been my recent major weakness.  Monmouth Coffee Shop sells amazing coffee with whole fat milk and the best almond croissants on the planet.  Literally the entire planet.  They are crisp yet chewy, buttery and sweet and oh so moreish.  So very moreish.  I must stay away as this is not a healthy breakfast plus it must has millions of calories.Momnouth almond croissant I was out looking for birthday presents today.  I have 2 friends with special birthdays tomorrow and being in this part of London makes going out shopping for gifts a real pleasure.  A 5 minute walk from the office brings me to Covent Garden.Covent Garden Tube 1 I found a good card shop but returned to Monmouth St for the gifts.Neal St There are so many charming streets to walk around I almost get over excited and can’t choose where to go.st near Covent Garden This is a fab’ find.  Timber Yard is exactly my kind of a coffee/breakfast/lunch place.  Good food, relaxed vibe and somewhere you want to sit and relax in.Timber Yard I did really badly today.  I had a caramel brownie as well as a fattening sandwich.Sweet goodies at Timber Yard It was very attractively wrapped.wrapped sandwich Croque Monsieur, eaten at my desk.  Naughty but nice.Croque Monsieur So what can I do to get my diet mojo back?  I can do this.  I can make myself a promise that when I have lost a stone I can go in to this fabulous shop and buy myself an outfit, or two.  I could buy practically the entire shop as I like nearly everything inside.   I obviously can’t afford it all and have no need for that many clothes but to motivate myself, I can choose an entire outfit which can include shoes, socks or tights and a scarf to accessorise what ever I choose to buy.

This is the window of Gudrun Sjoden , a Swedish designer’s shop.  The goodies inside are mainly clothing but there is a homewares range too.  I love the organic cotton fabrics, funky patterns and colours which range from very bright to muted.  I  REALLY want to buy things in here so when I am a stone lighter I will be skipping in one lunch time to choose.  In the meantime, I bought 2 gifts for my 2 friends in here.  Stockholm Shop

I must remember to hand them over!

Back In The Raw Zone

I am rather pleased with that title.  If I ever open the healthy cafe I would love to own one day I may call it ‘The Raw Zone’ 🙂

I am sitting at home in front of a roaring fire slurping homemade chicken soup out of a very large mug and feeling rather pleased with myself.  I have been very good today.  Very, very good.

It began last night when I took ‘Raw Living’ to bed to help inspire me to eat well today.  It worked.Raw Living I was working from home so I made a huge smoothie for breakfast with tofu, frozen blackcurrants and raspberries, coconut water, maca powder, Spirulina and Matcha.  I wanted to add in some superfoods.smoothie ingredients 3-3-14 It was smooth, creamy and slightly fruity.  A perfect start to the day.

333 calories.

I have really struggled with sugar cravings today but I resisted them.  Hurrah!

Breakfast Alternatives

When my menfolk are responsible for getting themselves up and the littlest of the two on the school bus, breakfast tends to be forgotten until they are in the car which means someone special goes hungry.  So I have been experimenting with a healthier version of a flapjack or similar.  I know that it is much healthier to have something like eggs or a low sugar smoothie or porridge but that is just not a realistic option.  So I made something palatable and easy to grab and go.  So I don’t eat them, these cookies are individually wrapped and frozen. The night before they are taken out and placed on the side ready to be enjoyed the next day.

I have tried to create a sugar free home but this is my concession to our busy lifestyles. I adapted my recipe from the Oat and Raisin Biscuit recipe in ‘The Great British Bake Off How To Bake’.  I replaced the butter with coconut butter * and the sugar with coconut palm sugar.  I am going to try using less sugar next time as these were very sweet.  I also switched wholemeal flour with some baking powder for the self-raising flour in Mary Berry’s recipe.  I didn’t have enough raisins and Harvey wanted to use some butterscotch chips so I added those.  I also added nuts and seeds for protein.  So actually my recipe bore little resemblance to the original!

