Champagne and Curry

Having juice fasted for 2 days I was looking forward to some food to chew at lunch time but first, there was a lot more hot water and juice to get through.

Near my office is Pure ( http://pure-madeforyou.co.uk ), which sells freshly squeezed juice.  Phew!  Such a relief as I had not had time to squeeze my own before leaving for work.

Pure, Shaftesbury Ave Pure packaging I bought 250ml of Applebreezer (apple, lemon and ginger) to substitute for the ginger shot and 500ml of Hail The Kale (kale, carrot, beetroot, celery, mint and lemon).Pure juice At lunch time I went to Wholefoods Market in Piccadilly Circus.  First food since Saturday night !!!  I had a selection of goodies from the salad bar; chicken, salmon, goat’s cheese, humous, black beans, pecans, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, basmati rice salad and as many different veggies as I could fit in the box. It was a pleasure to eat.Wholefoods salad 3-6-14 In the evening I went out with some of the local lovelies to celebrate Suzanne’s combined 18th and 22nd.  We celebrated with a curry at Jumeira in Staplehurst and champagne.  Yes, folks, this is how we roll in this part of the world; beer may be the traditional accompaniment to a cuzza but we quaffed champers.

I had pistachio chicken which was fabulous.  Plus a mixed dry vegetable curry, spinach and potato curry and a potato and pumpkin curry. Well, parts of the veggie curries and ALL of the pistachio chicken as it was so delicious.  So more than just this dainty looking platefull.

I had resisted the popadoms as they are made with flour but I did have lots of the onion, minty yogurt and lime pickle as a starter.  Followed by one chocolate and lots of those minty coloured little things.  So not a great evening of eating but I didn’t have any flour, the number one rule!In Jumeira Happy birthday, you still young one.J, S and M It was a great evening.Suzanne's dinner in Jumeira

Today I worked from home.

This pineapple looked quite healthy until I tipped it over to cut it up.  It had been sitting on a saucer on the counter top since the weekend.  I forget how much sun that part of the kitchen gets.  I think it is rather striking.
mouldy pineapple 2 If you forget it is a bit of rotten fruit, I think the patterns and colours are rather spectacular.  Needless to, following a short but sweet modelling career, that piece of pineapple made its way in to the compost.mouldy pineapple 1 This one looks better!Healthy pineapple Ingredients for Jason Vale’s ‘Natural Energizer’ ;chard (should be spinach but I need to use some of this stuff up), courgette, fennel, sugar snap peas, cucumber, lime and pineapple.Natural Energizer ingredients Drinkable but not particularly enjoyable.  Just think of the goodness and get it down.

Jason Vale's Natural EnergizerLunch was much more enjoyable.  A huge stir fry with chicken.  I stir fried onion with red cabbage and garlic in rapeseed oil.  Then I fried green beans, broccoli, courgette and sugar snaps with some za’tar spices sprinkled on top.  I placed the veggies in a huge bowl while I stir fried the chicken in sesame oil with some soy sauce.
chicken and veg stir fry 3 I did pick at some while the chicken cooked as they were so yummy.chicken and veg stir fry 2 A very tasty lunch.chicken and veg stir fry

I am out at a musical soiree this evening to listen to the little fella singing in the Chamber Choir so I suspect supper will be juice again – white I think, rather than red 🙂

5 lbs In 5 Days – Day 5

I found yesterday’s juice fast quite easy so decided to do it again today rather than my original plan of juicing for 2 meals a day and eating for one.

According to Jason Vale’s 5 lbs in 5 days detox plan, today was day 5.  I woke up early and made the 4 juices in one go.  I took three to work and left one at home in the fridge for ‘supper’.