* coconut butter is different to oil as it is the blended flesh of the coconut rather than the oil.

cookies with oats, raisins and nuts

Oat and Nut Biscuits

Ingredients (makes 30)

  • 125 g coconut butter
  • 150 g coconut palm sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp milk (I used soya milk but any would do)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 100 g wholemeal flour + 1 level tsp baking powder
  • 75 g raisins
  • 150 g porridge oats
1 cup of mixed nuts and seeds, chopped (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C
  2. Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until pale and fluffy with either a wooden spoon or electric mixer
  3. In another bowl beat the egg with the milk and vanilla until just combined and then beat in to the butter and sugar mixture
  4. Add the flour, raisins, oats and nuts
  5. Put heaped teaspoonfuls of the mixture on to greased baking sheets, spaced well apart
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until lightly browned round the edges
  7. Remove from the oven, leave to stand for 2-3 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely

I tried but failed to resist these.  They are soft and a little bit chewy with crunchy edges and nutty bits.  I was very pleased with these as was the Little Fella.Oat and Nut cookiesTo save me from myself and some cookies for the boy, they are now wrapped up and in the freezer, ready to be enjoyed for breakfast.  Yes, they contain sugar but they also contain healthy fats from the coconut, nuts and seeds, protein and slow release carbs from the Jumbo oats.  He only has this 2 or 3 times a week so on balance, I think this is acceptable.
Oat and Nut Breakfast Cookies

Apart from 2 3 cookies today, I did quite well.  A very modest sized bowl of porridge with half a banana and 1 tbsp peanut butter for breakfast.

porridge with banana and peanut butter A very large salad for lunch with half an avocado and 100 g ham (no added sugar).ham saladRoast chicken with butternut squash, carrots and tenderstem broccoli for supper.  No gravy and I didn’t eat the skin on the chicken.

Chicken dinner 2-3-14

So apart from the cookies, a good and healthy day of eating but no walking today as I was busy during the day.  I should have made time and that will be a focus for me next week.

Wild Life

I am certainly making good use of my weekly train ticket as I went up to London again on Saturday.  I took my little wild life to see some other wild life.

My Wildlife

First though we began the day with a healthy breakfast of egg with tomatoes, spinach, onions and mushrooms with coriander.  Yummy.Breakfast 1-3-14 Followed by a walk with the dogs in the still wet and muddy woods. In the woods 1-3-14 We went up to London to meet James’ sister Anne and family, to go to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the wonderful Natural History Museum.  Entry to the exhibition is £12 adult and £6 child and it is advisable to pre-book.  Entry to the museum though is free and there is so much to see it is worth visiting.  In the 3 hours we were there before going to the photography exhibition, we only saw a small amount of what is on offer.  Another bonus is the beautiful building it is in.

Outside NHM I felt ashamed that I hadn’t brought Harvey here before, especially when I observed that he was so interested in everything.  We will definitely be coming back.NHM entry We had a bite to eat in their excellent cafe.  I had a chicken club sandwich on brown with a latte. Not the lowest calorie choice but I was relieved I resisted the very tempting cakes.sandwich in LHM We then queued for the dinosaur exhibits.NHMTime went really quickly and it was a pleasure to be in this magnificent hall.
NHM ceiling The architecture here is stunning. In the NHM B and Anne The dinosaur exhibit is well worth visiting.  It is free but you have to queue because it is so popular.Dinosaurs It is well worth it though.T RexYou are not allowed to take photos in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition so we respected that.  It is excellent so go and see it if you can.  I would recommend going before the 5pm session though as we were a bit rushed at the end as the museum closes at 6pm.  I might be tempted to get first tickets of the day and hope it is not so crowded.

We headed off in to South Kensington and had a good curry at Shikara in Bute St.  Not diet friendly though despite the portions shown here as I also had a pint of Cobra, poppadoms with accompaniments, more of the main and quite a lot of probably the very best Peshwari Nan I have ever had.
Indian starter I did at least resist sweet things today and got a lot of walking in so not the worst day for eating recently by a long way.Indian 1-3-14 If you can, treat yourselves and go to see this fantastic exhibition.Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Loving London

Loving London 10 : dieting 0.

I have not managed to post many blogs recently.  partly because I have been very busy, both at work and socially and also because I have been eating some really bad things and not been in the dieting zone.  So here is a quick round up of some of the best or most interesting things I have seen this week.

I am enjoying walking round the West End.  Wednesday was particularly good as it was so sunny from very early.  It is very uplifting to step off the train and enjoy London in this glorious sunshine.clockThis is one of my favourite buildings; the Coliseum which is the home of the English National Opera.

Remember to look up when you walk around London or you will miss these beautiful sights.
top of the coliseum When you look down or along the street you see some unusual things, such as this white tank on Monmouth Street which was there one day, outside Monmouth Coffee.white tank I did eat some healthy meals, such as this black eye bean salad but meals such as these were in the minority this week.salad 26-2-14 But I had far too many of these.  Milky lattes and sometimes I enjoyed them with an almond croissant or even a brownie.

This latte was enjoyed in The Table which I had been recommended but never got round to trying when I was working at Bankside.  The coffee was definitely worth a trip.Table latte The huge cooked breakfast was great too.cooked breakfast at Table Yesterday I went to a part of London I have never been to before, even though it is so famous.  I have seen photos of Lady Justice so often but never stood before them.Top of Old Bailey This is the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, more usually known as the Old Bailey because of the name of the street it is on.Old Bailey Hear hear.Defend the children I was working for the day in an office directly opposite the courtroom.  I literally popped out for 5 minutes at lunch time to make a phone call and saw Rebekah Brooks walking past.  No surprise really since her trial is currently on at the Old Bailey but I was surprised nevertheless and in my haste to take a photo managed a series of very out of focus photos.  I don’t think I can give up my career and become a papp’!ebecca Brook Rebecca Brook I admire these cameramen and photographers who stand outside all day, in the cold and wet to bring us the pictures we have come to expect when we watch the news or read the papers.  I don’t admire the ones who intrude on people’s private lives by they way.Photographers waitig Central Criminal Court So quite an eventful day and I am pleased I now know where Old Bailey is as I have never walked up there before.City Police In the evening I went to Rebecca’s leaving drinks.  I will miss this lovely lady and her little dog, Beryl.  Annette and Rebecca I will also miss this charming and quirky house.Charming fire place With its cosy corners to sit and chat in.Cosy corner

But life moves on. Onwards, onwards, ever onwards so I wish you well Rebecca and Beryl.

I hope March brings a return to the resolve and determination with my diet I enjoyed in January but which mainly evaded me in February.

West End Girls

Today was my first day in our new office.  I was almost hyperventilating with excitement when I realised exactly where it was.  When I realised it was literally a few metres away from one of my favourite urban streets on the planet.

About a 3 minute walk brought me to Seven Dials 🙂Seven Dials Which is in the middle of my shopping Nirvana.  Even the stone in the road is attractive here.Sunny Monmouth St Yes, it’s Monmouth Street.  I absolutely love, love, love  Monmouth Street.Monmouth Street Feb 2014 I like the funky and unusual clothes shops – at least 2 of which sell things I can buy.  This could get expensive.Gudrun This was a disappointment.  A pop up chocolate shop.  I hope it pops down soon because I was lured in, given a free bar of chocolate and tempted to try others.  All very delicious but not the thing for a weak woman on a diet.Divine Chocolate I’ll stick to clothes and homeware shops as they have far fewer calories.Orla Kiely Beauty product shops are acceptable for lunch time shopping.  Can you see what is next to Kiehl’s?Kiehl's and Monmouth Monmouth Coffee Company !!!!!!  This is the one I discovered first (before the one in Borough Market) and I used to drop in on my way to classes when I was studying Nutritional Therapy.Monmouth Coffee Company I popped in for old time’s sake – it had to be done!Monmouth Coffee feb 2014I needed somewhere for lunch and wandered hopefully in to Neal’s Yard.  It is so bright and funky you can not fail to smile and feel cheery in here.