These are the ingredients for 2 servings of Sweet Beet Smoothie. sweet beet smoothie raw food I chop everything up ready to feed in to my juicer before I start.  I should have taken a photo of the finished result as it was a lovely dark purple colour.  It tasted pleasant and was very easy to drink.  I love blackberries but am not a huge fan of raw beetroot but they kind of equalled each other out and it was drinkable but I didn’t love it.Sweet Beet Smoothie in bowl This little lot however made the most fantastic juice.  These are the ingredients for Pear ‘n’ Parsnip; mint, pears, parsnip, apple and lime.  It was fantastic.pear n parsnip raw food Who would ever have thought that you could juice a parsnip?pear and parsnip ingredients I sipped my lime water while I chopped and juiced.lime water I took the fresh mint to work to have in boiling water and I also took some tea bags.  Tea is not part of this programme but I did have two cups today with the mint and no milk.  It was very refreshing actually and I didn’t miss the milk at all.mint and tea There’s me ready for the day; 2 portions of pear ‘n’ parsnip, one portion of sweet beet smoothie and some fresh mint.  The only thing I didn’t have from the Jason Vale programme was the ginger shot.Daily juice I was very hungry in the evening so as well as my sweet beet smoothie I had one of my SOS allowables; a ripe avocado with lime juice and black pepper.  A quick and simple supper which I really enjoyed.Avocado and smoothie

I will juice tomorrow morning and then have a large salad for lunch – that’s the plan anyway.

In The Cage

What a party we went to last night!   We were blessed with fine weather and we sat outside until the early hours with no need for even a wrap or shawl.

sitting outside I hopefully burnt a couple of calories by dancing.  I managed to resist the nibbles, was too busy chatting to lots of people I haven’t seen for ages so I missed dinner but unfortunately (for my diet) I didn’t miss pudding.  Confronted with carrot cake and chocolate roulade I do confess the no flour rule was but a dim memory.  The fizz and wine was not very helpful to ones diet either but it was an excellent party and I thoroughly enjoyed it all.Dancing inside Thank you to our lovely hosts, Marion and Colin and happy birthday, again, to Marion and Jane.  One legged “happy birthday” is an excellent innovation.one legged happy birthday

So today I woke up later then usual but felt undeservedly perky.  I had been considering spending the day on a juice fast and I actually did it.  Yes, all I have had all day is juice.  I did day 4, to the letter, of Jason Vale’s 5 lbs in 5 days.

I began with hot water in lemon, followed by hot water with mint and then a ginger shot.  For the morning and evening juice I had this lot which is called ‘Nature’s Super Blend’.   It was certainly a lot of healthy fruits and veggies; spinach, apples, broccoli, limes, courgette, pepper, celery, carrots, cucumber and avocado.Nature's Super blend ingredients It didn’t look very appealing and it tasted just about OK.  I glugged it down and thought about the good it was doing me rather than worry about the taste.Nature's Super Blend The lunch time and afternoon juice was so much better!  This little lot make ‘Minty Sunshine’.  It was meant to be made with oranges but I used a combination of oranges and clementines.Minty Sunshine ingredients Absolutely delicious.  I could drink this one every day.Minty Sunshine

That was it, I resisted everything else, even the curry the others had for tea.  Plus I managed to cook breakfast and lunch for Harvey so I was a little bit saintly I think.

I was woken up before 7am by 2 of my favourite garden workers.  While I slumbered on (yes, I went back to bed), this is what they did.

They cleared a very overgrown area behind the vegetable garden.fruit cage 3 They laid out the frame.fruit cage on grassBy the time I was back in the land of the living the frame was up and I was treated to a little pole dance!George pole dancingShortly after that he net was in place and the raspberries and blueberries were planted.  Yes, I have a fruit cage now and I am very happy with it.Fruit cage 2

The edging and base are not completed but at least the fruit plants are in the ground and protected from the birds.

Insode the fruit cage I think the fruit cage is a pleasing addition to the vegetable garden.Fruit Cage 1 The most pleasing addition of the day though was Lara coming home 🙂

Snooze Day Saturday

Thanks to a large yellow dog who had an upset stomach I was woken many times in the night to let said dog out in to the garden.  Consequently when I got up at my customarily early time I was exhausted.  I tried to do some gardening and the usual Saturday morning tasks which I usually enjoy but it was all too much effort today.  The sun was shining so I decided to enjoy it and relax.

I had lemon in hot water first thing and then took my mint in hot water outside with my kindle and enjoyed sitting in the early morning sunshine with a new book.

mint tea in garden I am beginning to enjoy the ginger shots more although I do confess I don’t get quite so excited about them as Jason Vale does!Ginger shot on app I did however get very excited by the morning juice/smoothie – Berry Banana Crunch.  It was fabulous.

If you are following the 5 lbs in 5 days plan you have one type of juice in the morning and evening and another type of juice for lunch and in the afternoon.  I have been having the morning/evening juice but eating a healthy meal at lunch time as I have a long way to go and think that is more sustainable.  However, I am really enjoying the juices so I might go for a 5 day juice fast and then back to how I am eating now which is quite easy to live with.

I really like the app for 5lbs in 5 days too.  I have never seen the book so can not comment on that but what I like about the app is it is simple to use, not much on it but it does have everything you need  and it has several little videos from Jason to teach you how to juice and enthuse you about his programme.  I initially found that over enthusiastic style slightly grating but have got over that now and find the videos interesting.

I will share this recipe as it is fantastic.  I made it exactly as instructed except I do not like crunchy smoothies so I ground the seeds in a coffee grinder first.

Berry Banana Crunch – thank you to Jason Vale for this lovely recipe.  I am giving the quantities for the morning and evening smoothie as I always make the double batch and then put half in the fridge in a light proof container for later.

Juice 4 apples

4 Gala apples Add 4 handfuls of mixed berries (fresh or frozen) to a blender.  I used half blackberries and quarter each of raspberries and blueberries.3 berries 4 tbsp seeds (optional).  I used 1 tbsp each of linseeds, sesame, hemp and chia seeds.4 jars of seeds 4 tbsp natural yogurt and 1 banana.yogurt and banana Add ice and blitz until smooth or leave crunchy.  However you like it.  It was fantastic.banana berry crunch For lunch I had a salmon, potato and salad (mixed leaves, tomato and half an avocado) with mayonnaise.  Followed by a very long and much needed snooze on the sofa.salmon and potato salad 31-5-14

I have just enjoyed the second half of the Berry Banana Crunch.  Sadly I think my good intentions and healthy eating so far are about to be unravelled.  I am about to totter over the road to Marion’s birthday party.  It will almost certainly be a diet and alcoholic disaster as not only are our hosts very generous and hospitable, it is only over the road so all I have to do at the end of the evening will be to totter back over the road.  It is also likely to be late.  My over the road neighbours are not early to bed people, ever, and today I had a long sleep so I am buzzing.  Let’s party!

Not Quite Centre Court

I managed to eat well and exercise today plus eat out and resist amazing cakes and spend a couple of hours in the pub with just one glass of wine.  All that temptation was resisted which is very pleasing but best of all I have had a lovely day.

I began with hot water and lemon followed by fresh mint in hot water.lemon in water No time for the ginger shot today as Harvey and I had to be out quite early but I did manage to make my juice.  All these fruits and veggies made the breakfast and supper juices which I was meant to blend with the avocado.  I didn’t have time to blend with the avocado for breakfast or supper but the juices were very tasty anyway and I am sure I can make good use of the avocado tomorrow.juice ingredients 30-5-14 I just had a small glass of green juice in the morning.small glass of green juice

Harvey wanted to eat out for lunch so I thought we could treat ourselves and we headed in to Cranbrook to Cocolicious – have a look at their Facebook site here; https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cocolicious/371061445937

This is the counter inside Cocolicious which is full of completely amazing cakes to tempt you.  I managed to resist all the cakes and didn’t even try Harvey’s delicious chocolate cake.Inside Cocolicious I enjoyed a decent coffee.Cocolicious coffee I enjoyed being with one of my favourite dining companions.H in Cocolicious And I really enjoyed these 2 salads; Chinese 5 spice chicken with asparagus, red cabbage, fennel and soya dressing and the grilled aubergine with chick peas and swiss chard with paprika and cumin dressing.chick pea and chicken saladsHarvey had a taste of the chicken salad and enjoyed it so much he had a portion and then asked the owner when the chicken salad would next be on the menu.  Apparently I have “so got to make that at home” one day very soon!  I will give it a go little fella.