Neal's Yard and Wild Food Cafe I decided to try the Wild Food Cafe which ticks lots of boxes as it’s organic, has lots of raw and vegan foods and seems to be very fresh.  It only had a very limited menu and was expensive but I tried it anyway.  The staff were friendly and efficient and the cafe was bright and colourful but I had to get back to work so I ordered take out.Wild Food Cafe I would have enjoyed sitting in though.Wild Food Cafe in sunshineSprouted humous on sourdough with green salad.

germinated humous sourdough Then one of the best brownies I have ever had.Wild Food Brownie It was moist, dense, nutty and had an amazing fudgey topping.  Plus probably a squillion calories, particularly as it was a huge slice.Moist Brownie

This is meant to be a weight loss and getting healthy blog, not a blog about Zoe’s shopping aspirations and moist brownie addiction.  Well the weight loss has suffered a major setback although I have eaten some really healthy and delicious meals recently.

Such as a poached egg on spinach and tomato for breakfast yesterday.egg, spinach and fried tomatoes And the wonderful chicken soup I made with chicken, swede, carrots, split peas, onion, celery, leeks and parsley.chicken soup ingredients Cooked for hours in the slow cooker.  I then blended 2/3 of it to create a thick soup but left lots of chunks of chicken and vegetables, plus I added sweetcorn near the end of the cooking time.making chicken soup It was really delicious, although my photo does not do it justice.Nourishing chicken soupUnfortunately I have also eaten LOADS and loads of really naughty things.  I have been socialising too much which is not an excuse as everywhere I have been I could have either abstained or eaten a healthy option. But I rarely did.

For example on Sunday I went to Sally’s for lunch.  She had made a delicious butternut squash casserole which I could have had with salad but I had a sausage and then seconds as it was all so lovely.butternut sausage and salad For dessert I could have had fresh fruit but I didn’t.  Well I did, but I also had roulade.roulade and berries And chocolate cake !chocolate cake and rouladeI missed getting weighed last week as I opted to go to the pub with Jackie and Stella instead which was great fun but naughty.  I knew I would have put on weight last week so I didn’t go.  This week I knew I had put more on again but I made myself go.  It was bad, really bad.  I put 6 pounds on which is stupid.  Really stupid.  I have eaten too many sugary foods and done very little exercise.  I am going to put that right tomorrow by getting up earlier and walking before I get to work.  I am going to take food in too as I was doing well when I took my lunch and breakfast in.  This dieting lark is difficult!

A Few Busy Days

What a busy few days I have had.  I have been incredibly busy at work, making the most of the last couple of days in Bankside and enjoying socialising.