By late afternoon I was peckish so I snacked on an apple and some Cheddar plus a small glass of the green juice.apple and Cheddar

I then set off to play in a tennis match; it was the first round of the local club’s annual tournament.  It was a perfect evening for tennis as it was mild, still (ie no wind) and bright.  My tennis partner Annette and I

Z and Annette were up against these two very formidable opponents.  Anyone local who knows Jane and Ginny may be impressed to know we did get a few sets, games, points off them!  It was an absolute pleasure to play against themJane and Ginny and even more of a pleasure to share some wine with them in our local pub afterwards.  The Milk House has become quite the place to go on a Friday evening and I saw lots of the local lovelies in there.P1010740

Back at home I enjoyed some celery and Camembert as I felt rather hungry, it was quick and easy and had no flour in it so I stuck to my rules.

Le Rustique and celery I enjoyed today with my little man and I enjoyed this evening, both playing tennis and catching up in the pub afterwards.  I wish all days were that lovely.

How Her Halo Glows

I have done really well today and I don’t mind admitting I feel a tiny bit pleased with myself.  Inspired by my sister Abi (who didn’t need to lose that much anyway) who has lost nearly a stone and a half since Easter, I decided to follow her plan.  She swapped breakfast for a Jason Vale juice and then ate sensibly all day making sure she had no flour products; bread, cakes, biscuits, pastries etc.  I have the Jason Vale 5lbs in 5 days app so I followed his instructions for the morning, had what I wanted for lunch and then followed his plan again for supper.

The day began with half a lemon squeezed in to a mug of boiling water.lemon juice in water

No, I didn’t juice the sweet peas.  They went in a little vase and the fresh mint was steeped in hot water.

mint and sweet peas

I really like fresh mint in water, it is very refreshing and in my new glass mug I think it looks very appealing too.

mint tea

The next thing on the agenda is a ginger shot, made with the juice of half an apple and about 2cm of ginger.  It is very strong but I quite liked it.

ginger shotThese are the ingredients for the ‘Turbo With a Kick!’.  I made twice this quantity and placed half in a flask in the fridge for supper.

juice ingredients 29-5-14

You juice everything except the avocado.  Then blend the avocado, freshly squeezed juice and some ice in to a very refreshing runny smoothie.  I really liked it and the other half I had for supper was still fresh tasting and enjoyable.

green juice 29-5-14

I did have a coffee mid morning and a cup of tea in the afternoon but that is a considerable reduction on my usual caffeine consumption and I have no intention of giving those up.

coffee 29-5-14For lunch Harvey and I had a little something from the garden.  Some just picked radishes.

my radishes

Added to a huge salad and served with salmon and new potatoes.  I did have an olive oil based salad dressing and some butter on my new potatoes.

salmon, potato and salad

Apart from water I had nothing else until supper time when I had another ‘Turbo With a Kick!’.  I am eating some grapes while I write this post but that will be it for the day.  Well, apart from a mug of camomile tea I will have in a minute.

IMG_5256

I did some exercise today as I took the dogs on a walk in the woods over the road.  It was really pretty today in the sunshine and I wished it had been that pretty yesterday when I went with Sally who visited us for the day.  Next time.

I also enjoyed spending some time painting.  I am teaching myself how to watercolour and am working my way through a complete beginners book.

watercolours I used to think watercolours were washed out, pale and not interesting but when my Uncle showed me some of his collection of brightly coloured paintings, made with watercolour paints I was inspired to have a go.   Thanks to Sarah and Marion I have the kit so I am ready to go.  I have been dabbling since my birthday in September but not regularly enough.  Now I have found a book I am enjoying working through there is no stopping me.  Well, time permitting!

It is quite hard to tell what the colours in the palette will look like on the paper so today I arranged them all in their little trays and painted myself a colour chart.  So many of the paints are dark in their concentrated form but really sing with bright and glorious colour when diluted with water and painted on to white paper.watercolours colour chart

I am on a chapter about painting flowers so I took some photos in the garden so I have some subjects to copy.  Fushias make me think of little ballerinas.Fushia 2 Our apple tree is smothered in this pretty little climbing rose.rose in apple tree I have hundreds of these cheery Ox-Eye Daisies.Ox-Eye Daisy 2 Ox-Eye Daisy I have no intention of trying to paint the dog but it was a cute picture.Dylan in evening sunshine

So tonight I can go to bed happy that I ate well, exercised well and relaxed extremely well.

A Day In Derbyshire

Harvey and I bade farewell to our lovely friends in Warwickshire and headed off to visit lovely friends in Derbyshire.

We had an excellent lunch in this lovely pub, The George in Alstonefield which is in one of England’s areas of outstanding natural beauty, The Peak District. The George This is a small pub and dining room so visitors are advised to book.  We ate in the charming dining room which was packed when we arrived but empty when we left (we had a very late lunch) so I could take some photos.Inside The George These peonies were stunning.red peonies Harvey had beer battered cod, chips and mushy peas.H with fish and chips I had a Gloucester Old Spot pork chop which was served with sauteed cabbage, an apple ring and creamy mashed potato.  It was delicious and complimented by the very large and very decent glass of Merlot I had with it.Pork chop and veggies I managed to squeeze in a dessert too which was an English Cream Tea Panna Cotta with a brown sugar and raspberry sponge and green tea ice cream.  Followed by a coffee.coffee and dessert The George Everything about the meal was excellent and I am looking forward to going back in June when we celebrate someone special’s birthday! Our table at the George Thank you Gini for organising such a lovely lunch and for driving and to you all for such a fun lunch and day out.H and the Smoths Derbyshire is such a pretty county and the typical building material here is this grey stone which is utterly charming.  Alstonefield house close up We went on a bit of a recce to find our perfect place to stay in June.  This garden ….Alstonefield Manor Garden which belongs to this Manor House will do very nicely thank you.Alstonefield Manor The weather was very overcast and drizzling but despite that, everywhere still looked delightful.  This is the graveyard of the little church in Alstonefield, the village we had lunch in.Alstonefield churchyard Leaving churchOur plans had included a walk in the Peak District but it was raining so we had a short drive instead so I could be reminded of how beautiful it is up here.Derbyshire stone wall This is near Dovedale, a particularly scenic spot we have walked in before and which I would love to visit again.Derbyshire stream Yes, all the vistas are quite delightful and I can’t wait to come back.Derbyshire vilage Today was not much fun as we had a long and wet drive home which is exhausting on the motorway.  I had been so well fed at Gini’s I wasn’t hungry for breakfast and just had a latte and a Bounce peanut energy ball on the 5 hour drive home.

Back at home I wanted some good nutrients so I made a smoothie with almond milk, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, a frozen banana, chia seeds and natural yogurt.smoothie ingredients 27-5-14 Very tasty.Smoothie 27-5-14

I took the dogs on a walk despite the drizzle and felt better for it.  I have been slack lately but am determined to be better now.  So every day I must manage at least a 30 minute walk.

Eating was much better than it has been recently.  Late afternoon I enjoyed a snack of some of the provisions Gini gave me to bring home.  I had 4 olive crackers with smoked salmon pate which we bought yesterday in Croots Farm Shop in Duffield on our way t the Peak District.

salmon pate and olive crackers Supper was a very quick and easy wholewheat noodles with broccoli, red onion, red pepper and prawns.noodles veg and prawns

I have had such a wonderful time visiting very dear friends in two gorgeous parts of England.  It is shame they live so far away but both Warwickshire and Derbyshire are beautiful and well worth a visit.