Thursday was my last day in the Bankside office and I made the most of being so close to Tate Modern by visiting it at lunch time.  It is an enormous building, much of which is left empty which is unusual, to be in so much space.Inside Tate Modern There was a big exhibition of Surrealism and I was delighted to see a Dali painting.Metamorphosis of Narcissus When I was a much younger woman, and we decorated university rooms and bedrooms with posters, many of my friends had a poster of this picture.  I didn’t have this one, I had ‘Sleep’ but seeing this painting brought back so many very happy memories of a time that suddenly seems so long ago.  I think this painting is fantastic and it seemed a real honour to be standing in front of it.  It is surprisingly small!Dali painting There was so much to see but so little time.Homework I will miss the views of Saint Paul’s but I am sure our new location will have a whole new panorama for me to enjoy.St Paul's from Tate Modern I whizzed in to Albion on the way back to the office.  I will miss this place.  It opened when I moved here and it has been a pleasure to see it becoming more and more popular.Albion from Tate side Roasted vegetable and chicken salad.  Delicious.Albion chicken mayo salad In the late afternoon I ran over to the lounge at Citizen M for a cup of tea with Gail.  It was too rushed but at least I managed to see her and enjoy being in this lovely lounge, albeit briefly,  before I left.lights Citizen MIn the evening I enjoyed a delicious pizza with my sister Lucy and her family.  We went to Mosaic, an Italian restaurant and Pizzeria in Archway which was excellent.
H, H and O I did weaken and enjoyed a huge and cheesey pizza.4 cheese pizza Since then I have eaten some extremely healthy meals such as this huge bowl of kale cooked with onions and mushrooms.bowl of kale and mushrooms Topped with some brown basmati rice and an omelette.egg and green veg Sardines with rice and raw vegetables.sardines and rice salad A smoothie made with mixed berries, cashew butter, coconut water, Maca powder and protein powder.smoothie 22-2-14 A very healthy lunch today made with brown Basmati rice, black eyed beans, yellow pepper, tomato, celery, carrot, parsley, basil and coriander.  No dressing, just salt, pepper and some chilli.lunch 22-2-14Unfortunately I have also eaten some cakes, chocolate and we had a curry for supper tonight.  I have put on a few pounds which I am disappointed about. I need to be in more and prepare meals and be less rushed and busy.  Next week is looking ridiculously busy too but I will do my best to eat well and exercise.

Bye Bye Borough

We are gearing up to move offices so this will be my last week in our current location.  I have worked on the South side of the river, near Borough Market and at Bankside for 2 years now.  I have become very fond of this part of London and will miss it but I am excited about new location too.

This is the part of Bankside I have been working in since August last year.

A Walk To Lyme Regis And Back

We were blessed with brilliant bright blue skies today.

Lucy's house Knowing where I would be having lunch I just had a clementine and a small apple before we set off for a walk in to Lyme Regis.walking down the Lane The cliffs have slipped in the storm.  Last week this was a road we could have driven along but a long section has dropped down at least a foot.  It is now closed to cars which must be inconvenient for the house that is situated at the end of the lane!boys by road drop A little way further and this part has slipped even more.next to landslide This was level.Harry by landslide Look at this beautiful view and blue skies.  It was fantastic to be outside in the sunshine.  Walking in the sunshine is always enjoyable at this time of year but more so after the recent storms.walking to beach footpath sign It was just over a mile to walk down to the Cobb.  All the debris was still there.  Hard to believe the waves hurled this concrete post about.concrete post on cobb All these pebbles were hurled from the beach on the other side of the wall.pebbles on cobb 2 All these pebbles were thrown over the wall.pebbles on Cobb pebbles in Lyme harbour There’s a couple of likely lads.H and H playing football They have played football all the way from the house, down to the beach and now along the beach.H and H on LR beach The rest of us couldn’t stop looking at all the trees and other debris washed up by the storms.M's on beach We walked along the beach to the other end of the town.LR beach Feb 2014I wonder where all these trees came from?

It was beautiful walking along and being outside today and I loved it all.  After our walk and with it being early afternoon, it was time to eat.beach front Lyme

Destination, the Town Mill Bakery.  One of my favourite places to eat in the world.  Not the healthiest unfortunately but for superb baked products, in a convivial atmosphere you can not find better.entrance to Town Mill Bakery

We walked back up the High Street and up the long hill to get home.  That gave me a chance to look at the lovely houses in detail, that I usually drive past.  This is the door to the “mushroom house”.door to mushroom house This is the mushroom house.mushroom house My walking boots are rather old and showing it.  They are cracked and probably need replacing now.  They have taken me for many miles and to many beautiful places.  Few lovelier than Lyme Regis which has now added sand to them.muddy and sandy bootsMy lovely weekend ended with a roast chicken dinner.  My Uncle and Aunty joined us and it was hard to leave.  Thank you Lucy and Trevor for such a wonderful weekend.