I am easing my way back in to healthy eating so I can crack on and lose weight and do more exercise so I feel better.  One more day of ‘holiday’ tomorrow and then back with a vengeance.

If You Go Down To The Woods Today

you would have been in for quite a lot of shrieking and giggling.  We are staying with friends in Warwickshire and today we headed for a walk in Hopwas woods near Tamworth.  We parked outside this charming School House which was built in 1717.

Relax Among The Books

I work very close to Charing Cross Road.  Many of you will know this is a road famous for its bookshops; very large shops, cut price, antiquarian and specialist.  All manner of book shops.  My work is all computerised meaning I spend most of the day sitting at my laptop and lately I have been incredibly busy with few chances to get out at lunchtime.  Yesterday however I really needed a break from my digital world and so I headed to the sanctuary of a very large bookshop.

Charing Cross Road  runs North and South and defines the boundary between the London Boroughs of Westminster

Charing Cross Road Westminster and Camden.Charing Cross Road Camden The book shop I tend to retreat to is Foyles which has been in business for over 100 years  and is still owned by the Foyles family.Foyles store front I did have some books to buy which I enjoyed looking for but I was really heading to the room above the Foyles sign.Foyles entrance The cafe.

Foyles cafe

To be honest it is quite a dingy cafe.  A bit on the dark and unloved side.
dull and dingy Foyles cafe The food isn’t amazing either.  It is perfectly adequate but not somewhere to travel to for the express purpose of eating in.

I like it because it is peaceful.  Having relaxed by wandering among book shelves bulging with books about most topics you could think of, I arrived in the cafe, selected my lunch and sat in relative peace and quiet.  Most people seem to come here alone and sit reading their books or using laptops, phones, iPads etc.  So it is quite peaceful, certainly compared to other local coffee shops and cafes brimming with people in groups, chatting. When I seek sanctuary from my large open plan digital work space, I want to sit companionably but silently.  So the cafe of a bookshop is perfect.Foyles lunch 22-5-14 I enjoyed a salad with falafel in a wrap while I flicked through some books I had bought Harvey and caught up on email.salad and wrap in Foyles cafe I became alarmed when paying for my books as I saw signs that Foyles is moving in the next few weeks. Fairy Dust

My little corner of Southern England enjoyed bright blue skies and hot sunshine all day today.  It was wonderful and as I had a day at home, mainly gardening, I was able to enjoy it all.

Scrambled eggs, spinach and cherry tomatoes for breakfast and off I went in to the garden for just about the entire day.spinach, egg and tomsThe first thing I do on such a day as today is to water, slowly, letting the plants have plenty of water while giving me time to have a good look at the previous day’s growth or slug attack.  I started working in the sunny beds but it was so warm, even at 9 am, that I swapped to work in the shade while it was there.  The entire vegetable patch is bathed in sunshine by about 10 am and stays that way all day.
garden in the morningThe spinach and radishes are ready for picking which is always exciting.  Shame I forgot to actually pick them at lunch time though !

spinach is readyThe broad beans are coming along well and the peas are growing incredibly quickly.

As well as the vegetables I needed to make a start on the planting out the 105 flower seedlings Sarah Raven sent me a couple of weeks ago so it was a very busy day in the garden.  chicken salad lunch 18-5-14 It is Harvey’s birthday on Tuesday and he was slightly anxious that this year, our nearly sugar free home may not produce a birthday cake.  Shop bought cakes are not the thing at all on a birthday so he made his own, almost entirely alone.  He made cup cakes and they turned out really well.Harvey with cupcake mixture Once they were cooled and butter iced, he set about decorating them with great gusto.   No pot of glitter or sprinkles went unused.

making cupcakesAs my had-just-been-cleaned-ready-for-the-week-ahead kitchen disappeared beneath a cloud of fairy dust (you may call it glitter) I felt proud of the little fella for having a go.  He has never made cup cakes before but now he has and they are really good.  We had to try them to make sure they were fit for purpose.  They were but are now packed away ready for the big day on Tuesday.

And I am finding fairy dust everywhere.
